SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Almost 2,000 people gathered in San Diego to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday at the 38th annual Human Dignity Award breakfast in Mission Valley. “He fought and gave his life not just for African Americans but for everyone,” said Dee Sanford, this year’s honoree. Sanford stared a telecommunications business in 1994, was an adjunct professor at colleges, and created public access television and radio stations. “You don't do it for honor but when someone remembers and acknowledges your work, it’s really a humbling experience,” she said. My father was part of the civil rights movement. He was our king,” said Sanford. Organizers said they hoped the event, which was held at the Town and Country Hotel, would leave each attendee inspired to help someone or do something good. Dr. King would have been 91 years old this year. 1036

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About 90 dogs are heading across the country to San Diego to remove them from the path of Hurricane Delta in Louisiana. The dogs will land at Gillespie Field on Thursday as part of the effort to evacuate the animals before the storm hits the northern Gulf Coast, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Once they touch down in San Diego, 60 dogs will be taken to SDHS and the rest will be taken to Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility, the Department of Animal Services, and Labradors and Friends. Once the dogs are medically cleared and behaviorally assessed, they will be made available for adoption."We are grateful we can help these animals and alleviate some of the stress on the shelters in Louisiana," said SDHS President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman. "They are just recovering from Hurricane Laura and now there is an even bigger threat. When we all work together, we can help more animals and that’s what we are here for."The flight is made possible by the nonprofit Wings Of Rescue, which helps fly endangered pets from high intake or high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters.Last month, SDHS, RCHS, and Labrador and Friends took in 130 dogs and cats from Louisiana as well."An animal emergency is an animal emergency, no matter where or when it happens,” said Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo. “Hurricane-ravaged Louisiana called for help — just weeks after the last airlift brought more than a hundred animals to San Diego. RCHS will join its shelter partners in making room for the newest arrivals." 1585

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard at Naval Base San Diego have been put out, Navy officials announced Thursday afternoon. In a statement, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck, the commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, said:“After four days of firefighting, all known fires have been extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).Our fire teams are investigating every space to verify the absence of fire. Until every space is checked and there are no active fires we will not be able to commence any official investigations. We did not know the origin of the fire. We do not know the extent of the damage. It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be.We cannot make any conclusions, until the investigation is complete. What we do know is that brave Sailors from commands all across San Diego worked tirelessly alongside Federal Firefighters to get this fire extinguished and I want to thank them for their efforts. This was a Navy team effort. We had support from the air and sea. Three helicopter squadrons conducted more than 1,500 water bucket drops, fighting the fire and cooling the super structure and flight deck enabling fire crews to get onboard to fight the fire. Tugs also provided firefighting support from the waterline, cooling the ship’s hull.We had 63 personnel, 40 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians, treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation. We have no personnel hospitalized. The Navy continues to work together with regulators, county and state in protecting our environment and preparing to address the community’s concerns as we move forward to the next phase.I’d like to thank our partners from state and county, the U.S. Coast Guard, and all agencies for continued support.”Ship’s shifting leads to evacuationCrews battling the fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were evacuated late Wednesday night after reported shifting of the warship.A Navy official told ABC 10News that fire teams fighting the blaze were told to clear the ship and pier shortly before 11 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after the vessel “naturally settled” due to the fire and water damage and was rocking slightly to one side.By 6 a.m. Thursday, Navy officials said fire crews returned to the ship to continue fighting the fire.Meanwhile, several groups are collecting supplies and other donations for those displaced by the ship fire and crews at the scene.
