SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego woman is calling for the community’s support and the power of social media to find a match for her kidneys. According to “Donate Life,” nearly 20,000 people need a kidney transplant in California alone, and the number of registrants grows every day.38-year-old Ann Brown has been married to husband Jason for 20 years. The couple has two children: Van (18), who was recently accepted into the US Navy, and little Sammantha (9). The family has always enjoyed taking vacations, and going to the beach and mountains. But that all stopped seven years ago.“He asked how long I had polycystic kidneys and I’m like, ‘Excuse me?’” said Brown, recalling a routine visit to the doctor.That day, the Brown family found out that Ann had stage three kidney failure. Both of her kidneys were riddled with inoperable cysts, becoming much larger than normal. Nearly a year ago, Ann was placed on the kidney donor registry, but so far, has been without a match. “My husband was going to donate to me, but he wasn’t a match,” Brown said. “It makes me feel helpless I can’t do anything,” said her husband, Jason.With a rare B+ blood type, only those with B or O types can even attempt to donate to Ann. Her high antibody count also makes her case extremely hard to match. “Doctors said only 10% of the population could even donate,” Brown said. The only thing keeping her heart beating is the massive dialysis machine in the master bedroom. “Nine to ten hours a day, I’m trapped,” Brown laughed. “But it keeps me alive. It keeps me healthy enough until the next morning, and gives me another day.”Doctors told her that waiting for a cadaver kidney match can take up to ten years. With no live donor in sight, the odds are not good. Jason set up a Facebook and website and even had son Van share the links to his favorite professional athletes and social media influencers. But they still got no responses. The Brown family exhausted all resources. At a recent photo op, 9-year-old Sammantha even asked help from Santa Claus.“I asked him for a kidney donor for my mom,” Sammantha said. Brown said she was caught off guard. Her daughter’s wish moved her to tears.“At nine years old, she should be asking for toys or candy,“ said Brown. “But she asked for the most selfless gift, something for someone else.”Sammantha also wrote a card to her mother.“I drew a kidney right here. It says 'So here’s mine. But I wish it was real,'” Sammantha said. “And in the back, it says Merry Christmas.”The family is hoping for a Christmas miracle to give Ann a new lease on life. “I’m just hoping someone has a good heart, and give us the most beautiful gift that anybody can have. Gift of life,” said Ann’s mother Elizabeth Graves. “It’s a huge thing that I am asking, and I understand that,” Brown said. “And it would be really appreciated though. My kids would appreciate. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Airbnb says it has cracked down on 17 listings in San Diego County that have received complaints or have violated policies surrounding parties.The rental booking company says the listings have either been suspended or removed from its platform following Airbnb's ban on parities and events at listings until further notice.The listings disciplined were located in the San Diego, Escondido, La Mesa, Clairemont Mesa, Linda Vista, Mission Bay Park, North Park, Pacific Beach, Peninsula, Southeastern San Diego, and Uptown.RELATED: San Diego shuts down Bankers Hill Airbnb ‘party house’ over COVID-19 concerns, other violations"In this current environment, it’s more important than ever before to prevent large parties and gatherings, and we support the efforts of local officials to put a stop to this irresponsible behavior," said John Choi, Airbnb’s Director of Public Policy in San Diego. Earlier this month, a guest held an unauthorized party at a home in Sacramento County, ending with three people being shot and injured at the party. The house-sharing company has also made it more challenging for some guests under the age of 25 from booking rentals in their region unless they have a number of positive reviews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A team of middle school students from Oak Valley Middle School in 4S Ranch has won a national competition in cybersecurity.Coached by Paul Johnson, a senior systems engineer at Northrop Grumman, the students learn how to catch and protect against hackers. During competitions, hackers attempt to breach networks, while the students try to identify and eject them. Called "CyberPatriot", the national championship was held in Baltimore, Maryland.The goal of the program is to get kids interested in potential careers in cybersecurity.The Poway Unified School District has CyberPatriot teams at Design 39 School and Del Norte High School, in addition to Oak Valley Middle School. 715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A special ceremony was held at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton on Friday, honoring missing in action (MIA) service members and prisoners of war (POA). Loved ones, veterans, and active duty service members gathered at the base, participating in a moment of silence and watching as a wreath was laid in honor of the missing. "I had a father-in-law, Ernesto Castillo, captured by the Japanese in 1942," said Vicki Miller, who works at the Naval Hospital.For 26 years Miller made it her mission to honor service members like her father-in-law, organizing the ceremony each year on National POW/MIA Recognition Day."They were very cruel, they took out his teeth, pulled his fingernails and toenails out, starved him, made him walk that 76-mile walk on Baaton Death March," said Miller. Miller says while her father-in-law survived, he lived the rest of his life with guilt. She adds that families still waiting for answers endure another type of torture.
