CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. - They call themselves the "Cheekta-Vegas Griswolds." Year after year, Dan McPhee takes a week off work to put together an extravagant holiday display, filled with thousands of lights, Santas, and snowmen. It's all to bring a smile to those passing by - a smile that's needed more than ever in 2020."I mean I hope people enjoy it. I'm getting beeps from people who are driving by, beeping their horns showing support. It makes me feel good to see other people enjoying it as much as we do," McPhee said.Star 102.5 has aimed to bring some much needed Christmas spirit as well. For 20 years, the radio station has filled Western New York airwaves with holiday cheer."But this year we kind of thought we could go a little early in light of all the turmoil and things that were going on. Maybe we could just make someone's day," Sue O'Neil, the operations manager and on-air talent for Star 102.5, said.At 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1, Chris Kringle and Rudolf took over the airwaves. It's the earliest Star 102.5 has ever started playing Christmas songs."I think a distraction is needed because everybody is kind of waiting to pounce. Everybody is kind of at each other. We need to get back to letting people out in traffic and smiling and waving and helping people out in the store when they can't reach something and putting a smile on their faces and maybe this makes you happy and maybe it makes your day a little brighter," O'Neil said. While Star 102.5 is bringing Western New York holiday cheer to our ears, S and K Holiday Lighting is working to bring it to our eyes."It's kind of unusually busy. I think a lot more people are wanting to do things because of the crazy times that we're living in now," Bill Sahn, the owner of S and K Holiday Lighting, said.S and K Lighting are seeing double the amount of business than in years past. Sahn said strands of red and white are simply a way to lighten the mood."Of course it brightens everybody's day literally and emotionally. It just brings a smile to people's faces. They're Christmas lights. They're fun," Sahn said. This story was first reported by Olivia Proia at WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 2163
CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. -- There were no survivors from a plane crash Thursday night in Carroll County, according to Indiana State Police. The Cessna 441 went down around 7:30 p.m. local time in a field near Carroll County Roads 500 West and 600 South, just north of Rossville. The plane took off from Eagle Creek Airport in Indianapolis at 7:21 p.m., according to flight records. It was headed to Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay, Wisconsin. At 7:39 p.m., data shows that the plane was between 18,000 feet and 28,000 feet when it disappeared off radar, sources told Scripps station WRTV in Indianapolis. Shortly after, multiple people called 911 in Carroll County, reporting a plane down. People who live in the area who heard the crash say it sounded like thunder.First responders had trouble finding the wreckage at first because it was so dark and far back in a field. They eventually used ATVs and other off-road vehicles to access the area. WRTV learned that there were at least three people on board. There is no word on what caused the plane to go down. Officials with the FAA and NTSB are expected to arrive on the scene Friday morning to begin their investigation. 1275

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago's Second City comedy theater is up for sale. The sale, announced Tuesday, is the second in the company's 60-year history. In a statement released by investment banker Houlihan Lokey, co-owner Andrew Alexander said a sale presents the opportunity for Second City to continue to succeed well into the future. Second City suspended all its shows and classes in early March due to the COVID-19 pandemic until further notice. Second City faced controversy in June when Alexander stepped down from the training and performance troupe due to allegations of racism within the company. Second City was an early training ground for "Saturday Night Live" players including John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and Chris Redd. 749

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A newly discovered comet is streaking past Earth, providing a stunning nighttime show after buzzing the sun and expanding its tail.Comet Neowise was spotted by the NASA space telescope bearing that name in March.Since then, the comet — called comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE— has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, observatories, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The celestial snowball swept within Mercury's orbit a week ago. Its close proximity to the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris tail.NASA says the comet is about 3 miles across. "From its infrared signature, we can tell that it is about 5 kilometers [3 miles] across, and by combining the infrared data with visible-light images, we can tell that the comet's nucleus is covered with sooty, dark particles left over from its formation near the birth of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago," said Joseph Masiero, NEOWISE deputy principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The comet will be visible across the Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it heads back toward the outer solar system.People wishing to catch a glimpse of the glowing comet can spot it as it swings through the inner solar system, but its nearness to the Sun creates some observing challenges. As it speeds away from the Sun, NASA says the comet will begin to make its appearance in the evening sky shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12, depending on local conditions.“Observers might be able to see the comet's central core, or nucleus, with the naked eye in dark skies; using binoculars will give viewers a good look at the fuzzy comet and its long, streaky tail,” said NASA. 1759
