A New Jersey woman thought her diamond wedding ring was lost forever when she accidentally flushed it down the toilet nine years ago.But thanks to a public works employee with a keen eye she was reunited with it.Paula Stanton, 60, received the gold ring encrusted with several diamonds from her husband as a gift for their 20th wedding anniversary. Nine years ago while she was cleaning, the ring slipped off her finger and down the drain it went."It was heartbreaking," Stanton told CNN affiliate WPVI. "I was embarrassed to tell my husband because it was meaningful."Her husband bought her duplicate ring as a replacement, but Stanton said she always hoped that maybe one day the original would be found.Two years ago, she talked to Ted Gogol of the Somers Point Public Works Department and explained what had happened. Gogol told her he had never come across the ring but would keep her in mind.Last month, as he was working on a pipe about 400 feet away from Stanton's house, Gogol saw something glimmer and shine in the muck. He plucked the shiny metal object out of the pipe, cleaned it off, and sure enough it was the long-lost diamond ring."That ring didn't want to leave her family," Gogol told WPVI. "There are so many things that could have happened. It could have been washed away, it could have been crushed, but it was just meant to be."Stanton couldn't believe the news when she saw a note on her door from the public works department.When Gogol brought her the ring she said, "You are like a Christmas angel."Stanton now wears both rings and vows not to lose them. 1593
A Milwaukee woman applied for a job only to be told by the company that they don't hire people with "ghetto" names.Quinntellia Fields says she received the email response on Monday after applying for a receptionist job at Mantality Health through a third-party site.Mantality Health has multiple locations in the Midwest. Fields said she was applying for a job at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location."First, I thought it was a joke," she said.The quick response looked legit, until she got to the line that said, "Unfortunately we do not consider candidates that have suggestive 'ghetto' names.""That’s pretty offensive," Fields said. "I was pretty shocked and then I was hurt."She contacted the company who told her the outside job board was hacked.In a statement posted on the company's website, Mantality says it's working with law enforcement and considering appropriate legal action."We share the anger and frustration of those who received these bogus emails," the company's statement read in part."Seems like the typical response," Fields said. "If someone’s in trouble on the internet, 'Oh it’s just a hack.'"Fields isn't the only job seeker who received this reply. A report released from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says a patient died after a nurse at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville selected the wrong medication to give them, putting at risk the hospital's ability to receive Medicare payments.In fact, the paralyzing anesthetic that was given to the patient by mistake is one of the drugs Tennessee uses to execute death row inmates during lethal injections.The incident happened in December of 2017. According to a report conducted by CMS, the patient checked into the hospital with a subdural hematoma and vision loss.The patient was sent to the hospital’s radiology department for a full body scan. When the patient told caregivers they were claustrophobic, doctors prescribed Versed, a standard anti-anxiety sedative. The report from CMS said a nurse told the patient they were going to give them "something to help him/her relax."The patient instead received a dose of vecuronium from that unnamed nurse. Vecuronium is a neuromuscular blocking drug that causes paralysis. As such, the CMS report says it can also stop the body from being able to breathe, in a painful experience for patients, who remain conscious and aware."Patients can experience intense fear when they can no longer breathe. A Manhattan judge ruled on Wednesday that a bar can legally eject and not serve a customer for wearing a hat containing President Donald Trump's campaign slogan "Make America Great Again," the New York Post reported. The judge ruled that there is not a law against political discrimination. In January 2017, Greg Piatek was asked to leave the New York City watering hole The Happiest Hour because he was wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat. Piatek claimed that a bartender told him that they do not serve Trump supporters. According to the New York Post, Piatek claimed in the lawsuit that the incident “offended his sense of being American.”Piatek's attorney argued that his client wore the hat to pay tribute to victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Piatek claimed he visited the 9/11 Memorial before going ot the bar. “The purpose of the hat is that he wore it because he was visiting the 9/11 Memorial,” Piatek's attorney Paul Liggieri said, according to the Post. A number of employers are realizing that the coronavirus is causing more parents to stress about finding child care.The Society for Human Resource Management looked into how companies are preparing for the fall and beyond as many children are staying home from school this fall.Some companies are allowing workers to telework permanently or are offering flexible work schedules. A small number of companies are even allowing children in the workplace or subsidies for child care.“Employers are still trying to figure it out,” Amber Clayton from the Society for Human Resource Management said. “The schools are still trying to figure out what they’re doing. This is an evolving process. It’s going to be changing. I just foresee that many employers are going to be doing things that as far as making accommodations they haven’t made previously.”The SHRM estimates that 45% of companies have not set a date for a return to work. Companies that are offering parents flexibility may be ones that are best able to attract and retain workers.“I foresee that many employers might actually keep those programs in place,” Clayton said.The SHRM recommends employees concerned about child care amid the pandemic should have a conversation with their employer sooner rather than later. 1281
