SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego announced Wednesday they've selected a developer for a new pod hotel concept near San Diego Bay.STAY OPEN was chosen to develop and operate the new low-cost, pod-style hotel concept that would be located on Pacific Highway between the Port's administration building and Palm Street.The concept envisions 33 rooms with eight to 12 pods per room. Each pod would include a single-occupancy bed, storage locker, power supply, ventilation control, privacy screen, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms would share one bathroom with shower facilities. And space on the hotel's rooftop would be reserved for a restaurant, bar, and outdoor seating open to the public.An exact price for an overnight stay in a pod was not released, but STAY OPEN partner JUCY Snooze offers the pod rentals in New Zealand starting at about per night.The goal behind to concept is to offer an inexpensive for travelers, similar to a hostel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of San Diego County jury trials are on-hold because of the pandemic. Local court officials have requested another extension from the Judicial Council of California for jury trials to be postponed through mid-September.On Monday, ABC10 News spoke to San Diego Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about the challenges of returning to jury trials. “We’re at 25-hundred jury trials that need to be tried,” she told us.Trials were halted on March 17th. Non-jury trials are currently in progress through a remote virtual process. “What we can't do right now is bring a jury into the courthouse. When you can't even go to a restaurant to eat, the idea of bringing hundreds of people in to sit in a room together is not recommended,” she told ABC10 News.Courtrooms are being retrofitted with plexiglass barriers to protect everyone from jurors to defendants to court staff. Judge Alksne said other safety measures like social distancing will also be implemented, when appropriate.“Once you do resume the process of summoning jurors, what if they just don't feel comfortable? They fear the risk?” we asked. “Jury service is a duty that we hold in high regard. We can't have criminal justice service work without jurors so I would hope that by the time we actually pull jurors in and ask them to come down that unless they have a health condition that would make it unsafe here, that they would be willing to serve,” she responded.The court is still working through other complex issues like the possible need for more alternate jurors. “In other jurisdictions where they have tried to start jury trials up and down the State of California, one juror getting COVID-19 or having symptoms will send everyone home and you'll have a mistrial,” she added.Judge Alksne also said there are currently about 300 violent felony defendants in custody who are waiting to be tried. 1903

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The vision of SDSU's future home field is coming into focus after brand new renderings were unveiled Saturday at Aztec Football Fan Fest.This comes after a November ballot measure to redevelop the SDCCU Stadium site with a professional soccer stadium. It was handily rejected by voters, who favored a competing plan that will include a new stadium for San Diego State University football."We have designed a stadium that works for Aztec football, but it's going to work for soccer, it's going to work for concerts, the concourse was developed in a way that it's going to be able to be used 365 days a year," Athletics Director John David Wicker said.READ RELATED: Sources: SDSU meets with Major League SoccerWhen students saw the new plan, they were ecstatic, "that's so awesome! It would be amazing to finally fill the stadium for once because it feels empty but we know there's a bunch of people here," SDSU student Taylor Adams said.The new stadium would seat up to 35,000, position the student section behind the goal posts and create dining designed for students."That are discounted for them. Our goal is they'll be able to use their Red ID, the money that's on their Aztec dining plan that they can use there," Wicker said."I'm all for it because students are really on a budget out here," SDSU student Lindsy Peterson said.
