SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- San Diego Pride festivities kicked off in the Hillcrest neighborhood Friday afternoon at the iconic Gay Pride Flag on University Ave. and Normal St. Thousands celebrated this year's theme, Stonewall 50: A Legacy of Liberation. The Glitz and Glam and the fabulous outfits at Pride are a product of dark times. "In 1969, being gay was considered a mental illness," San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Lopez said. "And the LGBT community was persecuted and prosecuted through legal and social systemic oppression and discrimination."In the summer of 1969, New York Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a place known as a safe spot for the LGBT community. Veronica Zerrer remembers watching the violence on the news. "When Stonewall happened, I was 12 years old, and I was just hitting puberty," Zerrer said. It was a turning point in her life because back then, she says she was hiding. "My name was Ronald," Zerrer said. "In fact, I have a really interesting story. I grew up being called Ronnie."Ronnie served in the U.S. Army for two decades and retired as a Major. The next year in 1999, Ronnie became Veronica. "Before I came out, I tried to be the person that I thought my family and society thought I should be, instead of what was inside my heart," Zerrer said.Fifty years later, San Diego Pride is honoring the rioters at Stonewall, who stood up against police prejudice. "This year, we are 'Stonewall 50: A legacy of liberation.' And the celebrations today, tomorrow and all weekend long are really going to reflect back in honor of our Stonewall generation. We'll talk about the legacy that we are all a part of, and what we need to do to recommit ourselves for the next generation," Lopez said. It is a big 'thank you' to their courage that inspired future generations. "Because you're not allowed by society to be who you really are, you have to almost 'perform' gender. SAN DIEGO, CA — SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego calls it the "Get It Done" App, but a Normal Heights man says he wants to know when work will get done."They block the sidewalk. They've ripped through my canopy. They've killed my two lemon trees," said Mike Scaglione as he stood in front of his home. He's referring to the damage caused by palm fronds that fall from two trees on city property he says are in serious need of maintenance. "It'll be seven years tomorrow that I've lived here and in that time frame I've probably picked up 3 or 4 hundred palm fronds."Scaglione said he's been trying for several months to get the city to keep up with the trimming of the two palms outside his home. "They say they're going to, or they direct me to somebody, but it just keeps going no where until it's a dead end." Scaglione says aside from the damaged to his property, he fears a potential for much worse. "Its kind of hard to see," he says, grabbing a palm frond from a pile collected near the trees, "but if you run your hand along here there's a pretty jagged toothed edge on here that if it was to land on somebody it could rip them pretty nicely."Scaglione has been using the city's Get It Done app. Past reports show crews have responded to clean up the fronds once they're on the ground. But when it came to a neighborhood tree trim last October he says, "They came through here and trimmed every tree on the block except mine." Scaglione said he asked the crews why. "They didn't have anything that could get up that high." Scaglione estimates the trees at 40 to 50 feet.In response to an inquiry by 10News, a city spokesperson sent an email explaining San Diego is on a two-year cycle for trimming city owned palm trees. Scaglione's block was on the schedule for October. But there's still more work to be done. So, does that mean the trees in front of Scaglione's home will be trimmed? "Yes," replied the spokesperson, "It is on the schedule." Though Mike feels like he's been here before."They would look into it when they were doing similar work in the neighborhood. San Diego (KGTV)- Today marks 18 years since the terror attacks in New York. As millions around the country reflect on 9/11, San Diegans are honoring those who lost their lives that day. A ceremony was held at the Veterans Museum, in Balboa Park this morning, where many had a chance to ring America's Freedom Bell in honor of the victims. The names of all nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives were read. "Its that fear of this could happen again," says Michael Timson. "That's why we have to have tributes like this; to remember, to be ready, and to honor the people who lost their lives that day."America's Freedom Bell was first rung 23 times for the law enforcement officers who were killed. The bell was forged with 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center. "I saw the second plane hit and I said this isn't an accident. This is an attack," says Timson. "It was really hard for me to understand what was going on."The ceremony symbolically started at 8:46 a.m. to coincide with the time in which the first tower was hit. "These are people, innocent people, in two buildings and the pentagon that were hit by terrorists," says Richard Rovsek, Chairman of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation. "I think Americans should never forget that."Bell ringers will receive a personalized commemorative certificate which will include a full list of the victim's names. Gavin Newsom declared an emergency Tuesday over wildfires burning throughout California as the state's power grid operator pleaded for continued conservation to avoid rolling blackouts. The grid operator praised residents and businesses for astonishing conservation efforts that kept the power on Monday night. The state is in a days-long heatwave that has stressed the electrical system and resulted in rolling blackouts over two nights last weekend. Outages, excessive heat, wildfire and the pandemic have people on edge. Evacuations were in effect or growing in several Northern California communities because of growing fires. (KGTV) -- If there’s a dangerous situation unfolding in San Diego the odds are crews with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are on-scene.Team 10 discovered the number of responses crews make across the City of San Diego are up by tens of thousands from just a few years ago."What used to be a busy station, looking at nine to 10 calls a day, now that's an average station,” said Chris Webber assistant chief over emergency operations. “A busy station is 15, 17, or more calls in a day.”Webber’s been with the department for more than two decades."The things that have changed, the complexity of the calls the quantity of calls and the technical expertise that it takes to manage the calls,” he said.With San Diego's booming downtown area, Team 10 wanted to know just how busy emergency crews are.Team 10 looked at the number of San Diego Fire-Rescue department's responses dating back to 2014.Across the city, responses are up by thousands.In 2014 the numbers showed 153,110 responses across the city. In 2018 that number was up to 175,147. Total responses are down from 2017, but still show a significant increase from just a few years ago.According to the numbers, the stations with the most responses are in the downtown, Lincoln Park and Valencia Park areas. Although, fire crew members say you can’t discount the number of responses made in the South Bay and Center City areas.“EMS calls are the biggest load,” Webber said. “We're running 82 to 85 percent of the calls are EMS."Here's the proof, station four which serves the East Village and its surrounding areas had more than 6,000 responses for medical calls last year. 1657
