BONSALL, Calif. (KGTV) — Friday marks one year since the devastating Lilac Fire tore through northern San Diego County. More than 100 families lost their homes in the fire."Everything seems different,” said Bonsall resident Marci Grihalva. “I don't know what it is, but it's almost surreal.”Staring out at the landscape, Grihalva surveys her neighborhood."I think everyone was just really surprised how fast this fire went. It was just here,” she said.Grihalva lives in the Rancho Monserate community. It’s just west of the Interstate 15 in the Bonsall area. Last year, the Lilac Fire turned her home and most of her neighborhood to ash."If I think about it, what I lost, it's almost too much,” Grihalva told 10News. “I just can't handle it. It's too hard; it's too hard.”The homes in Rancho Monserate were some of the first to go. Grihalva said she and her husband watched the destruction on television. In the end, 114 homes were destroyed, 55 more damaged, and 45 horses died.Following the fire, the County of San Diego issued a fire response report. It breaks down the sequence of events and focuses on response efforts. The report also highlights successes and offers recommendations on how to be better prepared."The county is constantly improving,” said Holly Crawford, director of the county's Office of Emergency Services. “What we do here in my office is we don't just learn lessons from our own disasters, we look at disasters that happened elsewhere.”Team 10 asked Crawford about each of the recommendations listed in the report and whether or not the county is moving forward with them. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – This holiday shopping season is expected to be like no other, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, so retailers will need to adjust accordingly.Wednesday, Walmart announced its plans for how it intends to meet the changing needs of customers in the coming months.Specifically, the retail giant plans to address these areas: earlier holiday shopping deals, increased online shopping, evolving wish lists, and the need for safe shopping experiences.Expanded Black Friday dealsWalmart is promising an “all-new Black Friday experience,” with deals being offered earlier. BRANSON, Mo. — Branson, Missouri is a tourist destination for tens of thousands of families every summer. The winter months bring colder temperatures and empty amusement parks, meaning high unemployment across the community. This year, COVID-19 has made the widespread seasonal poverty even worse.Kevin Huddleston runs the Christian Action Ministries Food Bank in Branson and helps feed thousands of families per year. He said this year, they've handed out twice the amount of food as they did last year because so many families have been financially struggling through the pandemic.Huddleston said the need for services has fluctuated throughout the year, skyrocketing at times and leveling out when the stimulus checks and expanded unemployment benefits kicked in. With winter on the horizon, he is worried for what is to come."I really am concerned that we are entering our season of highest demand, and typically, normally people enter this period of time with some stored back, they have some money set aside, some food set aside, to get them through the dark days of winter when our tourism season is dormant here. We don’t have that fallback this year, people are not prepared," said Huddleston.He is also worried that the community, without a homeless shelter or affordable housing units, will see more community members on the streets than ever before."I think we’re likely going to see a housing problem this winter, seeing more people being homeless situationally, so we as a community are scrambling trying to do something."The city is opening up a warming center for people to have somewhere to go to escape the frigid temperatures, but it is not an overnight place yet. Huddleston is hoping a homeless shelter will be able to open up soon.Despite the adversity families are facing across this tourist town, Huddleston said he does have hope."Our financial contributions have been very good this year, much better than we’ve expected in this kind of economic situation," he said, adding that their shelves are often overstocked. Thankfully, food supply has not been an issue. The food bank has been able to help thousands without ever running out.Still, he says handing out food does not fix the problem. He and other community leaders said poverty in Branson needs to be addressed at the root. He is part of a group helping to build resources in the community so families can work themselves out of a constant situation of struggle. However, he is worried these solutions will not come quick enough."We are planning for a very dire situation this winter," he said. "We are going to practice as if that’s going to happen, and if it doesn’t, we’ll be blessed." 2680

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart announced Wednesday that it has revamped its Black Friday plans to help provide a safer and more convenient shopping experience amid the coronavirus pandemic.The retail giant says it will spread out its Black Friday savings from one single day to three different events throughout November to bring customers “Black Friday Deals for Days.”The company says each savings event will begin online at Walmart.com and continue in Walmart stores three days later.Event 1Deals for the first event begin online on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. ET, with new deals in stores starting on Nov. 7 at 5 a.m. local time. (AP) — An egg has been laid in a nest shared by two bald eagles in Southern California and nature lovers will anxiously watch for the hatching via an online live feed .U.S. Forest Service biologist Robin Eliason said Wednesday that the parents will share incubation duties for the next month or so. Eliason expects the hatchling will arrive in early April.The video feed shows an eagle nestling on the egg Thursday as strong, cold winds blow through the San Bernardino National Forest. A count completed late last year found 11 bald eagles living in the forest east of Los Angeles.The Institute for Wildlife Studies web page has thousands of comments from people watching the feed.
