"We plan for the unplannable."That's how "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah" host puts on a nightly comedy show in the Trump era."It's the 5:30 curse," Noah told CNN's Brian Stelter in a recent interview about his nightly Comedy Central show. "Around 5:30 every single day, that's when the news will break."One glaring example came last week when news broke that AT&T had made payments to Michael Cohen — President Donald Trump's longtime lawyer — in exchange for insight into Trump's thinking on various issues pertinent to AT&T. The news broke around 5 p.m. and AT&T confirmed it at 6:30 p.m. Journalists and comedians scrambled to catch up for their shows.Noah said, "We don't scramble anymore. Now we expect it."Noah took over the late-night comedy program from longtime host Jon Stewart in 2015, just as the presidential race began to heat up.Stelter asked Noah how his show fits into the current era."I think, as the world comes to change, our purpose in that world changes," Noah said. When "there's not much strife, I generally find the comedy will be benign," he added. "As things become scarier, as the world becomes less secure, as people question, you know, the security that they exist within, that's when comedy becomes more cutting, because, in many ways, it's the release valve to that fear or to that tension." 1354

"A storm's a comin', baby."That's what the actual Stormy Daniels said to Alec Baldwin's President Donald Trump on this week's edition of "Saturday Night Live." The actress appeared in the cold open alongside many other big names that surround Trump. One such name was Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, played by Ben Stiller."What's up, amigo? How are you holding up in prison?" Baldwin's Trump said to Stiller's Cohen over the phone."I'm not in prison," said Stiller's Cohen, who called Baldwin's Trump from a pay phone."Oh well, give it a couple of weeks," the faux president responded.Baldwin's Trump then said to call another one of his lawyers, Rudy Giuliani, played by Kate McKinnon, saying that he has "the sharpest mind since 'My Cousin Vinny.'"However, Cohen accidentally phoned Trump's former personal doctor, Harold Bornstein, played by Martin Short."This is Harold Bornstein. Would you like to know any of patient's medical history?" Short as Bornstein asked before Stiller's Cohen called Giuliani, who was appearing on Fox News during the call.Giuliani, who said he had other TV appearances lined up to give away secret information, was then looped by Cohen. But without his knowledge, FBI agents were also listening in on the phone call.Trump and Cohen then connected others like Aidy Bryant's Sarah Sanders, Beck Bennett's Mike Pence, Cecily Strong's Melania Trump, Leslie Jones' Omarosa Manigault and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who were played by Scarlett Johansson and Jimmy Fallon. Then Daniels got brought into the party line of calls as well."What do you need for all of this to go away?" Baldwin's Trump asked Daniels."A resignation," she responded to cheers from the audience.Daniels and Baldwin's Trump then opened the NBC variety show with its catch phrase, "Live from New York ... It's Saturday night!" 1834

