DETROIT — Jaden Smith is helping the residents of Flint, Michigan, through a new initiative. The rapper, actor and co-founder of the eco-friendly company JUST Water has partnered with a local Flint church to deploy a mobile water treatment system. The system is called "The Water Box" and it filters out lead and additional contaminants in water, according to a press release. Flint's water crisis began in April 2014 after the city's water source was switched from the Detroit River to the Flint River, which resulted in city-wide lead contamination of public drinking water. Deputies in Laurel County, Kentucky, arrested two women Thursday after a newborn was found on the floor of their minivan following a traffic stop. According to their arrest citations, Charolette Simpson, 69, and Rebecca Fultz, 32, both had warrants for their arrest. A deputy pulled the minivan over for traffic violations. Simpson drove for a quarter of a mile before stopping.When deputies finally got Simpson to pull over, they say Rebecca Fultz began struggling against officers. Officers say that it was 10 minutes before anyone told them that there was an infant inside the car.The child was discovered in the floor on a blanket. The car had no working air condition, and temperatures were in the 90s. The newborn was covered in insects and was wearing a soiled diaper. The infant was taken to the hospital. Inside the van were clothes with human feces on them and bag of garbage. Fultz and Simpson are both charged with criminal abuse. Fultz also received charges of menacing and resisting arrest. 1016

CDC head Robert Redfield said on Thursday that he is concerned that the civil unrest could lead to coronavirus “seeding” events, which could prompt a new outbreak of the virus.Speaking before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Thursday, Redfield said he is fretful that Americans aren’t heeding the organization’s social distancing guidance. “We really want those individuals to highly consider being evaluated and get tested, and obviously, go from there, because I do think there is a potential, unfortunately, for this to be a seeding event,” Redfield said about the protests, especially those in major metropolitan areas with a significant spread of the virus. “And the way to minimize that is to have each individual to recognize it's to the advantage of them to protect their loved ones. ‘Hey, I was out, I need to go get tested,’ you know, in three, five, seven days, go get tested, make sure you're not infected.”While the daily number of new cases has decreased from its peak in April, a number of states are continuing to see an increase in cases. On Thursday, the state of Florida announced its largest jump in infections, with 1,400 new coronavirus cases.
