However, the stigma behind cannabis could be keeping some seniors from getting much-needed relief from chronic pain, as well as sleepless nights.Greg Saweikis is one senior finding relief through cannabis. But after a suggestion from a friend, Saweikis started taking cannabis, too.He takes CBD and THC pills by Stratos. He even uses a cannabis cream for his hands.  “It seems like it really has been helping,” Saweikis says. “I sleep a little bit better.”  But Saweikis knows not all people his age and older are open to using cannabis.  “I think there is a large stigma, still,” he says. “And it's just a holdover from the 60s and the whole, you know, from demonstrations and all of that kind of thing.”  Since the 1930s you've been told there's something really bad about cannabis that's always going to be there in the back of your head.  Leland Rucker is editor of Sensi, a magazine for adults with a cannabis emphasis. He says the stigma is still attached.  “And I talked to one woman who it really helped her start to sleep. She's all of a sudden sleeping much better, but she was embarrassed about,” Rucker recalls. “She was embarrassed to talk to people about it, because she had been so cannabis negative all of her life.”But Rucker says more older Americans are exploring, encouraged in part by their children and grandchildren.  “And so, you have to find out what the reality is,” Rucker says. “And I think that now that it's legal, we've given people that opportunity.”   1725

Whether it's an employee handbook or company-wide email, employers should have some type of documentation so employees and any customers coming into the office are aware of expectations when it comes to wearing face coverings. Valerie Keels, who heads up her HR department at Gavi in Washington, DC, has developed a mask-wearing policy for her office."The building has imposed those restrictions, as well, in the common areas so when people come into the building they have to wear a mask. When they go into the elevator they have to wear a mask. So it's just consistent with what's going in the building," says Keels.Keels has what they call a "Code Red" which means people can come into the office if they register online. It helps them keep track of the number of people in the office space. Once they get to the office, their temperature is taken and they're given a mask to wear for when it's needed.When you're in an enclosed office space, you can take off your mask. "And even when you're at your own work space because we're also respecting social distancing," says Keels.As for enforcing a mask policy, some businesses could come across people who disagree with a face covering policy."Employers have the responsibility to keep the workplaces safe for their employees and if this is something that's required and the employee refused to wear it, then there needs to be something in place to address that - whether it's sending the employee home or providing leave, or making modifications to the worksite," says Clayton.It's important for employers to work with people and their individual situations before resorting to reprimands. Keeping the lines of communication open so everyone's working environment is safe. 2814

Someone is making death threats against a 10-year-old girl at her school in Framingham, Mass.The girl is a fifth grader at Hemenway Elementary and the two notes directed at her have now drawn the attention of Framingham Police.It was Friday morning when the Muslim youngster went to her classroom cubby and found a note calling her a “terrorist.”“She was visibly upset, she was crying,” her uncle Jamaal Siddiqui said. “That’s not what Islam teaches, and that’s not what Muslims are.”Her uncle says the principal visited each classroom urging the culprit to come forward with an apology and sent an email to parents condemning the incident.“Hate is not brought from birth, it is embedded into a human being either by parents or their surroundings,” Siddiqui said.On Tuesday morning, there was a second note, this time saying “I will kill you.”“Just the thought of that makes me feel sick to my stomach,” Siddiqui said.The principal quickly brought the superintendent and police onboard, but despite their safety concerns, the little girl’s family has not pulled her out of class.“If we take her out of school it’s just going to show that we can’t stand up to the situation,” Siddiqui said.The principal says many classmates have rallied around the student and some disgusted parents did the same.“It’s absolutely devastating and I don’t want this to happen in my child’s school at all,” one parent said.“It’s nuts basically,” another parent said. “Hard to believe this thing could happen.”So far, school officials and police have not been able to ID the handwriting or trace the notebook paper.Her family has urged the young victim to smile through it and not become bitter, but know that’s a tall order for a 10-year-old.“It’s sad, it’s sad that kids at such a young age have to deal with this,” Siddiqui said.The girl’s parents will meet with school officials and police Wednesday to discuss a safety plan going forward.The FBI announced Tuesday that hate crimes in this country are up 17 percent this year. 2017

  

Speaking from a parking lot near his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Democratic nominee Joe Biden said that he would not make schools require students to get a coronavirus vaccine.The town hall was hosted by CNN drive-in movie style. The former vice president took questions from voters in a state that could be pivotal in this year’s presidential election.During the town hall, Biden repeated that he does not trust President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus. But he said he would take a vaccine approved by the Trump administration — if Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said it was safe."I don't trust the president on vaccines. I trust Dr. [Anthony] Fauci," Biden said. "If Fauci says a vaccine is safe, I would take the vaccine. We should listen to the scientists, not to the president."In particular, Biden was angered over comments made by President Donald Trump to journalist Bob Woodward that became public last week. In the spring, Trump confided to Woodward in March that he did not emphasize the risks of the coronavirus in order not to cause a panic. I still like playing it down because I don't want to create a panic," Trump told Woodward."He knew it and did nothing. It's close to criminal," Biden said on Thursday.Trump and his public health experts have been at odds in recent weeks over the timing of when a vaccine would be both approved and widely distributed. Trump has suggested that a vaccine could be available much sooner than some experts have suggested.Trump said on Wednesday, "We are ready to go immediately as the vaccine is announced. It could be announced in October, it could be announced a little after that."But CDC Director Robert Redfield said it might not be until the middle of 2021 before a vaccine is widely available."I think we're probably looking at third late second quarter, third quarter 2021,” he said.Trump later said that Redfield was “confused” over the timing of a vaccine."I think he made a mistake when he said that,” Trump said. “That's just incorrect information. South Carolina is in mourning after a sheriff's deputy died nearly three weeks after she was wounded in a standoff, the Florence County Sheriff's Office said.Deputy Farrah Turner, who passed away on Monday, was one of seven officers who were shot when authorities tried to serve a search warrant on Oct. 3.Another officer, Sgt. Terrence Carraway, was also killed when officials say 74-year-old Frederick Hopkins opened fire on them."Farrah was the ultimate professional, excelling at everything she did," Sheriff Kenney Boone said in a press release.
