SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 19-year-old accused in the fatal beating of a 56- year-old man near a pedestrian bridge behind Petco Park was ordered Friday to stand trial on a murder charge, though a torture count was dismissed by a judge.Dominick Wells is accused in the Nov. 18, 2018, beating of Edward Starland, who was left comatose following the attack allegedly perpetrated by Wells and four juveniles. The juveniles -- two girls and two boys -- face unspecified charges in an ongoing juvenile court case.Witnesses said Starland had been fighting with a group of young people the afternoon of Nov. 18 before he was thrown down and beaten. The attorney said Starland made lewd comments to a 14-year-old girl in Wells' group, then threatened Wells and the others with violence, including lifting the bicycle into the air with the intention of dropping it onto Wells' head.Dadmun argued that Wells only wanted Starland to leave them alone and that the victim had been harassing them for some time prior to the events shown in the video.Deputy District Attorney Mary Loeb argued that self-defense did not apply because Wells advanced upon Starland to knock him to the ground. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A comprehensive outreach strategy to expand testing access for Latino residents and other communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic was announced Friday by local leaders.The new program will kick off on Monday, with a new testing site at the Mexican Consulate in downtown San Diego at 1549 India St. Starting at 8 a.m., walk-up appointments will be available until 3:30 p.m., according to the announcement from San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego and other local leaders."We are prioritizing our response to health inequities in the Latino community by prioritizing efforts to help address accessibility barriers that are contributing to Latinos being disproportionately impacted by this pandemic," Fletcher said. "Whether you live in the south, north or east of our county, you should have access to testing and resources to prevent and treat the spread of COVID-19."The consulate will be the first of several locations in a 14-day rotation. Two other confirmed sites include San Luis Rey Church in Oceanside and St. Anthony of Padua in National City. Anthony Portantino, would require gun stores and the state Department of Justice to both check the validity of hunting licenses during a waiting period after gun buyers purchase a weapon and before they pick it up. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 41-year-old La Vegas man was killed when he crashed his motorcycle into a concrete guardrail on a freeway connector ramp in La Mesa, authorities said Thursday.The crash happened around 5:55 p.m. Wednesday on the connector ramp from eastbound Interstate 8 to northbound state Route 125, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said.A man was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he allowed the bike to veer to the right and strike a concrete guardrail, Christy said. The impact ejected the rider off of the motorcycle, over the guardrail and onto the traffic lanes of westbound I-8.The rider, whose name was withheld pending family notification, was pronounced dead at the scene, the officer said. 735

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 32-year-old man is expected to survive a stab wound to the abdomen after being attacked by a suspect who rode up on a bicycle and assaulted him on a bridge in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said.The victim was with friends on a bridge in the 3900 block of Vermont Street when the bicyclist rode up about 9 p.m. Saturday and stabbed him once in the abdomen, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect rode away southbound on the bridge. Paramedics rushed the 32-year-old man to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.No description of the suspect was available.
