For perspective, only about 287,000 filed the same time last year.The total number of people still receiving some kind of benefits is just under 21 million. Meanwhile, some people who do have jobs are leaving a lot of money on the table in 2020.“If you don’t take time off, you are basically giving the company back almost a paycheck, like here you go, here's my one-week salary,” said Vicki Salemi, Monster Career Expert.Career website Monster found almost half of workers didn't take their full paid time off this year.The pandemic turned work life balance into an all-at-home blended mess for many. Many workers said they didn't take their time because there was nothing to do, nowhere to go, or they were worried about their jobs.Only a small amount of workers are able to rollover their unused time into 2021.Taking time off has been especially critical this year.“You can see things more clearly. You may even be happier thinking about your time off even if that just meant you stayed on your living room couch and binged the latest show,” said Salemi.Some employers, like Monster, even added mental health or additional days off this year, recognizing the extreme stress many were under.Salemi says even if you don’t have big plans for your time away from work, create some sort of framework.“It doesn't have to be rigid, but just so you feel like at the end of the day or the end of the time off, you don’t want to feel like it was for not, like its OK if you're just going to rest this whole time,” said Salemi.If you didn't get in all that paid time this year, depending on your circumstance, it’s worth asking to see if you could carry some over into next year.Now is also a good time to plan for 2021. The hurricane that swept ashore in Louisiana less than 24 hours ago has weakened to a tropical depression and is bringing heavy rain to western Mississippi.The National Hurricane Center says maximum sustained winds of what was once Hurricane Delta were clocked at 35 mph at around 10 a.m. local time Saturday. At that time, the storm was centered about 65 miles north-northwest of Jackson, Mississippi, and was moving northeast at 16 mph.Tropical storm-force winds gusts will persist for a few more hours over portions of Mississippi and southeastern Arkansas during the day Saturday.Officials say heavy rainfall will lead to flash flooding and minor river flooding across Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys Saturday and into the Southern Appalachians through Sunday.“Minor to major river flooding will continue across portions of Louisiana and Mississippi through much of the week,” NHC said.Hurricane Delta made landfall as a Category 2 storm in southwestern Louisiana. The center of the storm hit land at 6 p.m. Friday near Creole, with top winds of 100 mph.Around landfall, a National Weather Service water gauge at Freshwater Canal Locks, Louisiana, reported a storm surge inundation of more than 8 feet above ground level. The man accused of killing 22 people and wounding two dozen more at a Walmart in Texas is expected to be reindicted Thursday as he faces another murder charge in the mass shooting that targeted Mexicans, prosecutors said.Patrick Crusius of Allen, Texas, is currently being held without bond on one count of capital murder of multiple people under Texas state law. The 21-year-old has also been charged with several federal hate crimes related to the shooting, according to a 90-count indictment unsealed in February.District Attorney Jaime Esparza said the latest murder charge will account for 36-year-old Guillermo “Memo” Garcia, who died nine months after the Aug. 3 massacre in the Texas border of El Paso that’s considered one of the deadliest attacks on Latinos in recent U.S. history. Esparza said Crusius will also face more counts in relation to the dozens of people injured in the shooting. The new charges will be added to the indictment prior to the grand jury’s term ending on June 30, Esparza said.“We’re reindicting the defendant to include the additional death and to include all of those injured in the Walmart shooting in order to give the next DA all of their options,” Esparza added. “We just want to cover all our bases.”The upcoming reindictment comes more than 10 months after the mass shooting in the majority Latino and Hispanic city federal prosecutors say was sparked by militant racism. They have said Crusius carried out the attack to scare Latinos into leaving the U.S., a plot they allege he outlined in a racist screed published online before the attack.More than 20 people survived the shooting and suffered from injuries. The pandemic forced us all to make changes to how we work and learn. It also forced trade schools to find new ways to teach people their crafts.Students who attend Laguna College of Art and Design in California spend a large amount of time in a studio setting, at least they did.When the pandemic hit, faculty had to find a way to create the studio experience virtually.Some of the challenges have been giving students feedback, allowing them to see the work of fellow students and the dialogue that comes with it.“These types of interactions, they're intuitive, they're organic, they flow,” said Hope Railey, chair of fine arts at LCAD. “It’s just part of the day, so now those types of interactions need to be planned.”Railey says 6-hour studio classes take faculty 12 hours or more to put together.She says instructors use pre-recorded lectures and lessons so they can do one-on-one meetings with students.She admits it’s a work in progress, but says students are getting invaluable life lessons through all of it.“They're experiencing some of what life is like after a BFA program,” said Railey. “They're experiencing some of the challenges and kind of facing those challenges and the good thing is, they're getting services and help, like detailed granular help.”Railey says students are helping themselves by asking more questions about how to do things once they finish school, like how to do certain research.She also says doing classes over Zoom allowed the school to bring in artists and speakers they wouldn't normally be able to use. 1553
