HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. -- Health officials say there has been a confirmed case of Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, in Hillsborough County, Florida.The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater like lakes, rivers, ponds and canals, according to the Department of Health. Infections can happen when the contaminated water enters the body through the nose. The peak season for Naegleria fowleri is July through September. The amoeba is found is more common in the southern states, DOH said.Infection is very rare in Florida, as there have been only 37 reported cases with exposure in the state since 1962, according to DOH. Half of the coral populations in the Great Barrier Reef off Australia’s coast have been killed off because of warming ocean waters, a new study says.Between 25-30 percent of all marine species rely on coral reefs at some point in their life cycle. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef, covering nearly 133,000 square miles.It has more than 411 species of hard corals documented, as well as 1,500 species of fish and other animals.Researchers looking at coral populations over 30 years starting in 1995 found there was decline in both shallow and deeper water, and across different species. They said two in particular, branching and table-shaped corals, were especially hard hit in 2016 and 2017 because of record-breaking temperatures.The study finds climate change to be a key driver in reef disturbances that disrupt recovery.“The potential for recovery of older fecund corals is uncertain given the increasing frequency and intensity of disturbance events. The systematic decline in smaller colonies across regions, habitats and taxa, suggests that a decline in recruitment has further eroded the recovery potential and resilience of coral populations,” the researchers note.They also say the coral that spawn the larvae that makes more coral have declined dramatically over large stretches of the reef.“Corals are tremendously resilient because of their capacity to produce millions of babies but they/we desperately need a break from disturbances,” Andreas Dietzel, a professor at the ARC Center and a co-author of the paper, said in an email to the Washington Post. 1600

Google and Apple teamed up to create a software that allows a COVID-19 tracking app to work. It’s part of a recent software update on smartphones.Now, Virginia is the first state to make an app using the technology. It's called COVIDWISE. It's similar to contact tracing but isn't exactly the same.COVIDWISE uses Bluetooth technology to measure distance between different people and how much time they've spent together. Both people need to have the app installed.Users will receive an alert if someone around them tests positive for coronavirus and it won't reveal who it was.While not everybody needs to have the app, the more people who do, the better.“For every one to two app users, you're potentially averting one infection, so I think that's a good take-home message,” said Jeff Stover, Executive Program Advisor at the Virginia Department of Health. “So, obviously the more of them there are, the more potential infections that we avert.”The app is really only meant to notify people if they've been exposed to the coronavirus. It's not meant to eliminate traditional contact tracing.“Traditional contact tracing is still important. It is still required. It's really how we get in touch with people to determine if they have questions, if they have prevention activities that they need to figure out,” said Stover.Another thing about the app is that it does not use location data.
