BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) are forging a reliable partnership as one's stability, growth and prosperity are in the interests of the other, said an EU envoy on Thursday.Serge Abou, EU Ambassador to China, made the remarks before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM8) and the 13th China-EU summit from Oct. 4 to 6. This year, China-EU trade has witnessed remarkable growth and bilateral trade volume exceeded 300 billion U.S. dollars for the first eight months, up 36.2 percent compared with the same period last year.However, Abou was not satisfied with the figures. Trade and investment are not big enough considering China's 1.3-billion population, said the ambassador. He looks forward to more cooperation between the two countries in agriculture among other sectors."We welcome Chinese rise and Chinese prosperity," said Abou, adding that the EU would like to be more "engaged" in China's growth.Besides, China and the EU are also cooperating in energy, climate change and higher education, said the envoy.There are 200,000 Chinese students in Europe and tourists to European countries are also increasing, he added."The Chinese language is the second foreign language studied in my country France in secondary schools, just after English," said the EU official, adding that, by contrast, it was very "exotic" to learn Chinese when he was young."That means we have a solid basis to deepen our relationship," he added.

HANOI, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue accused Japanese representatives here Friday of violating China's sovereignty and territorial integrity through statements to the media during the summit meetings between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners.The Japanese side also made untrue statements about the content of a meeting between Chinese and Japanese foreign ministers held earlier in the day, he said.Hu said the Japanese move ruined the atmosphere for leaders from the two sides to conduct talks in the Vietnamese capital.The Japanese side should take full responsibility for any consequence to arise, the Chinese diplomat said.It was known to all that China had always tried to preserve and push forward bilateral relations between China and Japan on the basis of the principles set out in the four political documents signed by the two countries, Hu said.However, the truth was that the diplomatic authority of Japan, in cahoots with other nations, tried to create noises on the issue of the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea in the lead-up to the summits between ASEAN and its partners. BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's safety record has improved in the first nine months of 2010 with fewer accidents and deaths compared with one year ago, Luo Lin, director of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS), said Wednesday.From January to September this year, China reported 16,091 fewer accidents, or a decline of 5.8 percent over the previous year, while deaths caused by accidents were down by 5,869 in the same period, Luo said during a a national video conference regarding the country's work safety record.While Luo did not provide the actual figures of accidents or deaths caused during this period, he said: "Though we have made new progress in work safety, the total number of accidents is still too high and the accidents with heavy casualties and caused by illegal production activities were rising dramatically."According to SAWS, China's work safety death ratio per 100 million yuan (14.9 million U.S. dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) was down 18.6 percent year on year to 0.21 during the January-September period. In other words, every 10 billion yuan of China's GDP will cause 21 deaths in the process of production.In addition, the death ratio per million tonne of coal output dropped 13.3 percent to 0.78 in the same period.According to the last figures released by SAWS in July, workplace accidents had killed 33,876 people in the first half of this year.
