SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The July Fourth holiday weekend is expected to bring large crowds to San Diego's beaches.Los Angeles beaches will be closed this weekend, and that has some concerned that even more people will flock to San Diego's beaches.Debra Moore lives in Encinitas. She'd like the beaches closed indefinitely."I think they opened way too soon, and we all saw this coming. They told us it was going to come, and I'm sorry so many more people had to get sick," said Moore.She said young people in her neighborhood aren't taking the pandemic seriously."Nobody is wearing a mask, nobody is social distancing. People are walking around my neighborhood all the time, or on the beach, just like it's normal, and nothing is normal anymore," said Moore.Del Mar Councilman Dave Druker also has concerns."People are very worried about lifeguards being overwhelmed and the whole city being overwhelmed with visitors, cause there's nowhere else to go," said councilman Druker.Tuesday, San Diego county supervisor Nathan Fletcher said it's up to officials in coastal communities to decide whether beaches should close this weekend.Fletcher also said all of the coronavirus outbreaks have been linked to indoor settings. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The final panel of a 14-mile stretch of the Primary Border Wall project was installed Friday, marking a turning point for U.S. Border Patrol, according to Border Patrol officials.Now there is more updated fencing in place compared to aging infrastructure. The stretch of new fencing replaced stamped steel, that's easy to climb, originally installed in the 1990's.The 18-30-foot steel bollard stretches a quarter of a mile from the ocean, to Otay Mountain. The old wall was breached more than 1,700 times, according to Border Patrol officials.RELATED: Funds earmarked for defense can be used for border wall, Supreme Court rules"Any upgrade we can get we'll take, this wall's been around for 30 years," Border Patrol Public Affairs Officer Theron Francisco said.The transparent feature of the new wall, vital for Border Patrol agents. Fiscal year to date, 149 incidents were reported, compared to 72 last year.Last April migrants hurled rocks at San Diego Border Patrol officers, shattering their Jeep's window. With that, it means less agents have to field a certain area," Francisco said. He said that means an area with seven agents could go down to two or three.As for who paid for the wall, each Border Patrol agent said the Trump administration. "So this would be Trump's wall, it was financed in fiscal year 2017, so it's starting under his administration and will wrap up under his administration," Francisco said.Border patrol is working on two other projects, one in Tecate that's a four mile primary fence and another that's stretches from the ocean to Otay Mountain as a secondary wall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The non-profit organization Border Angels hosted its 32nd-anniversary dinner on Saturday. The dinner raises money to help continue providing the services they offer to immigrants in the community, including water drops for border crossers, legal services, and shelter. The migrant caravan and the upcoming election were hot topics of conversation during the dinner. This year the organization honorees were Margarita Zavala, Kirsten Zittlau and Jacqueline Arellano. Zavala and Zittlau are attorneys. Arellano is the water drop coordinator for Border Angels. Border Angels' founder Enrique Morones tells 10News that he decided to honor women this year. He also encouraged everyone to go out and vote on November 6th saying the president is sending the wrong message about immigrants. Guests at the event also reacted to President Donald Trump deploying the military to the border. At a campaign event, the president was not backing down, saying migrants need to come to the U.S. legally.   1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The attorney for Rebecca Zahau’s family spoke Friday about the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s new review of her death at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado.Earlier in the day, Sheriff Bill Gore announced that investigators found no evidence that she “died at the hands of another”. The department will not reopen the case.Zahau’s body was found hanging a the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011. Her wrists and feet were bound. For years, there has been speculation about the nature of her death, which was originally determined to be a suicide.Zahau family attorney Keith Greer suggested Friday afternoon that the Sheriff’s investigators are corrupt. “It’s not a logical decision. There’s something here that’s motivating these folks to do the wrong thing,” he told 10News. “I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror,” he added. Greer said that a rational person would not look at the evidence and believe that Zahau’s death was a suicide. The Zahau family lives in Missouri and did not want to be involved in Friday’s briefing at the Sheriff’s Department. They did release a recent photo of Zahau’s gravesite, surrounded by snow and flowers.Greer said he and the family are disappointed in the Sheriff’s Department, especially after a jury recently ruled in the family’s favor during the civil case. The Zahaus plan to fight the Shacknai family in their request to have the civil verdict reversed and request a new trial. 1471
