A growing number of tech companies are making plans for their employees to keep working from home even after the pandemic.It's a move that could have an impact across the country for current employees and job seekers, beyond the typical tech hubs.“The tech sector is over-concentrated in a very short list of places – Seattle, the (San Francisco) Bay area, Boston – in a way that really is harmful to the tech industry but also harmful for the rest of the country,” said Mark Muro with the Metropolitan Policy Program – Brookings Institution. Muro has found that most regional economies in the United States are losing ground in tech and not seeing the kind of growth they've been promised. This comes while big tech hubs are dealing with more traffic and the increased cost of living.Muro says what's happening with tech jobs now amid the pandemic is a win for both the tech hubs and America’s heartland.“A lot of people complain that if they had their druthers, if they could get the same job, they'd move to their hometown or move to name it attractive heartland city,” said Muro. Facebook has said it will let many employees work from home permanently. It also plans to open up remote hiring for some roles and set up new hubs to support remote workers in Atlanta, Dallas and Denver.Twitter also says many of its employees will be allowed to work from home permanently. A day after David Ortiz was flown to Boston to recover from a gunshot wound, police in the Dominican Republic are working to find out why the legendary former Red Sox slugger was attacked in his native country.Ortiz, 43, was being treated Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital, two days after he and a friend were shot at a nightclub in Santo Domingo.The Red Sox, for whom the retired athlete starred for years as he endeared himself to fans across New England, sent a plane to collect him Monday after he had surgery in the Dominican Republic.Ortiz was shot in the back, and "the bullet went through his stomach," Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic National Police, told CNN.Before he was flown to the United States for further treatment, he was treated in his homeland for bleeding in his liver and had portions of his intestines and gallbladder removed, said Leo Lopez, his media assistant.Ortiz's condition was serious Monday, but he was stable enough to be flown to Massachusetts, said Sam Kennedy, the Red Sox president and CEO.One suspect is in custody, and investigators are looking for at least one other man in connection with Sunday night's shooting, police said.The reason for the shooting wasn't immediately clear. Virtual reality could soon play a role in helping during childbirth. Some women are watching relaxing scenery and listening to soothing sounds during labor with VR goggles. It’s part of the research being done at Cedars-Sinai, a medical center in Los Angeles. The research is being done to see if VR can help ease pain as labor gets more intense. “What we did find was that women found it very helpful,” says Dr. Melissa Wong, who specializes in OB/GYN and maternal fetal medicine at Cedars-Sinai. “That women were describing it … one of my favorite descriptions of it was a woman (who) spoke about it as being like a virtual doula." That's some of the early feedback from women who took part in the study.Wong says there were some women who found the headset isolating because you can’t see others. But she thinks VR could be useful, whether someone is using pain medication or not. “I think it has the potential for the woman who wants to defer her epidural,” Wong says. “And then the other thing is, there are women who also don’t get complete relief from an epidural or who still feel significant anxiety even after an epidural.”The full results of the study will include the pain management scores and will be released in February 2020. 1255
