U.S. President Barack Obama has also stressed on several occasions that U.S.-China relations would shape the 21st century.     Compared to the past, the current China-U.S. relations have shown new characteristics.     Bilateral communication has been expanded geographically against the backdrop of globalization, and the contacts involving China and the United States occur everyday at almost every corner of the world, not just between the two countries.     Moreover, the content of the China-U.S. communication has been expanded to every area, including politics, economy, military, culture and environmental protection, which is not limited to a certain field.     It's worth noticing that after entering the 21st century, the relationship between China and the United States has been increasingly intertwined with global issues, and the two nations have to face various global challenges together, not just problems of their own.     "The major challenges of the 21st century, from climate change to nuclear proliferation to economic recovery, are challenges that touch both our nations and challenges that neither of our nations can solve by acting alone," Obama said in Beijing after meeting the Chinese president on Tuesday.     As the China-U.S. Joint Statement issued after the meeting of the two leaders pointed out, under the circumstance of the international situation undergoing profound and complex changes, China and the United States have common responsibilities on regional and global security issues.     China-U.S. relations, the relationship of the world's largest developing and developed countries, reflect a new character along the evolution of world structure in this new century, that is, developing countries have been gaining more say and influence in the world, with their status on the international political and economic stage becoming more important.     In a changing world, the trend of China-U.S. ties has impact on the well-being of the future world.     Through Obama's Asia tour and his first visit to China, it is easy to see that cooperation between China and the United States will not only benefit the two countries and the two peoples, but also conduce to peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole. Such consensus has been reached by the leaders of the two countries.     Obama described China as both an important partner and a friendly competitor, saying the United States seeks cooperation, instead of confrontation, with China. He said the United States does not intend to contain China's rise and that he welcomes China as a "strong, prosperous and successful member of the community of nations."     It is on the basis of such consensus that Obama's China visit turned to be fruitful. The two countries reaffirmed the new definition of their ties -- a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century -- as established by their heads of state, and enriched their relations and cooperation with more strategic connotation.     The cooperation between China and the United States is indispensable for the world's development. It is presumable that the two countries' interests are to further intertwine and bilateral cooperation is to make continuous progress. However, the two sides must soberly deal with differences and contradictions at the same time.     Just as President Hu said, "it is normal for China and the United States to have some discrepancies since the conditions in the two countries are different, yet the most critical part lies in the respect of common interests and major concerns."     According to Hu, for an enhanced China-U.S. relationship, it is primarily necessary to establish strategic mutual trust, and politicians of the two countries are required to "have enough strategic insight and political wisdom" and to make joint efforts, improve understanding, expand cooperation and deal properly with discrepancies so as to push China-U.S. ties onto a new level.     "The Chinese side is willing to work with the U.S. side to push for the sustained, sound and stable development of China-U.S. ties so as to better benefit the peoples of the two countries and the world as well." BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- Competition between airlines and rail operators will further hot up on Saturday thanks to the launch of China's longest high-speed train link between Wuhan and Guangzhou.     The line stretches more than 1,000 km and will slash the travel time from Wuhan, Hubei province, to Guangzhou in Guangdong from 10 hours to just three.     Tickets for the service - which also stops at Changsha, capital of Hunan - went on sale at new stations in the three cities last weekend, with prices ranging from 780 yuan (0) for first class to 490 yuan for second class, said a joint document released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Railways. A bullet train runs on the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway on Thursday    The link, on which trains will reach a top speed of 350 km/h, is expected to pose a real threat to airlines running flights linking the cities.     "High-speed rail has three advantages over air travel: it is more convenient, more punctual and has a better safety record. This could help erode the airlines' market shares," said Si Xianmin, chairman of China Southern Airlines, the largest domestic airline by fleet size.     From today's launch, 38 out of China Southern Airlines' 160-plus domestic flights will compete with high-speed train links, he said.     A similar service opened on April 1 between Wuhan and Hefei, Anhui province, had already grabbed half of the passengers traveling from Wuhan to Shanghai, said Si.     The Shijiazhuang to Taiyuan link, also opened on April 1, caused sales for China Eastern Airlines' Beijing to Taiyuan flight to slump 36 percent the following day, while private Spring Airlines reduced its Shanghai to Zhengzhou flights due to competition from the Shanghai bullet trains, Beijing News reported.     To deal with this threat, China Southern Airlines last week unveiled several counter measures, including cutting ticket prices from Wuhan to Guangzhou by almost half for advanced purchases.     The company also signed a deal with airports in Wuhan and Changsha to give priority to flights to Guangzhou to ensure punctuality.     If railway chiefs over-cut the number of low-cost tickets on slower trains, as they did when the country's first high-speed link opened between Beijing and Tianjin last year, the airlines could win more passengers with cheap offers, said Zhao Jian, professor with Beijing Jiaotong University.     "But whichever side wins, passengers will be the ultimate winner," he said.     Wu Wenhua, a researcher with the National Development and Reform Commission's comprehensive transport institute, said developing high-speed rail networks is in line with the demand for high-efficiency, low-emissions transport.     China plans to have high-speed rail services running between 70 percent of key cities by 2020, which would cover more than 80 percent of the airline network.     About 16,000 km of railway for 350-km/h trains will be built on the mainland in the next 10 years, according to a blueprint by the Ministry of Railways. By 2012, work will be completed on 42 high-speed links covering 13,000 km, the blueprint showed.

HONG KONG, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Over 30 flights were canceled or delayed at Hong Kong International Airport on Sunday, due to heavy snow in the country's capital city of Beijing.     By 21:00 (1300 GMT) local time, seven departure flights to Beijing were canceled and 10 delayed. As for arrivals, eight were canceled and nine delayed, said the spokesman of the department of News Relations from the Hong Kong's Airport Authority. Flights to other cities including Dalian and Tianjing were also affected by the bad weather.     The spokesman said so far no special procedures were taken against stranded passengers for the flow stayed normal, and they would work with the airlines to smooth the situation.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States would work together for positive results at the Copenhagen summit slated for December this year, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday.     "President Obama and I agreed to expand the China-U.S. cooperation in the fields of climate change, energy and environment," Hu told the press after talks with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     China and the United States would cooperate with all sides concerned, on the basis of the "common but differentiated responsibilities" principle and their respective capabilities, to help produce positive results at the Copenhagen summit on climate change, said Hu.     China and the United States have signed documents of cooperation including a memorandum of understanding on enhancing cooperation on climate change, energy and the environment, and have officially launched an initiative on a joint research center on clean energy, he added.
