ORLANDO, Fla. — A Georgia woman who ran in the 10th Anniversary Disney Princess Half Marathon over the weekend says she lost a cross pendant necklace filled with her daughter's ashes on Sunday.Chasity Foster, a teacher from Augusta, Georgia, lost her 17-year-old daughter, Shaylin, in a car crash on her way to school last month. Shaylin was a high school senior who had been accepted into college to become a biomechanical engineer with the dream of creating prosthetics for children. Before the tragic accident, Foster said the two used to run several marathons together; including the Disney marathon."She was a very fast runner. She was involved in soccer, cross country and track," Foster told Digital Producer Veronica Beltran over the phone. Foster said this year they had signed up for the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge, previously known as the Glass Slipper challenge, — which involves a 19.3 mile magical adventure in two days including the Disney Princess Enchanted 10K and the 10th Anniversary Disney Princess Half Marathon.She said after last month's accident she was unsure about participating in the race. After Wesley Baker, Shaylin's best friend, asked his mom, "what if Shaylin would have wanted us to?" she knew they would in fact be heading to Florida for the race to run in her honor.Foster said her husband, Chris, ran in Shaylin's place and even wore her Princess Anna costume. During Sunday's marathon, Foster says she was hesitant to wear the cross pendant necklace with Shaylin's ashes because it means so much to her but she wanted her daughter to be there with her as she ran even if she wasn't there physically."I had my husband double check to make sure the necklace was on properly because I didn't want it to fall off," Foster said. "During mile three, I realized the necklace was missing. It's devastating to lose any child and then to lose the necklace I started freaking out."She said she was still wearing the necklace when they were in front of the Magic Kingdom parking lot entrance. A short distance later, near the princesses, is when she realized it was gone.She went to look for it with her family and friends, but wasn't able to find it before heading back to Georgia."To lose this necklace is just devastating and priceless. No amount of money in the world could replace this necklace," she said.Foster said the necklace matches her daughter's promise ring — which her father gave her at her 16th birthday — and has her name engraved in the back."If anyone finds the necklace they can contact me in any way possible that they can," Foster said. (KGTV) -- Five Oceanside lifeguards will receive the Medal of Valor for saving a man buried in rocks on the Del Mar Jetty last October.On October 7, 2017, the lifeguards received a call about someone stranded after his vessel capsized due to a wave.When lifeguards arrived, they found the watercraft upside down on the rocks but were unable to locate the man.After more lifeguards were called to the scene, they found the operator of the vessel buried in the rocks.Lifeguards worked quickly to free the man due to the impact of the relentless surf. More rescue units from the Oceanside Fire Department and Oceanside Police Department were called to the scene and eventually freed the man.The victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. 812
Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan.The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention. The Opa-Locka City Commission voted Wednesday on a 4-1 vote to repeal both the original 2007 legislation and a 2013 ordinance that said women, not just men, could receive civil citations for wearing pants that exposed their undergarments. Some commissioners said they felt the ordinance disproportionately affected young, African-American men. Around the city, which is northeast of Miami, signs still warn folks of the ordinance. "No bills have been passed in favor of teacher pay or funding, the frustration and low morale has continued to grow. We're losing teachers like crazy to other states."One of the authors of HB 1033, Republican Sen. Kim David, did not reply to CNN's request for comment. The legislative assistant for the other author, Republican Rep. Kevin Wallace, said the request for comment was forwarded to the state speaker of the house.
