KHARTOUM, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Special Envoy to Darfur Liu Guijin on Sunday urged the parties of the Darfur conflict to work to find a peaceful solution for the conflict through the Doha negotiating forum."The only way to resolve the problem in Darfur is through peaceful negotiations, through the political process, any boycotting of the political process, any choice of remaining outside the political process is not acceptable, is not conducive to peace and to the resolution of the problem," Liu Guijin told reporters after meeting with Ghazi Salahuddin, Sudan government official in charge of the Darfur file, Sunday in Khartoum.The Chinese official stressed China's support to Doha peace talks, saying that "we have been consistent in supporting the political process in Doha. CHANGCHUN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Soldiers and emergency workers are still struggling to retrieve the thousands of chemical-filled barrels that were swept into a major river by rain-triggered floods in northeast China's Jilin Province.Some 3,000 chemical-filled barrels and 4,000 empty ones fell into the Songhua River Wednesday morning after floods swamped the warehouses of two chemical companies in Jilin City, Jilin Province.The accident happened on the same day when Zhou Shengxian, minister of environmental protection, called for more steps to tackle pollution in the Songhua River while addressing a meeting on water pollution control.Though the river is facing the risk of being contaminated by chemicals, experts have concluded that the root cause of the accident is the irrational layout of chemical factories.MORE THAN 5,000 BARRELS RECOVERED AMID DIFFICULTIESMore than 5,000 of the 7,000 chemical barrels had been recovered as of 7 p.m. Saturday, local authorities said.Additionally, more than 10,000 soldiers and civilians have been stationed at 16 points in Jilin's Songyuan City, where the Songhua River enters Zhaoyuan City in the Heilongjiang Province; their task is to try and recover all the remaining barrels within the territory of Jilin Province.However, as the Fengman Dam, located on the upper reaches of the Songhua River, opened its floodgates Friday afternoon to discharge flood waters, the unrecovered barrels are now flowing faster down the river and it has become more difficult to retrieve them, said Professor Liu Guoliang, a chemist who is leading Heilongjiang's retrieval team.Experts are concerned that the chemical-filled barrels might explode if they slam into a dam at high speed, although the dams may be helpful in intercepting the barrels."The blue barrels are like time bombs. We don't know when any of them might explode," said Chen Yanpeng, a resident of Jilin's Yushu City, who has participated in the salvage work."In addition to retrieving the barrels, people should also consider why this has happened," Cheng said.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - Flooding was temporarily eased on the Yangtze River as the Three Gorges Dam on China's longest river saw water levels slightly down from its crest stage, the nation's flood control authority said Saturday.The water level at the dam fell to 158.54 meters as of 8 a.m. Saturday, 0.32 meters lower than its highest level of 158.86 meters which took place on Friday morning, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief HeadquartersThe water was flowing from the upper stream of the river at 31,000 cubic meters per second, said the office in a statement on its website.However, the water level was still 13.54 meters above the alarm level and is expected to increase again due to rainfall and water inflows from tributaries in the upper stream, the statement said.The office warned that the water level at the dam is very likely to exceed the historical level, if it rises again.Some of the country's other major rivers were also witnessing water levels surpassing their warning levels, including the Jialing River, Hanjiang River and Huaihe River, the statement said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in central China's Hubei Province that began July 23.He ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to be well-prepared for "more serious floods and disasters" .Floods in China this year have left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of Friday, according to the flood control office.
