DAMASCUS, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Sunday vowed to promote political, economic ties and people-to-people contact with Syria.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, made the pledge when holding talks with Suleiman Kaddah, vice chairman of the National Progressive Front.Jia hailed the traditional friendship and current cooperation between China and Syria in political, economic, cultural and education sectors and on international affairs, saying the similar experience of the two states in history helped to facilitate mutual understanding and support.China appreciates Syria's adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China on issues related to China's core interests and major concern, Jia said.China also supports the just cause of Syria for safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and backs Syria in resuming the exercise of full sovereignty on the Golan Heights at an early date, Jia said.Jia suggested the two sides strengthen political exchanges and mutual trust, and expand economic and trade cooperation."China encourages qualified Chinese enterprises with good credits to invest or set up factories in Syria, and supports Syria to export more to China," he said.Jia also proposed the two sides increase consultation on regional and international affairs, jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the two states and of other developing countries, push for a new, fair and reasonable international political and economic order, and promote the friendly cooperation between China and Arabian and Islamic countries.Jia suggested the two nations boost exchange at people-to-people and local levels, and promote cooperation in such fields as media, culture, education, academy and tourism.Kaddah, in his turn, applauded Syria's friendship and cooperation with China, saying China is playing an important role in safeguarding the world peace.Syria appreciates China for its long-standing position of settling international disputes through dialogue and enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation among all countries, he said.Kaddah reiterated Syria's stance on issues that concern China's core interests, saying Syria will constantly abide by the one-China policy.Jia and Kaddah both pledged to promote exchanges and cooperation between the CPPCC and the National Progressive Front.
BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's primary energy consumption will be kept to between 4 to 4.2 billion tonnes of standard coal by 2015, Jiang Bing, director of the development and planning department of the National Energy Administration (NEA), said on Saturday.Jiang made the remarks at a forum held by the energy research institute of the State Grid Corporation of China.Primary energy refers to existing natural energy which does not need processing, such as fossil fuels, nuclear fuels, biomass energy, hydropower, wind power, solar power and others. As China has adopted a low-carbon development strategy, the country plans to raise the non-fossil energies ratio in its total primary energy consumption to 15 percent by 2020, and carbon dioxide emissions per GDP would be reduced by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels, Jiang said. Thus, primary energy consumption must be kept to below 4.2 billion tonnes in the next five-year plan (2011-2015) to achieve the two targets, Jiang said.China's per capita energy consumption now stands at 2.5 tonnes standard coal per capita and, if left uncontrolled, China might see its energy consumption top 7 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2030, Jiang said. However, he explained that despite the huge total amounts, the per capita energy consumption would only be equivalent to current levels in Japan. Thus, the nation's economic growth mode transformation is quite necessary and it would be a strategic choice for China to control its total energy consumption in the 15 years, Jiang said.China's primary energy consumption topped 3.07 billion tonnes of standard coal in 2009, up 30 percent from 2005, according to the NEA.

XIAMEN, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to attract large influxes of foreign investment in the next few years despite uncertainties in the global economic recovery, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said Tuesday.Although uncertainties lie in the process of the global economic recovery and the development trend of the world economy would, to some extent, affect foreign investment in China, the next few years will still be a high-tide period for foreign investment inflow into the country, Chen said Tuesday at a ministerial conference at the 2nd World Investment Forum (WIF) in Xiamen City in southeast China's Fujian Province."Currently, many countries and organizations have rated China as the most appealing destination for investment, which probably would not be changed for a few years," said the minister.Foreign direct investment (FDI) this year is set to "surpass 100 billion U.S. dollars," compared to 90 billion dollars last year, an official with the ministry predicted on Sunday.During the first seven months of this year, China's FDI increased 20.65 percent year on year to 58.35 billion dollars, according to the ministry' s latest statistics.Meanwhile, some 14,459 foreign-invested companies were established in China in the first seven months, up 17.9 percent year on year.

TIANJIN, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday stressed the importance of scientific innovation in the process of shifting from "made in China" to "created in China".Wen met with entrepreneurs and answered their questions on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2010, or the Summer Davos, being held in north China's port city of Tianjin.Wen said transforming the economic growth mode through developing Chinese creation and service was a key issue if the Chinese economy was to keep a balanced, coordinated and sustainable growth.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao speaks at the symposium to entrepreneurs attending the fourth Summer Davos forum, or the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2010, in north China's Tianjin Municipality, Sept. 13, 2010. The premier said China would make great efforts to develop science and education, transform traditional industries through high-tech and give priority to the development of emerging industries such as energy saving, environmental protection, information and advanced manufacturing.PEOPLE'S LIVELIHOODHe said the country would seriously tackle the problem of social equality and justice through measures of tax reforms and income distribution.People should clearly realize that China is still a developing nation, he said, stressing that it was fully necessary to increase investment in sectors of food and construction, which would help improve people's lives in future.Wen also asked people to realize that Chinese people's livelihood had been improved step by step.Statistics showed that Chinese people's wage income grew 11.2 percent from 2007 to 2009, two percentage points higher than the GDP growth of that period.Wen noted that in China, labor costs are largely low, and they need a reasonable rise. But for most of the Chinese employees, the top priority is to find a job, while wage level is the second major concern. Therefore, the rise in wage should be kept at a reasonable level, so as to maintain the competitiveness of our industries, Wen said."Besides, we should understand that the rise in wage should be in line with the advance of labor productivity," he said.
