(KGTV) - A dog owner has a warning for other pet owners after her 5-year-old English Bulldog died during a dental cleaning at a Vista pet hospital."I just thought it was a routine visit," said Kristine Ortiz.Ortiz's nightmare began two Tuesdays ago at Banfield Pet Hospital in Vista, after she brought Chesty in for a dental cleaning. Chesty is her emotional support dog. Ortiz, a medically retired Marine, lives with a rare and debilitating bone disease. Ortiz got the call just before 3 in the afternoon."Just in shock. Kept thinking this is not my dog. Has to be a different dog," said a tearful Ortiz. RELATED: Dog dies after suffering burns during surgeryIt wasn't. She was told Chesty was dead."I was upset. I remember screaming ... I've had surgery six times since I got my dog, and she's been with me the whole time, so it was very emotional," said Ortiz. Ortiz demanded an explanation."They told us he had an adverse reaction to the medicine and everything they were administering," said Ortiz.That didn't make sense to Ortiz. Chesty, a healthy dog, had been put under during two previous cleanings and never had any issues. She hired her own expert to conduct a necropsy and received a report, which concluded it was not an adverse reaction that killed Chesty, but a slow suffocation.RELATED: Beloved family dog attacked and killed at Santee dog park"The report says over a period of six hours, slowly his throat was closing," said Ortiz.Chesty's death is not the only one when it comes to Banfield and dental cleanings. An internet search shows complaints of deadly dental cases across the country. (KGTV) -- The San Diego District Attorney is expected to decide later this week whether there should be a new trial in the case of Kellen Winslow Junior.Tuesday morning, the judge declared a mistrial after the jury said it was deadlocked on eight remaining counts. The counts include kidnapping, forcible rape and forcible oral copulation involving a hitchhiker last year in Encinitas and forcible rape and rape of an unconscious person for an alleged attack on a teenager at a party in Scripps Ranch back in 2003 when she was 17 and Winslow was 19. The other counts the jury deadlocked on are willful cruelty to an elder and battery against an elder. The prosecutor said the jurors were leaning toward conviction. "On each one of the counts, there were a majority of jurors who voted in favor of guilt. They voted 10-2 in favor of guilt on forcible sodomy of Jane Doe 2. They voted 10-2 in favor of guilt for the forcible rape of Jane Doe 4. They voted 10-2 in favor of guilt on the counts of elder abuse and elder battery regarding Jane Doe 5 and then they voted 8-4 in favor of guilt on the rape of an unconscious person for Jane Doe 4 and they voted 7-5 in favor of guilt on the kidnap for rape, forcible oral copulation and and forcible rape of Jane Doe 1," said Prosecutor Dan Owens. Defense attorneys said the deadlocked jury shows there were credibility issues among the accusers. We took on all these cases at once and we still prevailed to the point that we did not get convicted of everything and we have more litigation to do," said Watkins. Monday afternoon, the jury convicted Winslow of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman in Encinitas last year. Jurors also found the former NFL tight end guilty of indecent exposure and lewd conduct involving two other women. He was acquitted of a second count of lewd conduct involving one of those women. Watkins said they'll appeal the three convictions. "We won't be satisfied until he's exonerated and he's back home with his family," said Watkins. He'd be facing an additional 6 months for each 1 of the misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure and lewd acts committed against Jane Does 3 and 5, for a total of potentially 9 years in prison," said Owens. Sentencing is on hold until a decision is made about a new trial. Winslow's father, Kellen Winslow Senior, a Chargers Hall of Famer attended every day of the trial, but declined to talk to the media. A hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday on setting a new trial. WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials have started two new studies to test various blood thinners to try to prevent strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and other complications in COVID-19 patients.Doctors increasingly are finding blood clots throughout the bodies of many people who died from COVID-19 along with signs of damage they do to kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, the heart and other organs.National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Director Gary Gibbons says that hospitals have been giving seriously ill patients anti-clotting drugs to try to prevent this, but “quite frankly, we didn’t know how best to treat it” in terms of which drugs or doses to use and at what stage of illness.The National Institutes of Health will coordinate a study in hospitalized patients comparing low and regular doses of the blood thinner heparin. The study will involve more than 100 sites around the world participating in a research effort with various governments, drug companies, universities and others to speed coronavirus therapies.A second study in COVID-19 patients not sick enough to need hospitalization will test various strategies against placebo pills: baby aspirin or low or regular doses of the anti-clotting drug apixaban, sold as Eliquis in the United States. The goal there is preventing blood clots or hospitalization.A third study starting later will test blood thinners for people who have recovered and no longer test positive for the coronavirus.
