PARADISE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Miles and miles of leveled homes line the streets of Paradise after the Camp Fire swept through. The destructive fire left students at Spring Velley school homeless. The one thing the fire couldn’t take away: spirit. Children’s spirits remain high, lifting the adults around them. The Spirit of Liberty Foundation gave them a gift this Christmas they’ll never forget, handing out stuffed animal, sweatshirts and T-shirts from the San Diego Zoo. “I’m really glad they’re donating this stuff, it’s really awesome,” said Jack, a student at the school. Jack is a seventh grader and one of the lucky ones whose home survived, but the same isn’t true for his friends. The school’s principal is also trying to provide a safe haven. “Each day we’re trying to bring smiles to their faces and today Santa did just that,” Josh Peete. 858

Police say a white gunman opened fire at a Kentucky grocery store, killing two African-Americans, after he tried and failed to enter a predominantly black church nearby.Gregory Bush, 51 was indicted on five counts Wednesday, including murder and attempted murder; none of them were hate crime charges, despite comments from authorities that the shootings appear to be racially motivated.CNN has reached out to a public defender for Bush and is waiting to hear back.Prosecutor Tom Wine said that because Kentucky's hate crime statute does not include homicides, Bush was not charged with a hate crime for the deaths."A hate crime designation only occurs when the judge makes such a determination at sentencing. If the judge finds a hate crime designation is appropriate, it doesn't add any additional time. The designation is only useful if the judge wishes to deny probation or the parole board wants to defer parole," Wine said in a statement.Hate crimes are considered more difficult to charge and prosecute than other criminal charges, largely because they require law enforcement to prove a specific motivation of bias.Additionally, federal investigators are looking into potential civil rights violations, including hate crimes, said Russell M. Coleman, the US attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.Bush faces two counts of murder for the shooting deaths of Maurice Stallard, 69, and Vickie Jones, 67, inside the Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, and in the parking lot outside, Wine said.Bush is also charged with one count of attempted murder stemming from what authorities described as an exchange of gunfire with an armed civilian. The indictment identifies the armed civilian as Dominic Rozier. Bush is charged with two counts of wanton endangerment for firing shots in the directions of two more people, Kiera Rozier and an unidentified juvenile.Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf said on Monday that the shooting is being investigated as a hate crime based on the circumstances, including the race of the victims and the defendant.Dieruf said investigators are looking into reports that Bush told a bystander before he was captured that "whites don't shoot whites."Bush remains jailed on five million dollars bond. His next court appearance is Friday, he said. 2340

Police said a two-year old boy died after ingesting medication at his grandmother’s house in Henrico County, Virginia Friday afternoon, according to WTVR-TV.Lt. We’re just lost for words right now.”?Neighbors said the victim has two siblings.“It’s a tragedy and I’m going to miss him,” one neighbor said.Officers said the incident remains under investigation. OTTAWA – The coronavirus pandemic has complicated nearly every aspect of our lives, even the most intimate parts, like sex. It’s always important to practice safe sex to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, but now health officials say COVID-19 should be considered as well and precautions should be taken.Wednesday, Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, issued a statement with tips on staying safe from the virus while engaging in sexual activities.“Sexual health is an important part of our overall health,” said Tam. “However, sex can be complicated in the time of COVID-19, especially for those without an intimate partner in their household or whose sexual partner is at higher risk for COVID-19.”If you choose to engage in an in-person sexual encounter with someone outside of your household or close contacts, Tam says to skip kissing and avoid face-to-face contact or closeness. She even went as far as suggesting using a mask that covers the nose and mouth.Tam says you can also reduce your risk by monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms and not having sex if someone is experiencing those symptoms.Tam also suggests limiting alcohol and drug use, so you and your partner are able to make safe decisions.Additionally, you should be aware if you or your partner may be at higher risk for more severe outcomes of COVID-19. That includes people with underlying medical conditions, those with compromised immune systems, and people living with obesity.“Current evidence indicates there is a very low likelihood of contracting the novel coronavirus through semen or vaginal fluids,” said Tam. “However, even if the people involved do not have symptoms, sexual activity with new partners does increase your risk of getting or passing COVID-19 through close contact, like kissing. Remember as with all social interactions, try to keep your number of close contacts low if possible.” 1919
