When you go out to eat or visit the grocery store, you’ll probably spot an employee wiping down tables or spraying carts with disinfectant. These sanitizers can kill the novel coronavirus, but doctors warn some can also cause chemical burns and allergic reactions on your skin.“Depending on the strength of these disinfectants, they can cause damage to the skin. They can react like a burn would, which can appear with significant redness or swelling to the skin,” said Dr. Frederick Davis, who works in the emergency department at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. One Florida family believes their baby got a chemical burn after sitting in a Walmart cart sprayed with disinfectant.Davis said alcohol, bleach and ammonia, often used in commercial sanitizers, can create that reaction.“A lot of these cases, unfortunately, happen because people think it’s a disinfectant, it kills bacteria and viruses, it’s safe to apply to the skin, but it definitely isn’t,” he said.Environmental Biology Professor at the University of Arizona Dr. Charles Gerba said commercial disinfectant can be harmful to skin until it dries completely.“You don’t want to put the child down in the seat if it’s wet with disinfectant,” warned Gerba.Parents should dry carts or any surface covered in disinfectant before letting kids touch them, but experts caution, disinfectants may not work properly if they cannot dry on their own.So, to keep your kids safe and kill the germs, Dr. Gerba recommends placing a towel down in the cart or using a baby wipe to remove harsh chemicals that can build up over time.“That’s one of my concerns,” said Gerba. “You keep adding these chemical disinfectants on every single day, they’re subject to misuse, like not drying enough, so you might get some exposure,” he said.Because of these dangers, Dr. Gerba is experimenting with a replacement for commercial grade sanitizers with a company called Allied Bioscience. It’s a spray coating that sticks to any surface, even touch screens, and kills bacteria and viruses for months at a time.“It’s the same principle as odor eater socks,” said Gerba. “The reason the socks didn’t smell is it killed the bacteria that caused the odors,” he explained.Michael Ruley is the CEO of Allied Bioscience and said he hopes this coating will make its way onto airplanes, into schools and grocery stores soon. “With this coating going down, it gets ahead of the threat and is proactive instead of reactive,” Ruley said. This new technology is still getting approved by the EPA, but studies show it can fight the coronavirus.“They killed the coronavirus pretty well, like 99 percent or more, within a few minutes sometimes,” Gerba said. This product needs to be applied once every 90 days to remain effective, which would lift much of the workload off employees to clean places.“That’s the whole goal is to get people back feeling comfortable in the environment and be able to go out and enjoy their environment,” said Ruley. But until the frequent sanitizing ends, Dr. Gerba warns just because a surface is clean, doesn’t mean it’s safe for you or your kids to touch. He said the best way to protect your skin is to immediately wash your hands after touching anything that’s been sanitized. 3243

West Virginia legislators scrambled Monday to see whether there is enough money to meet teacher pay demands and end a strike that has dragged into its eighth day.A legislative conference committee appointed to resolve differences between the state Senate and House is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m."We recognize the urgency of this situation," said Delegate Paul Espinosa, chair of the House Education Committee and co-chair of the conference committee on House Bill 4145, the pay raise legislation.Gov. Jim Justice and the union leaders last week agreed that teachers and service personnel would receive a 5% pay raise. The House approved the proposal, but the Senate passed a 4% raise. Union leaders say the teachers won't return to work until they get a 5% raise.Espinosa said he has been speaking with his counterpart in the Senate, Majority Leader Ryan Ferns, "on how we would like to proceed with the committee's work to resolve the differences" between the Senate and the House of Delegates.Democrats in the Legislature say new revenue projections show the money is there and that a 5% raise would amount to million more in spending than a 4% bump."This situation has evolved very quickly in recent days, and we want to make sure committee members have a full array of accurate information available to make a well-informed decision," Espinosa said.."To accomplish that, we have instructed our respective Finance Committee staffs to pull data and put together the necessary fiscal information, and have separately reached out to the Governor's Office staff to ask for more budgetary information from the executive branch."West Virginia public school teachers are continuing their strike because the Legislature didn't meet their demand for higher pay and better benefits over the weekend. All 55 counties announced school closures for Monday. About 20,000 teachers walked out February 22, keeping almost 277,000 students out of class.West Virginia public school teachers earn an average salary of about ,000, making them among the lowest paid educators in the United States. School service personnel are also walking out.The pay raise must be passed as a law, since West Virginia is not a collective bargaining state. The House bill with the 5% raise quickly passed Wednesday, but Senate lawmakers expressed concern about how the state will fund the raise and passed the 4% version on Saturday after hours of debate and discussion. The House voted not to adopt the 4% version of the bill. With no agreement between the chambers, the conference committee was created. Three members from the House and three from the Senate -- two Republicans and one Democrat -- were selected. The group has until Tuesday to come to a decision about the bill. The House and the Senate could extend that deadline. If a meeting of the minds eventually fails, an earlier law specifying a 2% raise for teachers' pay would kick in, and then 1% over two years. The issue of teachers' pay isn't restricted to West Virginia. In Oklahoma, public school teachers are considering a statewide strike over their salaries.West Virginia teachers are equally unhappy with their employee health insurance program. Tentative agreements on pay did not include a fix to the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA), which employees say requires them to pay premiums that are too high.A task force on the health insurance issue meets March 13. 3419

