SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Anti-Defamation League in San Diego announced a reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who reportedly shot at the Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro. According to the ADL, the temple became aware that the building had been struck by bullets in “recent days.” When exactly the building was targeted is unclear. The league says the bullet holes were discovered in a portion of the building not in use. San Diego Police are also investigating the incident, but the ADL says they don’t believe there is a “known continuing threat to Temple Emanu-El or other Jewish institutions in the area.”“ADL takes any report of violence against a religious institution extremely seriously, and will always commit our utmost effort and resources to securing justice for victims,” said Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director. “We hope that by offering this reward, someone with critical information for investigators will be motivated to speak out.“According to the ADL, 2018 saw a 27 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents throughout California. The league is offering a ,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division at 858-495-7900. 1280

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Teachers, grocery workers and police officers are among those slated to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the next phase, but there is still debate about how best to prioritize those industries during the rollout. After the vaccine reaches individuals in Phase 1A, frontline healthcare workers and people in nursing homes, a CDC advisory panel recommended Sunday that Phase 1B consist of people aged 75 and up and certain high-risk essential workers.About 30 million essential workers fall into this category. Ultimately, it will be up to states and local health departments to determine which of those essential workers get first access to the lifesaving vaccines.“I feel like we're on an organ transplant committee deciding who gets the liver and gets to survive. It's a tough decision,” said Dr. Christian Ramers, a member of San Diego County’s vaccine advisory group. There is particular focus on when to vaccinate teachers. Nevada’s preliminary plan is to put teachers and transit workers ahead of food and retail workers. On the other hand, Louisiana’s plan is to vaccinate prison guards and food processing workers before teachers.“I really hate that idea that we are pitted against other essential workers,” said California Teachers Association president Toby Boyd. There are health and economic considerations surrounding the timing of immunizations for teachers. On one hand, there’s broad agreement that in-person learning offers superior educational and emotional outcomes for children, along with significant child care benefits for families.“It’s going to help economically because it will allow parents to go back into the workforce without worrying about their child,” Boyd said.On the other hand, education can happen virtually while jobs like policing, firefighting and food processing cannot. There are also questions about the relative risk of transmission in a classroom compared to other work settings.“[In] a school environment, you can basically control the environment with your policies, with your air conditioning system, with mandatory masking,” said Dr. Ramers. He said other industries, such as food handling, present more risk.“We want to stick really to who has the highest risk of catching the disease because of the constant exposure, and then who has the highest risk of dying of the disease? Those are really the two main driving principles that we're trying to balance,” he said.A group of scientific advisers to Governor Gavin Newsom met Monday to discuss the vaccine priority schedule.Last week, the governor’s vaccine advisory group suggested three industries should be considered for priority within Phase 1B: emergency services workers, food and agriculture workers, and education and child care employees. The task force noted the following specific jobs. 2819

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego is one step closer to approving the 6.5M purchase of two hotels to permanently house homeless people living in the convention center. When the pandemic hit in March, the Bridge Shelters and Golden Hall were cleared out and about a thousand people were brought into the convention center, according to the mayor's office. The emergency setup allowed for proper social distancing, and resources to request PPE and other supplies. The convention center will be emptied in December to prepare to open for events when it is safe.Since the pandemic, downtown has looked different according to Marshall Anderson, Vice President of Government Affairs with the Downtown San Diego Partnership."I would encourage all of you to walk around downtown so you can see just about how safe and livable it is at the moment ... For too long has downtown acted as the region's homeless shelter. It's nice to see another neighborhood bearing some of the responsibility for sheltering some of our most vulnerable," he said. The city plans to buy two Residence Inn hotels, one in Kearney Mesa, the other in Mission Valley. Together the hotels could house about 400 people and support tenants who are accessing services for mental health and substance abuse issues.During the city's Public Safety and Livable Communities Committee Meeting Wednesday, Mission Valley neighbors voiced their complaints."It's a bad idea, I am absolutely opposed to this project," a man who has lived in Mission Valley for 30 years said."My real concern is obviously the safety of my community but also the safety of the potential residents ... I am just opposed to this idea because it doesn't seem practical for the city and I feel like it opens the city up to a lot of liability in terms of motorist versus pedestrian accidents," a woman living in the same neighborhood added. She is concerned there is not enough transit or pedestrian infrastructure in the area. The people who would move into the hotels, according to the mayor's office, are stable and already accessing services for mental health and substance abuse. The office added there are already similar units in the area. The committee passed the plan to purchase the hotels and the item will go before the full city council on Oct. 13. 2299
