SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Schools in San Diego County are readying emergency plans in case the coronavirus prompts schools closures like the ones in Washington state.At least a dozen schools in the greater Seattle area were closed Monday after health officials confirmed at least six deaths linked to the virus in that state.The San Diego Unified School District said in addition to cleaning efforts by its custodial staff, it was lining up outside contractors who could “provide large-scale deep-cleaning of classrooms or entire schools should it become necessary.”The County Office of Education said it planned to distribute a template pandemic response plan to all 42 districts soon with guidance on everything from prevention to post-outbreak recovery.“We’re lucky we don’t have any cases of community spread in San Diego County, so we have some time,” said COE spokeswoman Music Watson. “We’re using that time to think through, if we need to close schools, what about e-learning? What about community kitchens?”The Office of Education is encouraging districts to consider a range of “distance learning” options, in the event of longer-term school closures. Those options include issuing photocopies of lesson plans, posting recorded lessons online, and conducting teacher “check-ins” and tutorials by phone or web conferencing.Several districts have sent letters home to parents in recent days encouraging discussions about hygiene and handwashing, including Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista Elementary School District.“We get that people are a little scared and we want to make sure we do as much as we can,” said CVESD spokesman Anthony Millican.Millican said local district have experience responding to viral outbreaks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some schools are preparing for in-person learning and parents have mixed emotions.In July, ABC 10News interviewed the Batten, Campbell, and Chavez families. It has been quite a journey since then.“There’s so much uncertainty,” said parent Tancy Campbell.“We just don’t know what the future’s going to hold,” added Patrick Batten, whose three children are in the Poway Unified School District.Gina Chavez’s three children are in the Sweetwater Union High School District. The district was the first to start the school year in distance learning in early August. She originally described the first day as “crazy,” but said it has gotten better since then.“It’s been good. I have to say I think we’ve all kind of found our schedule,” Chavez said. However, she has dealt with what many parents can relate to—how to communicate the changes with the kids.“My daughter in particular, she really wants to go back because she is seeking that normalness of life before the pandemic. Every week, we’re having to talk to her,” Campbell said.Chula Vista parent Tancy Campbell goes back and forth on the best way to teach her two kids. In August, she wanted there to be a path to send her children back to in-person learning safely.Late Friday, the Chula Vista Elementary School District superintendent announced a plan to bring some preschool through second grade students back on campus. That news caught Campbell by surprise, as she was unaware of the change.“I don’t know to feel about that,” Campbell said. She is now leaning toward homeschooling permanently.“Each person [has] to do what’s best for their family and sometimes, it may not be going back,” Campbell said.Patrick Batten is looking forward to sending his kids back to in-person instruction. “Book learning is only part of going to school,” Batten said. He said his kids also looking for that social interaction.On October 1st, one of Patrick’s three children will be heading back to the classroom part-time. The Poway Unified School District announced a phase reopening plan for some elementary schools.“We’re happy to put him back, even if it’s only two and a half hours because at least he gets to be with his friends, see his teacher,” Batten said.His daughters though, will not be going back to school just yet. Batten said it is creating some tension in his household. In the meantime, he and his wife—who both work full-time—have enrolled their children in the Boys and Girls Club to help with distance learning. It is costing them hundreds of dollars a week.“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for us as the parents and the kids as well,” Batten said. 2642

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and teachers from two classes at Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley will have to return to online distance learning for two weeks after two people tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement to ABC 10News, Jenni Huh, the Del Mar Union School District Director of Student Services, said:“The District has confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School. All students and staff who were directly exposed have been contacted and will be quarantining for 14 days. The District has been in consultation with the San Diego County Department of Public Health.”Parent Amy Berkley said she was notified of the two positive cases on Sunday. She has two sons who attend the school and said her third-grader was in the same class as one of the people who tested positive.“They had two students in the school test positive, one was in first grade and the other in third grade,” Berkley said. “We got the notification on Sunday, and by Monday morning, all class materials were available for pickup, really easy and convenient.”While the positive cases are alarming for some parents, Berkley, who is also the PTA president, said she was pleased with how the situation was handled. Her son didn’t miss a school day as the classrooms impacted transitioned back to distance learning Monday.“We picked up a Chromebook, learning packet, homework worksheet, whiteboard all the material they’ll need; it was very well thought out.”According to the Del Mar Union School District’s safe reopening plan, if a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19, the whole class will quarantine for 14 days, and learning will be offered remotely. Substitute teachers will also be trained to give online lessons if they do need to step in.The California Department of Public Health released guidelines and recommendations for schools reopening for in-person learning.According to the department, two-week closures will be put in place if at least 5 percent of the total number of teachers, students, or staff test positive in a classroom or school, or 25 percent of a district’s population tests positive. 2126