Wisconsin voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday for primary elections, and Democrat voters will select from a crowded ballot of gubernatorial candidates.A total of 10 candidates are on the Democratic primary ballot — but one of them is telling voters to skip his name."I could never imagine that I would be asking people not to vote for me," candidate Andy Gronik said.Gronik withdrew from the race last month, but not before ballots were printed. "I've already received some emails from people who have voted for me, and they were disappointed to learn I wasn't in the race," Gronik said.Dana Wachs is also still on the ballot, in the last spot, but he's also withdrawn as well. There are eight other candidates that hope to go up against Gov. Scott Walker in November: Matt Flynn, Tony Evers, Josh Pade, Mike McCabe, Paul Soglin, Kathleen Vinehout, Mahlon Mitchell and Kelda Roys. Some Wisconsinites did not even know who was running."What I had in mind is to Google it tonight for a little bit of information before I go vote tomorrow," Walker's Point voter Simon Rodrigeuz said. Others said it was hard to narrow it down."There was definitely a lot to pick from. A lot of them are good too," Lisa Vulpas saidThat's why candidates are using every second before the election. Roys went to Milwaukee Public Market this Monday afternoon as a last push before the polls opened on Tuesday."We have been communicating with voters more and for longer periods. We have been on TV for almost a month," Roys said.Mitchell rallied his volunteer door knockers in Milwaukee Monday evening."What distinguishes us is, yes we are running a statewide campaign, but we are running it like we are running a local election. And that is to get out and talk to people," Mitchell said.  1822

When he was a US attorney in Florida, Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta gave accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein the "deal of a lifetime," the Miami Herald reported Wednesday. In a sweeping review of the politically connected multimillionaire's case, the Herald explained how Acosta made an agreement with Epstein to avoid major repercussions for the hedge fund manager, even though a federal investigation identified 36 underage victims. The report said Acosta forged a deal with one of Epstein's attorneys where he pleaded to two state prostitution charges, ultimately serving only 13 months and avoiding a federal trial. The agreement, the Herald said, "essentially shut down an ongoing FBI probe" and further granted immunity to "any potential co-conspirators" in the case.Epstein also registered as a sex offender and paid restitution to the victims identified by the FBI.The paper said it learned that Epstein provided information to federal investigators, but did not detail what the information was. It did note, however, that the Epstein case occurred around the same time as the economic crisis of 2008 and that records showed Epstein was a witness in the prosecution of executives at the failed investment bank Bear Stearns. The Herald said neither Epstein nor his attorney Jack Goldberger responded to its requests for comment. CNN has also reached out to Goldberger for comment.Eric Holland, a spokesperson for the Department of Labor, said in an emailed response to the report that "this matter has been publicly addressed previously, including during confirmation hearings.""The US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida has defended the actions in this case across three administrations, and the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida is the appropriate office for your inquiry," Holland said.Sarah Schall, a spokesperson for the Southern District of Florida, told CNN the office declined to comment. The Herald said it found about 80 women Epstein allegedly molested or sexually abused over a five-year period, and the report charged that even Epstein's state prison time was lax, being housed in a private wing at the Palm Beach County jail and allowed work release privileges.Epstein was friends with President Donald Trump and former President Bill Clinton, and his legal team included Alan Dershowitz and Kenneth Starr, the report noted.Trump nominated Acosta to lead the Department of Labor last year after his first choice, Andrew Puzder, withdrew himself from contention.Acosta defended his handling of the Epstein case during his confirmation hearing."At the end of the day, based on the evidence, professionals within a prosecutor's office decide that a plea -- that guarantees that someone goes to jail, that guarantees that someone register generally and that guarantees other outcomes -- is a good thing," he said last year. The report noted a pair of lawsuits await further action in the courts, and in one, the Herald said, women argue Acosta and other federal prosecutors broke the law in their handling of the case.The-CNN-Wire 3095