President Donald Trump's travel ban is throwing up road blocks for a US citizen who needs a bone marrow transplant that could save his life.Maziar Hashemi, 60, was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of blood cancer, in September. His doctors say the only treatment that can cure his cancer is a bone marrow transplant. Maziar Hashemi's brother, Kamiar Hashemi, is a 100% bone marrow match to Maziar, but he lives in Iran.Iran is one of eight countries subject to restrictions on their citizens entering the United States as part of a Trump administration policy implemented in December. Under this policy, people from Iran -- both immigrants and visitors -- are prevented from entering the United States unless they are students, scholars or have an exchange visitor visa. Iranians can still apply for visas, but many have been denied since the ban took effect, although waivers can be granted.Maziar Hashemi came to the United States to study civil engineering in 1975 and he is a naturalized citizen. He works as a civil engineer, but has not been working since October because he has been in and out of the hospital. His brother and sister still live in Iran.Kamiar Hashemi applied for a visa to come to the United States in February so he could have the bone marrow transplant surgery at the hospital in Massachusetts where his brother is being treated. His visa was denied the same day he had a visa application interview at a US Embassy in Armenia. After he received the rejection, he submitted an application for a visa waiver.Almost two months later, the Hashemis still don't know if Kamiar Hashemi will be able to travel to the United States. Maziar Hashemi is undergoing his fourth round of chemotherapy this week, and his doctors have scheduled a bone marrow transplant surgery for April 27. Right now, Maziar's son Robert is planning to give his bone marrow for his father's surgery, but Robert is only a 50% match."They are not waiting for my brother anymore," Maziar Hashemi said. "They are proceeding with the 50% match procedure because I get sick often and my body cannot take it anymore. I need to have this transplant done."Hashemi has pursued other options. Be the Match, an organization that helps facilitate bone marrow transplants in the United States and around the world, says it offered to help the Hashemi family. The organization was planning to send Hashemi's brother from Iran to a hospital in India where he'd undergo the bone marrow extraction procedure. Then Be The Match would transport those stem cells back to the United States. But the organization's legal team said the stem cells would be considered an Iranian export, and under current US sanctions against Iran, that would be illegal. The Treasury Department, which oversees trade sanctions, declined to comment when CNN asked about the Hashemi case.Hashemi also has a sister, but she had cancer last year, so she is not eligible to give Maziar a transplant. In his waiver application to the embassy, Kamiar Hashemi included letters from doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and from Massachusetts Rep. Michael Capuano, a Democrat. Maziar Hashemi has hired attorney Mahsa Khanbabai to help with the process."He submitted materials right then and there," Khanbabai said of Kamiar's interview. "They denied the case but said we'll review your waiver application, and that's what's been pending all this time."One-hundred percent matches are rare. Only 30% of patients find matching donors within their families, according to research compiled by the Institute of Justice. Maziar Hashemi's doctor, Zachariah Defilipp, wrote, "A perfect match will provide the ability for a safe transplant as there is a higher likelihood that cells will not be recognized as foreign," in the letter he submitted with Kamiar's visa waiver application.Khanbabai said it's unclear if the waiver would be approved by the State Department in Washington or by officials in the US Embassy in Armenia. She is helping the Hashemis submit paperwork and liaise with the embassy, but she said suing the State Department is still an option they are considering."We could try to file suit with the State Department for not adjudicating the waiver, because it's still pending," she said. "It is something that we're keeping in mind."CNN contacted the State Department to ask about the case and was referred to the Treasury Department, which had no comment. 4462

"You might want to step back," said Darryl Clinton as yet another explosion boomed nearby. He seemed to know exactly what that sound meant. A fissure that violently cracked open the earth's surface was spewing more lava and, possibly, more lava bombs -- flying chunks of molten rock.Clinton spoke to CNN on Friday, while defending two homes in Pahoa roughly 100 yards from the unstable fissure that's been erupting for more than a week now.Even to get from one house to another takes a life-or-death game of frogger.Clinton pointed to the remains of one lava bomb purged from a nearby fissure that landed just inches from a friend's house. The yard was littered every few feet with with fallen lava, but Clinton wasn't worried about getting hit by the hunks of molten rock."It's almost like catching a football," Clinton said in describing how to avoid being hit. "But you don't want to catch this football."Armed with just a fire extinguisher and a garden hose, Clinton has been defending the homes that belong to friends. He's been spraying down the burning lava bombs that hit the houses to prevent them from catching fire. Heaps of flaming rock have already shattered windows and destroyed a septic tank -- setting it ablaze with a blue flame of burning methane gas.A day later, Clinton fell victim himself -- distracted by his cell phone for mere moments, when a bowling ball-sized lava bomb hit him in the leg while he was standing on the porch. His friend and ex-wife Lisa Roach was nearby and able to take him to the hospital. She had been helping him defend the homes -- the pair were keeping watch in shifts.Roach told CNN she believes the intense heat of the lava bomb actually cauterized the wound, preventing it from bleeding more than it did.The burning projectile also set Clinton's porch ablaze, but a neighbor managed to extinguish it. Clinton is currently in the hospital, recovering. Roach said he can already wiggle his toes, but won't be able to put weight on his injured foot for at least six weeks. He's had two surgeries already, and will likely have more, but is expected to recover. 2112
