BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Profits at Chinese industrial enterprises in 24 regions climbed 71.8 percent year on year to 1.61 trillion yuan (237.5 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday.The growth rate was 11.2 percentage points lower than that in the first five months, the NBS said in a statement.Combined revenues for the enterprises totaled 25.9 trillion yuan in the first half of the year, up 36.5 percent from a year earlier - a growth rate 2.4 percentage points lower than in the January-to-May period.Most of the 39 major industries posted year-on-year profit growth.The 24 regions comprise all of the Chinese mainland provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions except the Inner Mongolia and Tibet autonomous regions; Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan provinces; and Chongqing.China's industrial value-added output expanded 17.6 percent year on year in the first half of the year. But month-on-month growth began to slow in March, with June's growth at 13.7 percent year on year.

LANZHOU, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China plans to spend 2.23 billion yuan (328 million U.S. dollars) to improve disaster prevention systems in a mountainous northwest China town devastated by a landslide earlier this month, local officials said Tuesday.The planned multi-billion yuan project to prevent further geological disasters in Zhouqu County, south of Gansu Province, had passed reviews by experts from the Ministry of Land and Resources, said Guo Yuhu, vice-director of the provincial land and resources department.The plan is scheduled to be carried out in three phases from 2010 to 2012, Guo said.Guo noted that the project includes improving disaster warning systems, drawing up emergency resettlement plans, conducting a thorough study of the geological disaster hazards, and setting up a capable monitoring network.A late-night avalanche of mud and rocks roared down the mountain slopes in the county seat of Zhouqu on Aug. 8, burying villages and blocking the Bailong River, a major regional river.At least 1,447 people were killed and 318 remain missing, according to the latest government information.The mudslide left a thick layer of sludge, about 5 kilometer long and 500 meters wide, in the center of the town. HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with.
