SHANGHAI, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for more efforts to promote independent innovation and upgrading of the industrial structure during his inspection tour to Shanghai which ended Sunday.     Hu visited scientific research bases, industrial parks and workshops of enterprises during the four-day tour, making investigations and research on the transformation of the mode of economic growth and work to promote sound and fast economic and social development. BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) would be open to opinions of business people on both sides before formal negotiations on details, a political advisory body spokesman said here Tuesday.Zhao Qizheng, spokesman of the annual session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at a press conference of the top political advisory body's annual full session, which will open Wednesday.Zhao also said CPPCC members attending the session would call for "more generous" concessions from the mainland in the ECFA since Premier Wen Jiabao had pledged to make concessions."The reason is very simple -- Taiwan compatriots are our brothers," Wen said Saturday in an online chat with Internet users.Formal negotiations of the pact would be held at the fifth round of talks between the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the island' s Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), two organizations authorized to handle cross-Strait issues.The basic content of the agreement would cover major economic activities across the Strait, including market access for commodity trade and service trade, rules of origin, early harvest program, trade remedy, dispute settlement, investment and economic cooperation.

SANYA, Hainan, March 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) said Sunday China is expected to become the world's largest tourist destination by 2015."China, as we predict, is going to become the world's No. 1 tourist destination by the year 2015," said Taleb Rifai, secretary general of the UNWTO."China is almost there. It is now the world's fourth largest destination when it comes to incoming tourists, and the rates of growth are moving so quickly that we think this is a realistic target," Rifai said.France is currently the country receiving the most international tourists, at 80 million per year, followed by the United States and Spain, both at 60 million a year, while China has about 48 million, he said."China's tourism economy has moved incredibly in the last ten years. The number of incoming tourists rose from 8 million to 48 million. The potential of the growth is still big because of the size of China," Rifai said.Rifai said the global tourism industry is improving but challenges remain due to the weak economy."The tourism industry has to follow and is very much affected by the general economic situation, and for sure the general economic situation has started to turn around. But we cannot call it a full recovery at the moment," he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has urged making preparation for a central conference on northwest China's Xinjiang that will make arrangements to realize fast development and lasting stability in the region.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged various departments to strengthen research on how to improve the livelihood of local residents and promote ethnic equality and unity in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.Zhou made the remarks at a meeting here Wednesday on the preparation for the central work conference on Xinjiang.Since last October, more than 500 officials from 64 departments have been sent to towns, villages, sentries, schools and companies in Xinjiang to inspect local social situations and collect people's ideas."(Xinjiang) has entered a period of fast economic and social development, with notable rise in comprehensive strength and people of all ethnic groups receiving the most benefits in history," said Zhou."However, Xinjiang's development and stability also faces many difficulties and challenges, and many new situations and problems have emerged, which requires us to launch deep research and mobilize the power from various sides to jointly solve them," said Zhou.In addition, he urged centrally-administered state-owned enterprises to increase investment in Xinjiang and explore and utilize local resources in a scientific and reasonable way.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- One of China's two leading State-owned shipbuilders, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), said Sunday that its profit in 2009 jumped 18.5 percent to 7.39 billion yuan (1.1 billion U.S. dollars).The Beijing-based conglomerate, which consists nearly 50 industrial subsidiaries and about 30 R&D institutes in northern China, also said its operating income rose 17 percent in 2009 to 120.9 billion yuan.General manager Li Changyin said the CSIC had overcome the impact of the global financial crisis, which crippled the global sea-based trade and brought down ship orders.Li said technological innovations had enabled the CSIC to build 180,000-dwt bulkers, 320,000-dwt oil tankers, 13,000-TEU containers as well as new types of drilling platform which can be used in water depths up to 400 feet (120 meters).According to Li, CSIC had also been actively engaged in non-ship businesses including manufacturing of wind power and nuclear power equipment, accounting for 40 percent of the CSIC's business volume.Li said the CSIC profit target for 2010 was 8 billion yuan. The operating income was expected to surpass 140 billion yuan and the CSIC output in 2010 was likely to break 10 million dwt (deadweight tonnage), he added.The CSIC, which has more than 140,000 manpower, launched an initial public share offer at the Shanghai Stock Exchange in December 2009 and raised some 6.4 billion yuan.The CSIC's main shipbuilding and industrial enterprises are based in cities of Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin, Shanhaiguan and Wuchang.The other major shipbuilding conglomerate in China -- the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is based in Shanghai, whose turf is mainly in eastern and southern China.
