SAN DIEGO — The County Office of Education is taking its annual job fair entirely online, with already more than 800 registered job seekers. The job fair, which is regularly held at Liberty Station, will instead feature virtual lobbies and virtual tables. Dr. Sheiveh Jones, who organized the fair for the office of education, said more than 25 school districts and charter schools are participating. She said there may not be as many openings as in prior years because of temporary budget uncertainty, but that could change by the end of the summer. "When a position does open, the district may invite you to apply or they may just recognize your name when they look at the applications," she said. Jones said the districts are hiring for both academic and non-academic positions. She added there is always demand for bilingual, special education, STEM and substitute teachers. She said her best advice is to check out the posted jobs online ahead of time at Edjoin, so jobseekers can be better prepared to meet hiring managers, or even apply before the fair. SAN DIEGO (AP) — An animal rights group is asking the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate SeaWorld over allegations that it misled investors about injuries during its dolphin shows.People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Thursday it had sent a letter to the SEC saying the marine theme park had lied when it said no animals are injured during the shows.The SEC declined comment.The group known as PETA is a shareholder in the company and alleges that SeaWorld trainers have caused injuries when they stand on the dolphins.It says veterinarians have found wounds and scars on dolphins at SeaWorld parks in California, Texas and Florida.SeaWorld said in response that it treats its animals well and has rescued thousands. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A construction project at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Office Building in downtown San Diego will result in a 21-month closure of a portion of Front Street, beginning Saturday.According to the U.S. General Services Administration, a two-block stretch of Front Street, between Broadway and West F Street, will be affected by the construction project, which is expected to last until June 2021. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be detoured around the project area.The project will reinforce and enhance the Front Street underpass beneath the Schwartz Federal Building. The project is designed to increase safety for the building's occupants as well as pedestrians and motorists, according to the GSA.The Federal Building's existing framing at the underpass will be reinforced with new steel beams, concrete paneling and column support structures, federal officials said.Signs will be in place on Interstate 5 to alert motorists to the closure as they enter downtown. The easternmost lane of Front Street between Broadway and E Street will provide access to the underground parking garage at 101 West Broadway and for turning city buses.Construction work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. except on weekends and holidays.The roadwork will be completed first, followed by pedestrian walkways with full-height walls to separate the road from walkways, according to the GSA."One of our strategic goals is better management of federal real estate and this GSA construction project allows for that while also being a catalyst for downtown revitalization," said GSA Regional Administrator Tom Scott. SAN DIEGO — Sisters Pizza on the edge of Hillcrest just celebrated its one-year anniversary. The party wasn’t exactly what owner Emily Green Lake had in mind. "We're not constantly doing refills, bringing them condiments the way that we used to,” she said. “Salt and pepper shakers are a thing of the past. I don't know that we'll ever see those again.” About two weeks ago, county restaurants got the green light to once again host guests. While Lake doesn't have to, she is keeping the dining room closed to the public for safety reasons. Instead, she opened eight of the 22 tables on her front patio, spaced out for social distancing. “It's nice to see people back there, but it's sad to think of the opportunities that my business is missing out on,” Lake said. Still, not every restaurant is hosting guests . Some are opting to stay take-out only for the time being. The ones that have opened up, however, are finding limited takers. New reservation data from Open Table shows seated dining in San Diego is down about 80% from this time a year ago. One reason: only about 45 percent of the restaurants in Open Table’s network are even taking reservations. “Just because we've had to open the economy doesn't mean that there is no coronavirus anymore, and I think that's where people are coming from when they don't want to be among the masses,” Lake said. Lake said while delivery is up, overall sales are down 40%. And to make it harder, she's spending 80 cents per order on disposable plates and utensils. Lake said she has been able to keep all of her 14 workers, but that their hours have been cut. Normally, around this time year, Lake would have hired twice as many people.
