SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As more people grow weary of the coronavirus pandemic, the race is on to get more test kits in the hands of medical professionals. Sorrento Valley's Hologic Diagnostic Solutions is making a big dent in the test kit shortage. Staying at home and away from others is Gov, Gavin Newsom's hope to curb the spread of COVID-19. But that does not curb fear. Many San Diegans still wish to get tested, but health officials say there just isn't enough. "There is a shortage of kits.”Since the Chinese government released the COVID-19 genetic sequencing on Jan. 8, 2020, medical diagnostics companies have been working around the clock to invent a new, efficient test. One of those is Hologic Diagnostic Solutions in Sorrento Valley. "We started doing exploratory science to figure out, what is the virus, and what can we do to help?" SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A troubled spot in Lincoln Park is getting a new look. The community came together to clean up the site.The intersection of Euclid and Imperial Avenues was once known as the "Four Corners of Death" because of the high crime, gang activity, and homelessness. Now the area is getting some long-overdue attention."I remember when that area was bustling with businesses and commerce," says Brian Pollard, President of the Urban Collaborative Project.Since 2017, the Urban Collaborative Project has been working with community members, the city, and county to clean up the area and find help for those living on the streets.Brian Pollard says there has been an increase in affordable housing in the area, but resources like healthcare and food are still limited."We're putting more people in here but not increasing the services that are needed to support these affordable housing units. Food is a very big issue."The group's first significant project was bringing the Food 4 Less, located in Market Creek Plaza, to Southeast San Diego years ago. This part of town has virtually no major grocery stores."Until we start acknowledging that and pumping resources and shifting priorities, we will never catch up," says Pollard.UCP hopes to redevelop the Lincoln Park area, near Euclid and Imperial Avenues, to see it thrive as it did years ago, inviting businesses to invest in the process.The group is planning a community clean up in the coming weeks to beautify the area. 1491

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Underwater robots showcased difficult tasks and the teams in charge of the technology are hoping to take the crown for the 21st International Robosub Competition in Point Loma.A total of 47 teams from 10 different countries came together with one mission, navigate their robots through a tricky underwater course."We have mechanical, electrical, and computer science, and it's all coming together to make one cohesive vehicle,” said David Garcia, one of the team members from Cal State.Students were able to check out each other’s models to learn what sinks and what swims. For those who think the competition is all fun and games, meet Chinoros Nakthewan from Kasetsart University in Bangkok.His team was part of the Thai cave rescue effort. At the time, they determined that his robot wouldn’t be able to reach the survivors, so they resorted to using their other equipment."We made a decision to bring sonar and drone to observe the high level of the cave,” said Nakthewan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While bars are set to open Friday, it's not going to look much different from restaurants right now, according to those in the industry.10News spoke with Nathan Colonero, the Director of Operations at Sandbox Pizza and The Tipsy Crow, and he said the only change will be businesses without a food license will be able to reopen and bars that serve food don't have to enforce a food order on each tab.Customers will be required to wear masks when they walk in and may only remove their mask once seated.Tables must be spaced at least six feet apart or partitioned.Colonero is hopeful the easing restrictions will continue, "who knows? Maybe three more weeks and no spike and we get a little more back to, the biggest thing for us is to get back to, if people are allowed to be in the venue, maybe at a lower capacity, just not seated."Many San Diego bars with food licenses have been open for the past three weeks and some are feeling the squeeze of the new restrictions."The 0 unemployment is killing businesses right now to get staff back," Colonero said. He said they're dealing with high minimum wage, former employees who left the area to live with their family during quarantine and those who are afraid to return to work for health reasons.He said another problem with hiring back employees is they have new cleaning duties under the county order, "everyone's kind of been forced to do jobs they don't like or want to do."Colonero said servers and bartenders coming back are also seeing less in tips, because of the limited capacity, and businesses are seeing hardly if any profit for the same reason."Unfortunately there's going to be a lot of restaurants and bars that aren't going to be reopening," Colonero said.He asks San Diegans who go out this weekend to bars and restaurants to be patient with workers who are juggling so many changes.Bars join nearly a dozen other businesses allowed to reopen Friday:GymsHotelsBars/wineriesZoos and indoor museumsFamily entertainment facilities (bowling alleys, batting cages, etc.)Day campsCampgroundsPro sports without fansFilm and TV productionCard rooms 2137

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  As the San Diego Airport plans a Billion expansion to Terminal 1, concerns over how to get people to and from Lindbergh Field are creating problems for the project."We are the first and last impression people have of San Diego," says Dennis Probst, the Airport VP of Development. "We want to make it a good one."The airport served a record 22 million passengers in 2017. They expect that number to grow to 28 million by 2035.  Getting all of those people to and from Lindbergh is a big part of the expansion.Plans put forward by the airport call for a new three lane roadway connecting Harbor Drive to Lindbergh. It would start near Laurel Street and take people directly to the new terminal and proposed parking garage."No stop lights, no stop signs, free-flowing," says Probst. "It's gonna take about 45,000 cars a day off Harbor Drive."But other San Diego agencies say the airport needs to think bigger and focus on different modes of transportation, instead of just cars."Connecting the airport to transit is something we've been talking about for a long, long time," says Rafael Castellanos, the Chair of the Port of San Diego. "If San Diego wants to be a world class city, we need to have world-class infrastructure."The Port owns the land that the airport sits on. They've proposed a light rail-style people mover that would connect trolley stations nearby to the terminal.Meanwhile, SANDAG and the County of San Diego released a study proposing a skyway with gondola rides that could run from the Convention Center to the Airport."I think the only obstacle is getting everyone to the table quickly," says Castellanos. "That's something that can be easily overcome."The airport says they're willing to look at all options, but they can't take a stand or incorporate any into their current plans because they can only control what happens on airport property."The view from the airport's side is that we're not the region's transit planning agency," says Probst.Funding is also an issue. The expansion project will only use FAA and airport-generated money. Because of that, FAA rules say they can only spend money to improve things at the airport or directly related to the airport. A tram or skyway that spans all of Harbor Drive would require an exception to that rule and would need money from other agencies as well.Probst says the airport has already started talking to the FAA about that option. They got a similar exception to help with infrastructure improvements when the airport built the rental car center a few years back.Right now, the airport is reviewing comments from their Environmental Impact Report. The next step is to put together environmental quality reports for the state and the federal government. Probst says the debate over transit is slowing down the process, to the point where he doesn't think they'll be able to start construction until after 2020. 2932
