1918 saw the rise of a global pandemic that brought huge societal changes. That was a different time and a different, far more deadly, virus. But looking at how two American cities handled the Spanish Flu reveals an important lesson in dealing with our own pandemic. One city stopped the spread. The other created an outbreak.On September 28, 1918, 200,000 people lined Broad Street in Philadelphia for a grand parade to promote Liberty Loans to pay for World War I. Marching in the parade: troops, Boy Scouts, and marching bands led by the famous conductor John Philip Sousa.Hundreds of thousands of people packed together. Despite warnings that the deadly flu was very much active among nearby military camps, city officials and parade planners forged ahead. Within three days, there wasn't a single empty bed in any Philadelphia hospital. Within a week, with health services overwhelmed, the death toll had reached 4,500 people. City leaders closed down Philadelphia. By then it was too late. But during that same timeframe in 1918, a different city took a different approach and was able to "flatten the curve" keeping the number of flu cases low enough that hospitals could deal with them.To understand the position these cities were in, you have to look back at the months leading up to their decision making.The virus that became known as Spanish Flu first appeared in early 1918. Rampant among military bases in both the U.S. and Europe, it spread rapidly as World War I brought opposing armies together in dire conditions.By the summer, the flu had tailed off enough that many health experts believed it was gone for good. But the fall brought a new surge of cases globally. And by September, city leaders across the U.S. knew the flu had begun actively spreading again.St. Louis handled this information very differently than Philadelphia. Within 2 days of detecting active cases, St. Louis leaders had forced closure for schools, churches, and any public gatherings of more than 20 people.The virus still spread throughout St. Louis. But through this "social distancing," the city kept its number of cases low and suffered far fewer casualties than Philadelphia. A federal official says the White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan this week as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed. That’s according to a federal official with direct knowledge of the plan who did not have authorization to talk about the matter and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.Meanwhile, Officials in Washington, D.C., say a man in his 50s has tested positive for coronavirus, marking the first presumptively confirmed case in the nation’s capital. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said Saturday that the man started exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 in late February and was hospitalized Thursday. She said another man, from Nigeria, who had passed through Washington has also tested positive for the virus in Maryland. Trump says he isn't concerned “at all” about the coronavirus getting closer to the White House after the first Washington case and an attendee of a recent political conference where Trump himself had spoken also tested positive for the virus.Missouri and Kansas also reported their first case as the virus spreads into the nation's heartland. The NASA SpaceX Crew Dragon took off into the sky over the weekend. It was SpaceX’s first crewed mission in history. For some, it seemed like a pipe dream. But the launch’s success crested a renewed sense of hope for the future of the industry.“It’s one of those things where any success in the commercial space realm is beneficial to all of the players in that realm,” Dave Ruppel explained. Ruppel is the Director at the Colorado Air and Space Port, one of the 12 licensed spaceports in the U.S. approved for launching spacecraft.He said successful events like this help build interest and trust with the public. “Things like the SpaceX launch kind of bring the average person into that discussion, and help them realize how much is happening out there,” Ruppel said. “Now we know it’s going to be safe. We know it can be successful.”And it could create more opportunities for the general public to experience space. “Their goal is to make that a possibility more for the average person, not the superhuman NASA astronaut,” Ruppel said. Space travel has come a long way, from historical milestones to a possible vacation destination. “When you get into the 1960s and people actually start going into space, there are thoughts about how we might create some kind of place where people could go and visit,” said Jennifer Levasseur, Museum Curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. “Fantasies about space hotels or the future of space travel.”She said while more commercial trips are possible in the future, there are some factors to consider. One of those factors is price. “Even a flight on the least expensive means...is really pricey,” Levasseur said. “This is definitely an elite thing.”And then there is safety to consider. “Putting a person on top of that vehicle really complicates that scenario, it ups the risk factor,” she said. “For somebody to just buy a ticket and go there, there needs to be a different level of security with that.” Space Adventures is one of the private companies offering those trips. “Space flight is not a risk-free endeavor,” said Tom Shelley, President of Space Adventures. “We arranged for the very first fair paying private individual flight to space. That was Dennis Tito in 2001,” he explained. They offer a multitude of adventures. They offer suborbital flights that give participants five minutes in space for a price in the six figure category, to flights a couple hundred miles above the earth for multiple days, which costs a prettier penny. “It’s going to remain in the multi-millions, probably in the tens of millions of dollars in the foreseeable future,” Shelley said. “And that’s just to do with the pure physicals of what is involved.” He said as flights become more frequent, prices may come down. But that probably won’t happen anytime soon. “This was a big milestone. It’s been a long time coming. The SpaceX Dragon was conceived originally as a vehicle fair paying individuals would eventually be able to fly on,” Shelley explained. As scientists and visionaries bring us closer to the final frontier, the idea of space tourism still raises a lot of questions. “Every time we’re successful, we build on that confidence that we want people to have in the activities. It’s the same thing that’s happened over years in aviation. And today we are all very comfortable with going and taking a flight anywhere in the world,” Ruppel said.“It’s going to be a little while I think still, until we see legitimate what we think of as space tourism,” Levasseur said. 3549
