SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of protests collided in front of State Sen. Toni Atkins' downtown San Diego office Friday morning, and joined forces to call for help.Members from the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment gathered to tell Atkins to support Assembly Bill 1436, which would extend the eviction moratorium until April 1, 2021. They say it's the only way to protect people who haven't been able to pay rent because of the coronavirus pandemic.Meanwhile, a car rally organized by UDW/AFSCME Local 3930 demanded a new tax on California billionaires to help pay for child care and shore up holes in the state's education budget.The groups were unaware of each other's planned protests until they both showed up at Atkins' office at the same time. But they say their combined voices should help get her attention."This tax would help those families who need quality childcare, affordable childcare, so we are supporting the children," said Miren Algorri, a child care provider who supports the tax. "This is not about the rich, this is about the children, the future, not only of this community, but of California, the nation.""We need protection," said Patricia Mendoza, a mother of two who faces eviction if the current moratorium runs out. "Where are we going to go? What's going to happen to me, what's going to happen to my future? I don't want to have to tell my kids we're going to be homeless. And I don't think any mother, or any parent would like to tell their kids we're going to be homeless."Atkins has already written a bill that would allow landlords and tenants to work out a payment plan for back rent, to be paid between 2024 and 2034. The protesters Friday say it doesn't go far enough, because it doesn't eliminate the threat of eviction.After the joint protest, people wrote chalk messages to the senator so she would see them every time she walked in and out of her office.A spokesperson sent ABC 10News the following statement: “Senator Atkins supports the committee process and generally does not take positions on bills until they are through that process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego judge said Thursday that his recent ruling protecting two strip clubs from California's stay-at-home order extends to all county restaurants.San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel R. Wohlfeil said Wednesday that strip clubs and "San Diego County businesses with restaurant service” cannot get a cease-and-desist order. Thursday, he reiterated his ruling, saying that it applies to all restaurants in the county, not just the strip clubs in question. "The court’s intention is that all businesses which provide restaurant service — meaning all restaurants in the County of San Diego — are encompassed in the scope of the court’s order. The health of our local economy hinges on the health of San Diegans."Wednesday's ruling prompted many local restaurants to open their doors again after they were shuttered by the state's stay-at-home orders requiring restaurants to offer takeout and delivery only. Though it wasn't immediately clear if that meant restaurants could reopen for full service or limited service, such as outdoor dining only.County officials said Wednesday that until more clarity surrounding the ruling was provided, they have suspended enforcement against restaurants and live entertainment establishments. California's regional stay-at-home order went into effect after the Southern California region, which includes San Diego County, saw its ICU capacity dipped under 15%. Thursday, the region's capacity hit 0% as the state added more than 52,200 new coronavirus cases.Wednesday’s ruling was in response to a case brought against the county and state by Midway Ventures and F-12, the owners of Pacers Showgirls and Cheetahs Gentleman's Club, in October, after COVID-19 restrictions that forced them to close. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant destroyed by a fatal fire last October reopened just in time for the holiday crowds. Kojack's Greek American fusion restaurant has been a Mission Beach staple for more than three decades. But last October, a fire started near the roof of the building and destroyed the ice cream shop and Kojack's on the bottom floor, as well as the apartment rooms on the second floor. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said 36-year-old apartment tenant, Aaron Porter died in the fire. Since the tragedy, the building and restaurant owner, Mike Soltan says he has worked tirelessly to get back onto his feet to reopen on his favorite holiday. "I never miss the Fourth of July on this beach for 33 years. So we tried so hard to make it, and finally, we did it." Soltan said. Longtime customer, Steve Grebing said he could not miss the grand reopening. "He [Soltan] kept saying in two weeks, two weeks. He was getting there, but now he is back here, so it's great," Grebing said. While the building itself is rebuilt, the renovations for the second floor are on hold. So no apartment tenants are able to live upstairs. Soltan also owns the ice cream shop next to Kojack's. Both shops reopened on July 4. 1226

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who led police on pursuit was arrested early Monday morning after spending 45 minutes on the roof of a Webster home.San Diego police officers attempted to stop a dark colored Kia shortly before 12:30 a.m. on 49th and Federal Blvd. after the driver was seen driving recklessly.The driver crashed into an embankment and pole on Marilou Road, and that's when police said the suspect jumped out and took off running.Police chased the man for several blocks, even jumping fences and running through backyards. The suspect then climb on top of a home, leaping across rooftops trying to get away, but was surrounded.The suspect sat on the rooftop on Brookline street and told officers he would not come down until they put their guns down.The suspect eventually surrendered 45 minutes later. Firefighters were called in to put a ladder up and help get him down.He's being evaluated for DUI and faces felony evading charges. 950

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of activists are upset after the San Diego Police Department rescheduled a Black History Month celebration for the department's current and former black police officers.The department's celebration was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 24th, but was canceled just days before. The group says a committee of officers was appointed to plan the event in January. They think the cancellation was politically motivated. Monica Montgomery spoke during a brief press conference on Monday at the Civic Center Plaza. She thinks the decision to reschedule the event was made after the keynote speaker was announced. The speaker was supposed to be Geneviéve Jones-Wright, the candidate for San Diego district attorney. She's running against interim D.A., Summer Stephan. The police department told 10News the event was rescheduled due to planning conflicts. Lt. Scott Wahl said they plan on notifying officers when a new date is set. The D.A. sent 10News the following statement: "District Attorney Summer was not involved in the planning or the rescheduling of this event." 1143
