Several people are dead after a gunman opened fire near a downtown Dayton, Ohio entertainment district early Sunday morning.A few hours later, a crowd gathered around the scene of the mass shooting, looking at the bullet holes left behind.Anthony Hickson heard the gun shots and describes what happened next.“Everybody started bomb rushing and you knew something bad was going on,” he said. “People running over top of each other, because you could really only get out of one doorway.”Holding back his tears, Dayton local Christian Stargell said this shooting has shaken this community to its core.“The past couple of months have been real tough for Dayton, and I think we’ve seen how we can come together and handle it,” he said.Coming together in this time of need.“I’m doing this because I love Dayton and I want to do what's best for Dayton,” said Nicole Cornett of BIllie Gold Bubble Tea. On Sunday afternoon, Cornett parked her food truck a few blocks away from the shooting, saying she’s donating all the money she’s making to victims impacted by this shooting.“Dayton does nothing but lift you up and support you, and they do that to every business here in town,” she said. “It’s just really upsetting because people now are going to be afraid and they’re going to be afraid to come out.”This community, however, did not hide in fear. Rather, it filled the streets where this shooting happened.Hundreds of people came out Sunday night showing support during a candle light vigil saying Dayton can remember those who lost their lives and eventually survive this tragedy. 1589
So goes having home-field advantage? In a series which resulted in the road team winning every single game, the Washington Nationals won the winner-take-all Game 7 on Wednesday by defeating the Houston Astros 6-2. The Nationals won the series by a 4-3 margin. After Washington took the first two games played in Houston, Houston responded by winning Games 3, 4 and 5 in Washington, D.C. Facing elimination, the Nationals won Games 6 and 7 in Houston. The win marked the first ever World Series title in franchise history, including when the franchise was located in Montreal. The last time a Washington-based team won a World Series was 1924. After being sidelined with an injury for Sunday’s Game 5, Nationals’ All-Star starting pitcher Max Scherzer kept his club in Game 7 with a 5-inning, two-run effort. Then, Patrick Corbin, spurning his usual role as a starter, came out of the bullpen to hold the Astros scoreless for 3 innings. After Houston held a 2-0 lead through 6 innings, Washington responded with three runs in the 7th inning, including a Howie Kendrick home run, which gave the Nationals a 3-2 lead. In the 8th, Juan Soto singled to deliver a RBI which scored Adam Eaton. Eaton returned the favor in the 9th with a two-RBI single to center field to lift Washington to a more comfortable 6-2 lead. Though not pitching in Wednesday’s Game 7, pitcher Stephen Strasburg earned the win in two of Washington’s four World Series victories, including Tuesday’s pivotal Game 6. Strasburg was named the series' MVP."I don't know. It's almost like we've done it so many times that we have to get punched in the face to kind of wake up. I think it's just the MO. We don't quit. We never quit throughout the season despite kind of everybody saying that we were done," Straburg said. Coming into the season, despite being favored by some to win the National League East, the Nationals faced the adversity of losing 2015 MVP Bryce Harper to rival Philadelphia. Instead of winning the East, the Nationals entered the MLB Playoffs via a Wild Card. Washington gutted out a 4-3 win over Milwaukee in the Wild Card game. Then facing elimination twice in the Division Series, the Nationals won Game 4 6-1 before winning Game 5 in extra innings to win that series. Washington then went on to easily sweep the St. Louis Cardinals. "This year, I can honestly say nothing would have surprised me," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. "I mean, from where we started, traveling "boos," you name it, we've been through a lot."But like I said before, these guys, we stuck together. They believed in each other. I believed in them. And I told them before the game, I said, Hey, I want you guys to just treat this as just another game, it's Game 184, which is hard to do. I said, But we made it this far, just play one more game. One more 1-0, and they did that tonight." 2869

Residents were urged to shelter in place for several hours after an explosion and fire broke out Wednesday at a massive ExxonMobil plant in Texas, injuring 66 people, officials said. The injuries were non-life threatening, plant manager Jason Duncan told reporters. Most involved minor, first-degree-type burns, with the victims treated at a local clinic, he said. Most were ExxonMobil employees or contractors.City officials said via Twitter Wednesday afternoon that the shelter-in-place advisory had been lifted after monitoring failed to detect "any levels of concern" in the air. The fire had been contained by the evening."We realize the people who live here in Baytown and our surrounding communities are worried," Baytown spokeswoman Natasha Barrett told reporters. "We understand that and we've been working hour after hour to check on things, to monitor air quality."The fire occurred at the company's Baytown Olefins Plant, ExxonMobil spokeswoman Sarah Nordin said. The company website describes the complex as one of the largest refining and petrochemical complexes in the world. It's located about 25 miles east of Houston.Barrett said the fire began about 11:07 a.m. local time and the precautionary shelter-in-place was issued about 10 minutes later. The blaze is in a unit that contains polypropylene material and Exxon asked that the shelter-in-place order be issued west of the plant and south of the Texas Spur 330 freeway "out of an abundance of caution," the city of Baytown said via Twitter.Duncan said the fire broke out at a polypropylene recovery unit, where the plastic is purified for production. He said crews were working to shut down the units to isolate the fire source.Duncan said the company is conducting air quality monitoring at the site and fence line, and cooperating with regulatory agencies. He said no adverse environmental effects had been detected.Barrett said city and county officials were also monitoring the air.The cause of the explosion is unknown, he said. 2015
