SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City officials hope to get the construction process for a proposed downtown park, aimed at being an anchor for San Diego's East Village, off the ground this summer.The proposed 4.1-acre, million East Village Green will sit between F and G Streets stretching from 13th St. to 15th St. The massive stretch of green space in the heart of downtown San Diego will feature an 11,000-square-foot multi-use lawn, plaza and fountain areas, children's garden, 14,200-square-foot community center, dog parks, and room for food facilities, according to development plans.RELATED: Officials to break ground on county's first bike skills park in South BayThe green would also include an underground parking structure for 200 vehicles. "The City will be maintaining and programming East Village Green, and Civic [San Diego] hopes to start the bid solicitation process in late summer," according to Kimberly Moore with Civic San Diego. Plans show an additional multi-use lawn, children's garden, and casual park space in the park's future. Part of the construction process will also involve restoring nearby historic homes, which sit at the corner of F and 15th Streets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a woman lay paralyzed from a horrific accident, police say someone was inside her car, stealing from her.  The search for that thief is now turning to San Diego County."She was the nicest, most wonderful person I've ever known," said Don Nelson.Nelson says his wife of 27 years, Terri, was on her way to pick up her father for a hospital trip in August when a truck rear-ended her car at a stoplight in Riverside.  As she lay with her neck broken, amid the commotion of bystanders and first responders coming to her aid, police say someone got into her car and stole her purse.Detectives say within days of the accident, surveillance images show her using Terri's credit cards and writing checks in her name. Nelson says as some ,000 worth of purchases were made at various businesses, from fast food restaurants and Albertsons to Costco."I think that's the lowest form of life that could possibly be. You have to be a sorry person to do something like that," said Nelson.For three months, Terri was paralyzed and on a ventilator, until she passed last week from complications from the accident.  Her husband's grief is not the only emotion that consumes him. There is also anger. He's still dealing with collection agencies seeking money from the thief's shopping spree.  During that crime spree, police believe the woman rented a Nissan Rogue in Terri's name, before the CHP pulled that car over on a highway in San Diego County. The two men inside the car have yet to lead detectives to the woman, but police hope tips from the public will."I just can't believe a lightning bolt didn't strike the person. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are searching for a person suspected of starting a trash can fire that scorched the side of a Normal Heights home early Thursday morning.At around 2 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Meade Avenue in response to a trash can on fire next to a house.Some residents told ABC 10News they heard noises at the trash cans and the saw a fire begin to ignite.Screams from residents apparently scared off a person believed to have sparked the blaze.As fire crews arrived, flames from the trash can burned the side of one house. The fire was quickly knocked down before it could engulf the entire home.ABC 10News learned one person was displaced due to the fire; no injuries were reported.A description of the person suspected of starting the fire was not immediately available.Arson investigators are involved in the fire probe. 889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Civil rights activists called for change Monday following the publication of a cartoon in the San Diego Union Tribune the group described as an “insulting image”. Rev. Shane Harris, president of the People’s Alliance for Justice, and other San Diego leaders held a news conference after a meeting with UT publisher Jeff Light.San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen created a picture of authors James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, and actor Jussie Smollett, with the title “Famous African American Story Tellers," according to Harris' email. The image was published Friday, Harris said."It was egregious to us all," Harris said at his news conference.Smollett is accused of falsely reporting being attacked by two masked men in Chicago. He reportedly told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, according to the Associated Press.Harris demanded last week that Smollett be fired from his role in the show, "Empire."Monday, Harris said Breen apologized for the cartoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community activists spoke Friday at Lincoln High School, demanding a long-time teacher be removed amid allegations of racist and sexual comments made to students.The school board launched an investigation and put a monitor in the classroom at the Lincoln Park school.Activist Tasha Williamson went live on her Facebook page Monday at the school.“You better talk to our children like you would talk to your own children.
