Police in Northern California say a nurse driving home from her shift at a hospital was assaulted after she encountered a group of protesters who say she intentionally drove into the crowd. Santa Rosa police say they are investigating but add that video evidence does not show that the woman purposely drove into about 100 people marching Saturday night. The woman told officers she was punched in the face by a man who followed her after she drove away from a “swarm” of people blocking her vehicle. Protesters initially said a teenager on a bicycle had been injured but no victims have come forward to police."SRPD officers met with several protesters who believed that the driver of the SUV intentionally drove through the crowd. There was some discrepancy as to how fast the vehicle was driving. Several protesters provided video footage of the incident to the officers on scene," police said in a statement. "The videos show the protesters taking over all lanes of traffic on Sonoma Avenue, heading eastbound. It also showed it was dark outside. In the videos, it is clear that the vehicle is approaching the crowd and you can hear several people yelling profanities at the driver. At one point, protesters surround the vehicle and the vehicle is struck by several unknown objects and a skateboard. Because the vehicles’ path was blocked by protesters, the driver tried to maneuver her way out of the crowd until her path was clear. There is no indication from the videos that the driver was trying to run over protesters on purpose."Video of the incident has not been released. 1591

Police in Paris have fired tear gas and used water cannon against protesters on the Champs Elysées, in the center of the French capital. The "yellow vest" protests, which began as a campaign against rising gas prices, have morphed into a wider demonstration against the government of President Emmanuel Macron in recent weeks.Police say they have mobilized 3,000 officers in Paris to contain the 8,000 protesters. A security perimeter has been set up in the city center, with government buildings protected. Three people have been arrested so far.At a news conference on Saturday, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner blamed the clashes on far-right extremists infiltrating the demonstrations."Today, the far right has mobilized," he told reporters. "The security forces perfectly anticipated this situation."Far-right political leader Marine Le Pen rejected the accusations, describing it as a "pathetic and dishonest" form of "political manipulation" by the government.Earlier Castaner said of the protesters: "Their freedom of expression will be guaranteed, but it must not be exercised to the detriment of security, public order and the right of everybody to come and go. There is no liberty without public order."Last weekend a protester was accidentally run over and killed by a car, and more than 200 people were injured during a demonstration in eastern France. 1384

PASADENA, Calif. (CNS) - The Pasadena Tournament of Roses announced that in lieu of the annual parade canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will host a two-hour televised entertainment special on New Year's Day to benefit Feeding America.Event coordinators issued a statement Thursday saying they have partnered with six broadcasters to air the show during the time slot traditionally reserved for live coverage of the Rose Parade. "The Rose Parade's New Year Celebration presented by Honda" will feature live-to-tape musical entertainment, celebrity guests, memorable past floats, marching band performances and past Rose Bowl Game football highlights."We are beyond excited about the upcoming New Year's Day television special and the unique opportunity it gives us to not only entertain our worldwide audience in new and dynamic ways, but also honor the Rose Parade's 130-year tradition," said David Eads, executive director and CEO of the Tournament of Roses."Each year, tens of millions across America and around the world invite us into their homes to celebrate the New Year, and this year will be no different," he said. "We may not be able to make our typical 5.5-mile march, but we are hosting a spectacular celebration nonetheless."The Tournament of Roses will partner with Feeding America, the nation's largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a nationwide network of food banks."Food insecurity has been a focus of our organization's efforts during the pandemic, so it was only fitting that we extend our commitment to our re-imagined New Year celebration," said Bob Miller, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. "We are proud to work with Feeding America, an organization that is working to change lives in communities across the country."Food banks are feeding an average of 60% more people due to the pandemic's economic effects, said Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America."We are deeply grateful to the Tournament of Roses for helping to raise awareness and support for people facing hunger," she said. "Their generosity will help provide much needed meals for our most vulnerable neighbors."The show will air on ABC, the Hallmark Channel, KTLA, NBC, RFD-TV and Univision on Jan. 1 at 8 a.m. Details on the performance lineup, entertainment segments and celebrity appearances are yet to be announced.Talent will be filmed from various cities throughout the country, including Pasadena, and any new footage will meet COVID-19 safety protocols outlined by the State of California and the Pasadena Health Department, according to the Tournament of Roses."The Rose Parade is a longstanding and central part of our New Year celebrations -- not only here in Pasadena, but also around the world -- and we are delighted that tradition will continue this year in a new, reimagined way," said Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek. "We are excited to see how it comes to life on TV this year." 2963
