ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 47-year-old Escondido man was killed when he lost control of his pickup truck and slammed head-on into a car in Escondido, seriously injuring its driver, authorities said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 2:05 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Del Dios and Mount Israel roads, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Smale said.A 47-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup was heading eastbound at a high speed on Del Dios Road -- which was slick because of rain -- when he lost control of the pickup at a left-hand curve in the road and the truck began to spin, Smale said.The truck rotated once counterclockwise and crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic, where the front of the truck struck the front of a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek sedan with a 27-year-old woman from Encinitas behind the wheel, the officer said.The Toyota driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene, Smale said. The man's name was withheld pending family notification.The Subaru driver was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash. 1269

(KGTV) - A dog owner is sharing her story after she says a neutering procedure turned into a month-long nightmare.On the morning of February 21st, Brigitte Yvon dropped off 2-year-old Yellow Lab Davie at her veterinarian in Encinitas to be neutered. Hours later, she got a call saying everything went well and she picked up her dog early that afternoon. For the next nine days, Yvon tended to him. Davie kept whimpering and trying to get at his back, but Yvon thought it was part of the recovery from the neutering. Yvon then noticed something on Davie's back."Fur was matted. Skin was raw and bleeding in places," said Yvon.She used a clipper and found more of the same under the fur. She took him to another vet, who shaved his back to reveal third-degree burns across his back. "They told me to prepare for what I was about to see. I was horrified and devastated," said Yvon.Yvon brought photos to the original veterinarian."He did apologize and admit responsibility," said Yvon. She says he didn't go into detail, but pointed to saline bags used to warm up and regulate body temperature during and after the procedure. Yvon says he agreed to pay for treatment. Yvon says the veterinarian has since filed a claim with his insurer.For Davie, the treatment has included surgery and several rounds of antibiotics. For Yvon, there have been plenty of sleepless nights. She has this message for other pet owners: Ask questions and educate yourself on the most basic of procedures.Yvon asked us not use the name of the vet, because her only goal is to increase awareness of the risks. Experts suggest asking your veterinarian how they warm up animals when anesthesia is used. Devices like warming blankets with temperature alarms are considered safer.The veterinarian who performed the procedure issued the following statement: "While I would like to respond with an accurate account of what transpired, it is my professional responsibility to respect client confidentiality. When this client called with a concern I responded immediately. I worked with her to identify how to move forward with his healing. We provided treatment for the wound and care for the pet and consulted with specialists and offered the best options, and the client was not charged. We understand that pets are part of the family. We want to make sure that our clients receive the highest level of care available. ENSENADA, Mexico (KGTV) — A San Diego dirt bike racer is recovering tonight in Mexico after a bizarre mid-race crash with a mystery SUV.On Saturday morning, about 60 miles southeast of Ensenada, 29-year-old Josear Carrasco was racing a course he knew well. On this day, he would not finish."Just devastated. It's really hard. He's my everything, so it's hard to see him like this," said his wife, Kylie.Kylie was in a truck along the course when she got the news. Josear was in second place, nearly done with his 100-mile stretch and about to turn his bike over to a teammate. That's when he says he collided with an SUV that had driven onto the course, headed toward him. "He tried to veer off to the right ... the car veered off in same direction. Then, a head-on collision. He doesn't remember anything after that," said Kylie.Josear was discovered by spectators and a teammate, with car parts scattered nearby."Something exploded. When they found him, his gear was just melted off," said Kylie.Josear suffered second-degree burns up and down the left side of his body and broken bones in his arms, legs, shoulder and shin. He also suffered a ruptured intestine, but he was alive."Once I saw him breathing, my heart dropped ... because that's all that matters," said Kylie.Josear has already undergone several surgeries at a hospital in Ensenada. His family trying to raise money for a medical transport back to San Diego, while Mexican authorities hunt for the hit-and-run driver. (KGTV) - Neighbors in Encinitas are warning people about the dangers of the Sago Palm after two dogs on the same street passed away from sago poisoning.Ronnie Steinau says her dog, Luna, died within 24 hours of eating some seeds from a Sago Palm."She was the happiest, tail wagging, loved everyone and 'she's the kind of dog that everyone loved because she was so sweet," Steinau says. "We had her for about a year. We miss her."After posting about Luna on social media groups, Steinau learned a neighbor had a similar experience."We had no idea there was something so deadly all around us," says Alissa Dalaut.Dalaut says her dog Saber ate some sago palm seeds in December and died a few days afterward, despite aggressive treatment from her vet."We felt horrible, and we wished we would have known how toxic and how fatal and how dangerous these plants are," says Dalaut.According to PetMD.com, the sago palm contains a toxin called Cycasin. It can cause severe liver damage. Other symptoms of sago poisoning include:VomitingBlood in fecesBloody diarrheaIcterus (yellow coloration of skin and gums)Increased thirstIncreased urineBruisingBleeding easily (coagulopathy, DIC)Neurological signs such as depression, circling, paralysis, seizures, comaDeathThe toxin is found in the sago roots, seeds and leaves. She has since had them all removed. Steinau also had a sago palm removed from her backyard and has plans to cut down another on her porch.Now the two women are warning others of the dangers in their neighborhood."If you have them in your yard and you have children or pets, you're asking for trouble," says Steinau.Steinau would also like nurseries to do a better job of telling people about the dangers associated with sago palms and other trees when they're sold.
