SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2-year-old boy who was reported missing by his stepfather in San Diego in 2002 suffered a fatal injury and died while in the sole custody and care of the stepfather, who disposed of the body, a prosecutor said Thursday, but a defense attorney said her client loved the child and didn't kill him.Tieray Jones, 39, told police that Jahi Turner disappeared from a park near the southern end of Balboa Park the afternoon of April 25, 2002.Deputy District Attorney Bill Mitchell told a jury that Jones married Jahi's mother -- Tameka Jones -- after Jahi was born and the couple moved to San Diego from Maryland in February 2002.The defendant was left to care for Jahi when Tameka Jones -- who was in the Navy -- went out to sea on April 22, 2002, the prosecutor said.Three days later, the defendant called 911 and said his step son disappeared in the park when the defendant walked to a vending machine."We will piece together what happened that week," Mitchell told thejury. "You're gonna know what happened to Jahi based on the evidence."Two days before he reported the child missing, Jones told his wife that Jahi had fallen off the bed and bumped his head, but it was "no big deal," the prosecutor said.Jones also complained that Jahi had wet the bed, according to Mitchell. Witnesses at the apartment complex where Jones lived said they saw the defendant carrying three large trash bags to a Dumpster just before the trash was to be picked up the day before the child disappeared, the prosecutor told the jury.One neighbor commented, "It didn't look like regular trash," Mitchell said. The prosecutor pointed to "glaring inconsistencies" in the defendant's statements to police about what happened.Mitchell said there was "no credible evidence" that Jahi was at the park that day. Despite a massive search, the child's body was never found.Jones was arrested in April 2016 in North Carolina and brought back to San Diego to face a murder charge.Deputy Public Defender Courtney Cutter told the jury that her client was a suspect in his stepson's disappearance almost immediately.Cutter said the defendant and Tameka Jones were used to just "getting by" and had very little when they moved to San Diego.The attorney said her client loved Jahi as if he were his own. "Tieray did not kill this child," Cutter told the jury."He was an imperfect father, yes, but not a reluctant one." Family members rushed to the hospital after learning Estrada Romero had been struck by a hit-and-run driver. She was walking near Cesar Chavez Parkway, headed to a bus stop. According to police, a white Ford F-150 turning right onto Kearney Avenue climbed onto the sidewalk and hit her, before taking off."The driver never got out of the truck. Basically left her right there," said Ramos. The scene that first day at the hospital: a packed emergency room, as family, friends, and customers turned out."They loved her because she sold really good food," said Ramos.For more than a decade, Estrada Romero became well-known for selling tamales at parks and schools in Southcrest and Bay Terraces. Some of those customers heard about the crash and joined the family at the hospital."In a way I was happy to know they were here with us, supporting us," said Estrada Romero.On Sunday night, Estrada Romero was taken off life support. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A battle is brewing between the San Diego bay cruise companies over which companies can start up again and which ones cannot. Some companies are cleared to resume dinner cruises next weekend, while others are still stuck at the docks. On Hornblower Cruises & Events’ Facebook page, the announcement is up that it's reopening this upcoming weekend. Wednesday, the fleet was docked but starting Saturday, the company is offering dining cruises through the bay. “At the moment, we have not been permitted to leave the dock,” said Carole Noska, owner of Charter Services. She told 10News that her boat and other charters still can't operate bay tours. County guidelines only permit recreational boating, not charters, and the recreational sailing is only for passengers within the same household. The County reports that dining cruises, though, are fine to set sail so long as they operate within the County's dine-in guidelines for restaurants.“We probably lost ,000 to ,000 over Memorial weekend after having already been at the dock for the last two months since COVID started," Noska told 10News and added, “Those of us in the legal charter community the credentialed vessels for charter would just ask that the County and the Port and the State level the playing field.”In a press release, Hornblower Cruises & Events provided an extensive list of safety measures its implementing, including social distancing aboard, and facial covering requirements.
