SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A Solana Beach cafe closed its doors after their outdoor dining furniture was stolen.Owner Marie Brawn stood in the vacant concrete pad in front of her beloved Homestead Cafe and Market Friday morning telling surprised customers they weren't opening today."I just couldn't do it this morning, so we closed," she said disheartened.Seven tables and chairs were stolen in a rash of thefts down Cedros Avenue on Tuesday morning before dawn.Brawn said when she and her husband arrived to open later that day, they were confused. Tables and chairs were knocked over and about a fourth were missing. At first, Brawn thought a neighbor borrowed the tables, then it sunk in."It was just this moment of defeat, just one more notch, like really, just one more thing we need in our way," she said.Brawn achieved her dream of opening a restaurant with her husband just 18 months before the pandemic. Her whole life has centered around food. She started working in the restaurant business at 15 years old and met her husband through work. It took 10 years to open Homestead.When the pandemic hit, she said, "we just pivoted, we became an organic market with our cafe and we moved everybody outside."Neighbors pitched in, the farmer's market loaned tables, the landlord allowed them to expand to the parking lot. They were rebounding from the closure. Brawn said each time the business was doing well and they saved up enough money, they would buy another umbrella for the outdoor seating."Small businesses are struggling, we're all struggling and to be hit with something like this on top of it all, sometimes you wake up and wonder what is the purpose of it all," she said.Looking around after the theft, it's barren. Brawn said they felt obligated to return the loaned tables, "we gave them their stuff back because we can't afford to replace it."Now they have seven tables and no way to scrape by. Brawn said they have to have maximum capacity with COVID-19 standards in place to start to make a profit.Brawn said she's fueled to continue because of the charity work she and her husband do with +Box."Right now he's dropping off about 600 meals, so each box feed about a family of four," Brawn said. The non-profit was created to fill a need during the pandemic, feeding struggling families. Brawn and her husband have donated 14,000 meals so far.The boxes hold grains, vegetables, and other items Brawn said are hard for families to get. The non-profit helps neighborhoods all over North County and Brawn hopes others will extend the same kindness."When you're down, help someone else because if we all do that it's like a domino effect and before you know it we're all going to be in a better place so we have to stick together," she said.Brawn created a GoFundMe for their restaurant and to help them continue giving to the community. South Korea said Saturday that North Korea has accepted its proposal to hold high-level inter-Korean talks next week.In a statement, South Korea's Unification Ministry said the talks are planned for Thursday.The talks were first proposed by South Korea to be held in the Panmunjom truce village in the Korean Demilitarized Zone.North Korea said it will be represented by a three-member delegation led by Ri Son Kwon, chairman of the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland Committee.South Korea stated earlier that its three-member delegation will be led by Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon.The announcement came a day after South Korean President Moon Jae-in teased the possibility of another meeting, this one among the United States, North Korea and South Korea.Moon said negotiations are continuing ahead of the "historic talks" planned for next month with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. He's expected to meet with Kim in April, the first time the North Korean leader has publicly met with a foreign head of state."Through these talks and future talks, we must end the nuclear and peace issue on the Korean Peninsula. It is necessary to make it possible for the two Koreas to live together peacefully without interfering with each other or damaging each other," Moon said this week.The meeting between Moon and Kim is just a warm-up for the main event, however, with US President Donald Trump accepting an invitation to meet with the North Korean leader sometime before the end of May.It will be the first time a sitting US president has met with a member of North Korea's ruling Kim family.  1618

(KGTV) -- Dozens of people gathered in front of a post office in Solan Beach Tuesday morning with signs in hand, pushing for the protection of the U.S. Postal Service.Tina Zucker, one of the organizers of the rally, said, “I just would like our country to have a postal service that works and to have a government with people who support it and don’t take it into our political realm.”As a succulent grower, Zucker has relied on the postal service for the last 15 years. She said there’s been a noticeable delay in delivery times.This comes as the U.S. Postal Service had announced the removal of hundreds of mail processing machines across the country and warned 46 states it may not be able to process all mail-in ballots in time to be counted for the election.“This has to get handled. You know, it’s America. This is the United States of America. We are bigger and better than the way things are going. And with the pandemic, we have to be able to vote with ballots. We need to be able to mail in our ballots with confidence,” Zucker said.At around the same time the rally was held in front of the location on South Sierra Avenue, the U.S. Postmaster General announced those changes won’t happen until after the election to reassure people that the postal service can handle mail in voting.Organizers said though there weren’t big crowds of people at this rally, they felt it was important to voice out their concerns and let the employees of the postal service know they support them.Susana Arnold, one of the organizers, added, “It’s really about if you see something that’s not right, you say something.” 1640
