Baltimore, Md. — A Baltimore man is free after spending more than half of his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.Around 5 p.m. Monday night Clarence Shipley took his first breath of free air in 27 years after being exonerated on all charges for the 1991 murder of Kevin Smith.“Freedom feels good,” he said, smiling ear to ear.His mother Ola Shipley always knew he was innocent. He couldn’t wait to give her a hug. “I was waiting on that, God is good, I was waiting on that,” Clarence said. “I’m just waiting to go to church with her with my testimony.”Ola lost a lot of years with her son.“We were going into jail to see him, but we still couldn’t hug him like your loved ones that’s at home," she said. "You can’t do things with him because you’re always confined down.”Clarence's son, Clarence Jr., was forced to figure out life without his dad around.“Growing up without my father coming from the neighborhood I come from, it’s tough,” Clarence Jr. said. “You have to learn how to adapt to be a man. I’m just happy and excited to see how life is with my father, ya know?”He was right there with his arm around his father’s shoulder as they walked out of the court house.“It brought tears to my eyes. I just came home myself, and it’s like I don’t want to repeat no cycle,” Clarence Jr. said. “I’m just ready for a new beginning and to spend time with my son and my father.”Clarence was convicted based on the testimony of a man who admitted to lying to get a shorter sentence for himself. An eye witness said Larry Davis was responsible, but identified Clarence in a photo array.Four years ago, the 1627
California marijuana users can now turn to their smartphones to find out if a dispensary is legit. The Bureau of Cannabis Control on Thursday announced a program encouraging licensed cannabis retailers to post QR codes in their store windows. The checkerboard codes can be scanned by a cellphone camera linking the reader to the bureau’s online license bureau. That will allow consumers to verify that the store is licensed.Consumers will be able to determine which retailers ”carry products that are tracked, tested, and legal,” Bureau Chief Lori Ajax said in a statement.Officials said consumers without a QR code-enabled phone can also check a retailer’s license information by visiting the Bureau’s license search tool at 736

Bill Maher has a long history of drawing ire for his remarks made on and off his HBO show, "Real Time." And now he's being called out by fellow late-night host James Corden. The host of "The Late Late Show" used part of Thursday's episode to criticize Maher's remarks that suggested our culture should do more to combat the obesity epidemic and stop the push for body acceptance."Fat-shaming doesn't need to end; it needs to make a comeback," Maher said on last Friday's "Real Time," adding that "some amount of shame is good."Corden, who spoke of own body image and health, used scientific reports to back up his arguments that mocking other people's bodies can actually lead to more harm. He also talked about obesity as a systemic health issue with a range of contributing factors."There's a common and insulting misconception that fat people are stupid and lazy and we're not," Corden said. "We get it, we know. We know that being overweight isn't good for us and I've struggled my entire life trying to manage my weight and I suck at it.""Fat-shaming is just bullying," he reminded. "And bullying only makes the problem worse."Corden is one of several people, celebrity or otherwise, who has pushed for more body positivity acceptance."We're not all as lucky as Bill Maher. We don't all have a sense of superiority that burns 35,000 calories a day," Corden deadpanned. 1384
Boeing's 737 MAX jets will remain grounded for weeks after the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday afternoon that the plane maker continues to work on a software fix.Boeing had said it would submit the fix to the FAA last week, and it had gathered hundreds of industry representatives at its Seattle-area facilities last Wednesday to demonstrate the software changes. But the FAA said Monday that the company concluded "additional work" is needed."The FAA expects to receive Boeing's final package of its software enhancement over the coming weeks for FAA approval," the agency said in a statement. "Time is needed for additional work by Boeing as the result of an ongoing review of the 737 MAX Flight Control System to ensure that Boeing has identified and appropriately addressed all pertinent issues."Boeing acknowledged the new timeline, saying in a statement that the software change would be "completed in the coming weeks." It did not say why the timeline had changed."Safety is our first priority, and we will take a thorough and methodical approach to the development and testing of the update to ensure we take the time to get it right," the company said.American Airlines said Monday afternoon that it was aware the MAX "may be further delayed" in returning to service. It has been forced to cancel dozens of flights daily while the planes await a fix.American 1391
