SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local whale watcher captured a rare sight off the coast of San Diego this week.A blue whale and its calf were captured on drone video by photographer Domenic Biagini Wednesday about 12 miles off the coast of Mission Beach. The beautiful sight isn't something many videographers have the chance to see, Biagini told 10News.RELATED: Thar she blows! Where to whale watch in San Diego — by land or sea"This kind of footage of a blue whale calf pretty much doesn’t exist. It’s me and the Our Planet documentary people that have ever captured something like this. That’s about it," he said. The large animals generally follow the path of krill in coastal waters, Biagini said. If there's an abundance of krill the whales will spend nearly the entire summer close by, making for some excellent whale-watching opportunities."Last few years they haven’t stayed past the end of July because our water gets so warm that it’s not conducive to krill production," Biagini said.RELATED: Set sail in San Diego: 6 booze cruises you'll want to tryBut even with the footage, we still know little about the mating and breeding habits of blue whales, Biagini added."We have an idea where some of the animals are going to give birth, but that’s only a select few, and still doesn’t include any concrete evidence," he said. "There’s only a handful of people in the world to have filmed a baby blue with any kind of professional equipment. And an even smaller few to film something as intimate as I just did in what has to be some of the calmest conditions imaginable." 1572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A kitchen fire caused an estimated million in damage at a popular South Park restaurant/bar early Wednesday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said crews were called to Hamilton's Tavern & Cafe, located on 1531 30th Street, at around 5:30 a.m. in response to a fire in the establishment’s kitchen area.ABC 10News learned flames burned into the bar’s dining hall and caused some damage to part of a brewery next door.Hamilton’s owner Scott Blair said, “The first thing I thought is I hope everyone’s OK … you’re just like, I hope everyone’s ok because a neighborhood of people living in that building.”As nearby residents were evacuated, crews were able to knock down the flames within 25 minutes, SDFD officials said.Due to the heavy damage to the kitchen, it is believed Hamilton’s Tavern may not be able to operate for the next few months. The restaurant/bar has been shut down since July and was operating out of its sister brewery because it was larger. Hamilton’s had just started operating outdoors this past weekend due to San Diego County being moved into the state’s restrictive COVID-19 purple tier.According to Blair, the kitchen was their lifeline to stay open. With it completely destroyed they’re unsure where they go from here.“The pandemic has been a nightmare,” Blair told ABC 10News. “It’s gonna take more than this to hang it up. We’ll fight, that’s what we do.”SDFD officials said the fire caused an estimated 0,000 in structural damage and 0,000 in damage to its contents. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. No injuries were reported. 1620

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sailor who was rescued at sea off San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente was taken to San Diego by the Coast Guard Monday. The man called Joint Harbor Operations in San Diego about 11:20 a.m. to report his 18-foot boat was taking on water 12 miles offshore.“I tried a couple of things to fix the problem and couldn’t figure out where the water was coming in from,” Gillest said.He was able to radio the Coast Guard for help, who sent a helicopter crew to rescue him.“I was in contact with the pilot. He said if the stern starts going underwater, its time to get away from the boat,” Gillest said.  “The uncertainty was when I was getting out to me, watching it fill with water, I was like who’s going to get out here? Am I going to be in the water before anyone gets here?”By around 12:45 p.m., the boat began to sink and Gillest was forced to jump into the water. Gillest, who is retired military and a strong swimmer, says he was in the water for about 10 minutes. The Coast Guard deployed a rescue swimmer and basket into the water, who was able to reach Gillest, put him into the basket, and hoist him up into the chopper. “Not really scared because I know the coast guard guys and they’re awesome,” Gillest said, “Everything went textbook.” 1282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge is considering placement locations for a sexually violent predator convicted of sexual offenses against children between the ages of 4 and 9.Judge Howard Shore issued a written decision Tuesday that a proposed address on the 15000 block of Adams Drive in Pauma Valley was not suitable for the placement of Joseph Bocklett.A news release from the District Attorney said Judge Shore is considering other potential housing options.Bocklett was convicted of three sexual offenses over a 19-year period involving children between the ages of 4 and 9.He was sentenced in 2000 to a 17-year prison term before being committed to Coalinga State Hospital for treatment.Last year, Bocklett petitioned for the Conditional Release Program for sex offenders. He was granted conditional release to a supervised home. "I can certainly empathize with the feeling that people do not want someone like Mr. Bocklett in their community,'' Shore said during last Friday's hearing. ``I would be shocked if anyone wrote a letter saying, `We can't wait to have him living in our community.' I would expect that everyone would be opposed.''City News Service contributed to this report. 1196

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local brewery's decision to use compostable can holders is the latest example of San Diego companies deciding to go green.Pure Project Brewery made the change last month, giving its customers an easier way to take home 4-packs of beer while still being environmentally friendly."You have to make that decision; do I wanna do the right thing, or do I wanna do the cheap thing," says Pure Project Co-Founder Mat Robar. He says every decision his company makes takes the environmental impact into account."It costs us a good amount of money to brew beer with organic and local ingredients, and sometimes it takes a little longer. Ultimately it's the right thing to do," says Robar. The new can holders are made of recycled grain, leftover from the brewing process. They biodegrade in 200 days. And, if they wind up in the ocean by accident, they're safe for animals to eat.Pure is one of the hundreds of San Diego companies emphasizing the planet over profits.Right now, the San Diego Green Business Network lists more than 200 local companies as members.Experts say it can help build a brand, attract a loyal customer base, and also help make money in the long run."The efficiencies of going green has significant business implications," says Heather Honea, the Chair of the Marketing Department at SDSU's Fowler College of Business."If you're trying to build a brand that's meaningful for consumers, you have to speak to the things they care about. Your brand has to be associated with the things they care about," says Honea. In California, that includes environmental impact."If I'm deciding between product a and product b, I'm choosing the product that not only delivers a certain set of quality attributes but also is going to have the impact on my local community or local environment that I think is acceptable," she says.Honea also says that investments in green technology and business practices may cost a lot of money upfront, but they tend to pay themselves off in the long run. She says that's especially true for companies that stay one step ahead of local and state laws.At Pure, they say protecting the environment is their "North Star," a guiding principle for everything they do."It takes a little bit of effort," says Cheyna Swartz, the Tap Room Manager, "But it's definitely worth it." 2331
