EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A crash sent a minivan into the side of a building in El Cajon Wednesday evening. According to a witness, the crash happened near the intersection of Douglas Avenue and Orange Avenue around 5 p.m. The witness told 10News that the white van went into the side of a building and through a garage. Photos of the building show the vehicle lodged into a wall. At this time it’s unknown if anyone was injured in the crash. 452

DOWNTOWN (CNS) - Authorities shut down lanes of Interstate 5 in Downtown San Diego as firefighters battled a small fire that broke out in palm trees near San Diego City College's campus, just west of the freeway Saturday afternoon.The fire was first reported at 3:44 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.The CHP closed the right two lanes of southbound I-5, leaving only the left two lanes open. Ramps onto I-5 were also closed in the area, including the ramps from C Street and Pershing Drive to southbound I-5, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims. Firefighters had the fire knocked down by about 4 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Lanes on I-5 were going to be closed for at least an hour while firefighters worked to clean up the fire, the CHP log said. 825

(KGTV) - Plans for a new high school in El Cajon are facing opposition from neighbors.Literacy First Charter Schools wants to relocate their high school from its Lemon Grove location to a new spot near the intersection of Jamacha Blvd. and Chase Street. They bought an 8-acre plot of land five years ago on which they hope to build.Plans for the school call for a two-story building. It will have 22 classrooms, athletic fields, a 161-spot parking lot, and room for up to 450 students and 33 teachers.Officials with the Literacy First system say the old school is too small and too far away for their growing needs. They believe the new location will help them serve more families, and keep their current families from leaving after 8th grade."We hope it becomes what every one of our schools is," says Executive Director Debbie Beyer. "We hope it becomes a model for what great schools can be."But neighbors in the Rancho San Diego area worry that it will bring more traffic and congestion to an area that already has problems along Jamacha Boulevard."It's just incredible out here on Jamacha," says Veronica McGowan, who lives a block away. "People go about 50 miles an hour, and they're anxious to get in and out of these side streets. If you're turning right, you're safe, but if you're turning left, it could take a while."Social media posts on neighborhood Facebook groups raise concerns about delays at the intersection because of the addition of another school. They say nearby Valhalla and Steele Canyon High Schools already make the commute frustrating.Beyer says her school's small size will minimize the impact, as many students won't be driving. She adds the charter school system is ready to do their part to improve the roads and mitigate the traffic along both Chase and Jamacha."We have to add another lane. We're adding turning lanes. We're widening the street. We're adding sidewalks," she says. "We're paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to improve that intersection."She also says they're looking into staggering the start times, so not all grades begin at the same time, and having different start times from the other schools in the neighborhood.As for the complaint that the area already has enough schools, Beyer believes families will welcome another option."We let the market bear everything that there is when it comes to business and commerce and entrepreneurship," she says. "Why can't we do that in education? Why don't parents have a choice?"Beyer and Literacy First presented environmental review plans for the new school to the Valle Del Oro Community Planning Group last week. EL CAJON (KGTV) - An El Cajon family says a drive to see a fireworks show turned into a racially motivated nightmare, ending in a mob of people ripping off their car door.On July 4th, just before 9 p.m., William Gavin, his fiancee Alana Christman and their two children - a 6-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy - were driving on Lima Court, looking for Kennedy park and the fireworks show."Looking down at my GPS, when I hear, 'You can't come into our neighborhood,'" said Christman.Christman, who was in the front passenger seat, looked up."Caught someone at the corner of my eye. Saw this flame on my chest and it started throwing embers," said Christman.A cigarette had flown in through an open window. Gavin, who is African American, says he stopped the car, got out and saw the man who tossed the cigarette: a white man in his 50s. Gavin asked him a question."'Why would you do that?' Then he's coming at me ... He takes a swing at me, and I throw him down. Got into my car because my children are screaming," said Gavin.Christman says what happened next was surreal and scary."Completely freaked out. A lot of adrenaline and just upset for my kids," said Christman.She says 5 to 6 white men, many holding beer bottles, started yelling and attacking the vehicle."Reaching into my car and they were hitting him. There's a hinge on my door that's ripped off. The door was ripped off," said Christman.Gavin believes the attack was racially motivated."I know when something's racial, I know when someone is aiming at me. I moved away from Mississippi to get away from this nonsense," said Gavin.Eventually, Gavin drove off, parked around the corner and quickly called police. He says a Hispanic family approached, claiming the men just targeted them."They were throwing water bottles at their car saying they can't be in their neighborhood," said Gavin.The couple says police told them the man who threw the cigarette would be cited for misdemeanor assault."I want justice to start happening, I want things to start happening the right away," said Gavin.The couple says they're frustrated at police for not interviewing the Hispanic family or the angry group of neighbors.A police spokesperson says the man accused of tossing the cigarette is a suspect involving a misdemeanor charge of throwing an object at a vehicle. Police say many witnesses had left a chaotic scene and the investigation is ongoing. They tell 10News there were complaints of the couple speeding, and a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian suffering minor injuries, an allegation the couple denies. 2578

He left before a 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that killed three members of the group and later rejoined for a reunion tour, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.King was one of three writers of "Sweet Home Alabama," which was released on the album "Second Helping" in April 1974, according to Rolling Stone.
