Fed up with limited leg room onboard airline cabins?Italian seat manufacturer Aviointeriors has come up with a design that allows passengers to stretch their legs as much as they want when they travel without any extra cost.The catch? The seats are so far upright that they'll be pretty much standing up.Unveiled at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2018 in Hamburg, the SkyRider 2.0 aims to help airlines squeeze in more passengers by allowing an "ultra-high density" and reducing the space between rows.It's a new and improved version of a design the manufacturer revealed in 2010 but failed to get off the ground.The original Skyrider, which was was not approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration, was designed in the style of a horse saddle.Aviointeriors compared the seating position to that of a horseback rider, pointing out that cowboys can sit on saddles for hours without feeling uncomfortable.Stand up idea?The revised seats have extra padding, as well as poles to connect each row from the ceiling to the cabin floor.According to Aviointeriors, the SkyRider 2.0 "ensures an increased upright passenger position, allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort."While it remains to be seen whether Aviointeriors' definition of "adequate comfort" matches the average person's, the company stresses that the seats, designed for short haul flights, have many benefits."The design of this seat enables to increase the passenger number by 20% allowing increasing profits for airline companies," says a spokesperson for Aviointeriors."Furthermore, Sky Rider 2.0 weighs 50% less than standard economy class seats and the reduced number of components enable minimum maintenance costs."Will it take off?The concept of vertical seats has been floating around for nearly two decades.Airbus proposed the idea of standing room flights as early as 2003 and in 2010, Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary announced that he was considering introducing special standing-room only areas of his airplanes.But the airline seems to have abandoned the idea for the time being."We have no plans to trial or introduce standing flights," a spokesperson told CNN last year.While Aviointeriors has dubbed the Skyrider 2.0 "the new frontier of low cost tickets and passenger experience," aircraft specialists have pointed out various stumbling blocks ranging from potential evacuation delays due to limited space and the fact that there is no room under the seats for personal items.The innovative seat is yet to be snapped up by an airline.   2592

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) – An Escondido couple is out thousands of dollars after falling for a sophisticated truck scam“You hear about it everywhere, but you’re like it’s not going to happen to me,” Terha Newby said.   Terha and her husband, Chris, found the perfect truck for sale on Craigslist back in September. Someone from El Monte was selling a Chevy Silverado 2600 HD for about ,000. “The registration matches the pink slip, the VIN, everything. You’re like, 'Its good!'” Terha said.  But it was far from good.It turns out the truck was stolen out of Orange County last year. Afterwards, someone replaced the VINs on the truck with a duplicate VIN of a truck that someone owns in Texas. They even had matching paperwork to go with it. But the VINs set off an alarm for the DMV when the Newbys went to get their new truck registered.“The VIN that was in the vehicle belonged to truck in Texas, and it was on a lien,” Terha said. “These guys are professionals, they’re out there, and that’s all they do for a living.”Chris said the seller gave them a Carfax report, but it was a fake one. He now regrets not getting their own. “From now on, for a fee, Carfax would have prevented it,” Chris said.The stolen Silverado was impounded and went back to the insurance company of the truck’s original owner. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A popular Encinitas cafe was destroyed and nearby residences were evacuated following a blaze early Monday morning.Crews were called around 12:15 a.m. to a commercial building fire at 698 N Coast Highway 101, about three blocks from the coastline.Witnesses reported hearing an explosion then seeing the building fully engulfed almost instantly. "I heard a really loud pop and then I heard some yelling," said Matt Prior, a nearby resident. He thought the noise was gunfire until he realized the popular Mozy Cafe was engulfed in flames."I went outside and saw like a really big orange glow," said Prior.Flames were still raging an hour after the first units arrived. More firefighting units were called to the scene and crews evacuated nearby residential buildings.No injuries were reported.In total, Mozy Cafe and three other businesses resided in the destroyed commercial building. Firefighters remained on the scene as of 6 a.m. to monitor hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation but officials say it does not seem suspicious.The owners of the four businesses say they want to rebuild and have created a GoFundMe to raise money. 1185

(KGTV) -- The return to in-person instruction for some north county students appears to be in legal limbo.Friday, the California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the union representing the teachers in the San Dieguito Union High School District. The union wants the district's reopening plan blocked, saying, among other things, it violates the state's public health rules concerning the pandemic.Last Tuesday, the school board voted to give students the option of returning to in-person instruction five days a week on January 27th. Previously, the board voted to return to campus one day a week beginning January 4th.Lori Laroque has two boys in eighth grade at Pacific Trails Middle School. She applauds the board's decision."I was elated, and this was something that should have happened a long time ago," said Laroque.Ann Cerny has been teaching U.S History at Earl Warren Middle School for twenty-seven years. She also has a high school daughter in the district.Cerny says she would love to see kids return to campus, but she says now is not the time."Yes, in-person learning is best, but it's not going to be that 2019 in-person situation, and people aren't seeming to accept that reality," said Cerny, who has been teaching remotely from her classroom.Union leaders estimate up to 20% of teachers won't return if the plan for five days a week in-person instruction goes through.Cerny says she has concerns about exposure to COVID-19, but that isn't her biggest fear."It's the academic chaos that we find ourselves heading towards. I'm just worried that it's not going to roll out well. I'm worried for equity for students. I'm worried for the many, many teachers going out on leave and having subs for classes," said Cerny.The school board president said the district is actively recruiting for teachers and substitutes.No one from the board was available to comment on camera, but President Maureen Muir sent 10News a lengthy statement explaining the reopening plan."The health and safety of our students and staff is the District's highest priority. The District's Safe Reopening Plan follows the guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health and includes detailed protocols for distancing and ventilation.Staff will be encouraged to maintain 6 feet of distancing, as practical, from one another at all times, and teacher desks will be at least six feet away from students. Students will maintain distancing as practicable and in compliance with guidance from CDPH, including arranging desks in a manner that minimizes face-to-face contact. We have evaluated all of our classroom spaces and planned to maximize distancing. We have also planned carefully to maximize distancing for students and staff outside of our classrooms, including before, after, and between classes.The District consulted with ventilation and filtration experts to determine the maximum efficiency our units can handle. MERV 8+ filters were installed in all of our units, which achieves MERV 11 efficiency. Additionally, we purchased and installed HEPA filters in our classrooms, common areas, and offices. We have CO2 sensors in our newer buildings that monitor indoor air quality and we are purchasing more for other spaces.To ensure the continuity of teaching and learning, the District is allowing teachers who are in a high-risk group, or who have a household member in a high-risk group, to teach from home for the remainder of the second quarter, which ends on January 22, 2021.We have also informed teachers who have childcare needs due to COVID-19 that they may also work from home during this same time period. The District has made every effort to work with our teachers to keep them safe and to address their concerns about returning to work. Federal authorities say a U.S. airman with ties to the "boogaloo" right-wing extremist movement killed a federal security officer outside a federal courthouse near San Francisco. Air Force Staff Sgt. Steven Carrillo was charged Tuesday with murdering federal officer David Patrick Underwood and attempted murder of another officer during a night of violent protests in Oakland on May 29. Carrillo separately faces state charges in the fatal shooting and ambush of a Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy and the wounding of four other officers on June 6.
