SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Getting an education these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. But The San Diego Foundation has millions in scholarship money to award to local students pursuing a variety of secondary education options. Students like Jawid Habib, who received money through several years of college and law school. As the son of Afghan immigrants, Habib says his accomplishments meant a great deal, "I'll never forget the moment that I got my college acceptance letter at UCSD and I handed it to my mom and I'll never forget the tears in her eyes and I'll never forget the tears in my father's eyes when they saw that acceptance letter."As happy as that moment was, the reality of paying for school was still a challenge, until he found the Foundation. "It gave me peace of mind, that's one of the biggest things it gave me peace of mind because I was more focused on success rather than focused on how to afford my education," Habib said.Danielle Valenciano is the director of community scholarships at the foundation and tells 10News that last year the non-profit gave out more than .6 million to nearly 900 students. "If we're able to help offset hunger or homelessness or their books or a bus pass so they can get to school every day, we're doing our job as a community to help these students succeed," Valenciano said. The application process for next year is already underway, and there's money for all kinds of education, including community college, career and technical schools and teaching credential programs. Valenciano also says some of their donors are looking for so-called diamonds in the rough, "Students who may not have the best high school grades but there's something there and they have aspirations and they have a goal, these donors want to help these students."And hopefully give them an opportunity to achieve their goals, like Habib who is now a practicing attorney. 1921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Democrats have secured control of two of the most powerful agencies in our region - the city and the county.San Diego will soon have a democratic mayor and an 8 to 1 advantage on the City Council. Couple that with Democrats flipping the County Board of Supervisors after years of Republican control, and it appears a whole new philosophy is on the way."I've been waiting 20 years,” said Nicole Capretz, who heads the Climate Action Campaign. “This is, I mean, decades in the making.”Climate Action Campaign has fought the Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors for years over how it handles the environment, prevailing in court over the county's climate plan.“They've twice had to rescind their climate plan publicly, which is unprecedented,” Capretz said.Capretz said she expects things to change in January, when the board will flip to a 3-2 Democrat advantage. That is expected to shift how the county addresses key issues like the environment, public health, and housing - in other words, no more sprawling back country developments that many times wind up challenged in a public vote.“We have wasted so much energy and so much time debating things that were not legally valid and should not have been done,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Meanwhile, over at City hall, the Democrats will expand their veto proof advantage on the city council from 6-3 to 8-1. Republican Chris Cate is now the lone member of the G.O.P. on the council. “I think there needs to be a better job of communicating what we're about here locally as San Diegans, and getting our message out about what we feel is the best role of government in providing services to residents,” Cate said.The city has more than twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans, according to the registrar.San Diego’s new mayor and city council will be sworn in this December.The new board of supervisors will take over in January. 1932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Frustrated business owners in the Midway District say an old strip club was a better neighbor than the current property owner, which happens to be a church. The Rock Church bought the strip club, formerly known as The Body Shop, in August of 2018. Now, businesses say nothing has changed except there’s now more trash and drugs. Neighbors say they want the church to clean it up. Noor Shamoon comes to work at Navis Pack and Shop to a very unwelcome sight. “Food, trash feces on wall, on our vehicles.”He says it’s a foul odor and claims people who hang out in the area vandalized the businesses work truck. Employees at the Midas muffler business across the street also say trash and loitering have become huge problems. “We're trying to run a business and it's hard when you have that across the street,” said Gary Stricker. People who work in the area say prostitution is rampant as are drugs. One man reportedly overdosed recently. “I think he maybe shot up some kind of drug or something. We were concerned about him so we called an ambulance,” Stricker said. When The Rock Church dropped the banner over the “nude girls” sign at the former strip club, they promised to clean up the neighborhood. Since the church purchased the property for .3 million, they haven’t touched it. "I hope they do something about that to clean the place up you know,” Stricker said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Electric scooters are everywhere, even showing up on the freeways and on the Coronado Bridge.It’s an offense CHP says they’re seeing too often. Someone taking up the slow lane on one of the scooters.California vehicle codes prohibit electric scooters on any road with a speed limit of more than 25 miles per hour.CHP officer Jim Bettencourt says he’s even seen them on the Coronado Bridge. A sign clearly states that pedestrians, bicycles and motor-driven cycles prohibited.As drivers go onto the bridge, not even an inch of space exists on the shoulder. In fact, the City of Coronado banned the dockless bikes and scooters in march.If left parked, they’ll be impounded. CHP says fines for riding a scooter or a bike on the freeway can be up to ,000. 780
