DETROIT — "They strictly thought their so-called white privilege was gonna work this time and it didn't," said Marc Peeples who was acquitted in a directed verdict in a case where three women, who are white, accused Peeples, who is black, of stalking them. The women repeatedly called Detroit Police on Peeples, an urban farmer, who said he wanted to grow a garden in his old neighborhood in the area of 8 Mile and John R on the city's east side. In the beginning, Peeples said one of the women donated soil to his project, but then he and his attorney say it became about power, race and false allegations."These women were clearly lying," said Peeples who was shocked when Detroit Police arrested him after prosecutors charged him with three misdemeanor counts of stalking. This was a case of "gardening while black" said defense attorney Robert Burton-Harris, who represented Peeples at trial.Harris said this is similar to other cases around the country where "you have people calling the police on, mostly,?African-Americans for doing very mundane things.""I wasn't doing anything but planting a seed to help my community grow," said Peeples. 36th District Court Judge E. Lynise Bryant told WXYZ that the women filed false police reports and made up allegations that Peeples had been convicted of being a pedophile and that he had a gun. "I very much believed that the only reason that they called the police on Mr. Peeples being in their neighborhood was because of his race," said Judge Bryant. "It was clearly, in my opinion, that these ladies had engaged in not only harassment of Mr. Peeples but illegal conduct towards Mr. Peeples."But a friend of one of the women told WXYZ that the only reason for the acquittal is that the assistant prosecutor handling the case was poorly prepared. "You think she moved into this neighborhood to be called a racist," he said about his friend who declined an interview.WXYZ has not been able to reach the other two women for comment.A spokesperson for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office released the following statement: 2155

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - This weekend 47 teams from high schools around San Diego and other parts of the US will compete in the FIRST California Robotics Regional Championships. The event brings the teens together to test their engineering and science skills. The teams get six weeks to design and build a robot to complete a handful of tasks. But the technology isn't cheap, so many teams turn to local tech companies for donations.San Diego based tech-giant Qualcomm is the title sponsor of the competition. They also give money to individual teams. Organizers say the companies see it as a way to excite teens about careers in STEM."They look at this as their future workforce," says Regional Director David Berggren. "If we can get these kids invested in STEM fields now, they're going to be great future employees, and it's money well spent for the company."The actual dollar amounts aren't given, but some schools say companies donate thousands of dollars each year. Logos on t-shirts and team booths show companies like Apple, Qualcomm, Viasat, 3M, Solar Turbines, BAE Systems, leidos and more have made donations. In addition to the money, companies donate time, providing volunteers to mentor the teens through the design and building process. They work hands on with the teams, giving kids an up close look at careers in STEM fields."It's eye-opening, it's surreal," says Southwest High School Senior Alejandro Gendrop. "To not only have someone aid us with how we're supposed to organize our team, put it together, but also to get a view into the industry and how they work and how similar our work is to theirs, it's great."The competition in Del Mar is Friday and Saturday, and admission is free. Winners from this weekend advance to the national championship in Houston next month. For more information, go to http://casd.cafirst.org. 1853

Darrell Issa is standing by a new ad about Carl DeMaio that the chair of the San Diego Republican party called "highly inappropriate." The ad uses imagery of MS-13 and uses headlines with the word "Gay" to describe DeMaio. DENVER, Colo. — Broncos CEO Joe Ellis and General Manager John Elway have tested positive for COVID-19 as the virus continues to hit the organization hard.Ellis woke up not feeling well last Sunday and missed his first Broncos home game in 26 years, watching from home as a precaution. Elway began experiencing symptoms on Monday, alerted the medical staff, and left UCHealth Training Center immediately. Elway and Ellis learned of their test results on Tuesday morning. They are feeling well, other than minor symptoms, the team said. Statement from the Broncos: pic.twitter.com/PPYuJQedZN— Denver Broncos (@Broncos) November 3, 2020 The Broncos have gone through contact tracing and determined that Ellis and Elway's cases were independent of one another. They believe both cases originated outside the building. According to the team, there were minimal close contacts identified for each and none included coaches or players. Those in close contact have been notified.Ellis and Elway have been tested daily since training camp began in August. The Broncos have experienced a rash of positive tests beginning 17 days ago with running backs coach Curtis Modkins, which placed the team in intensive protocols that they have not lifted. Those protocols include virtual meetings and mask-wearing for players on the field when helmets are off. Modkins has returned to work. However, defensive coordinator Ed Donatell, offensive line coach Mike Munchak and starting right guard Graham Glasgow have been isolated because of COVID-19. The organization has also had multiple staff employees test positive.During a Tuesday conference call, Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL's Chief Medical Officer, called the several positive cases for the Broncos "certainly a concerning situation for us." The league has maintained contact with the Broncos over the last two-plus weeks, saying Denver has cooperated and "done an excellent job" with its intensive protocols, which they have remained in since Modkins' positive test."At this point, we feel there’s not ongoing transmission among the players," Sills said.Broncos coaches are working remotely today as they begin game preparations for Sunday's game at Atlanta. The next few days will be important for Broncos because of travel and being in close quarters on the airplane. If a player is not feeling well -- even without a positive test -- he is not allowed to travel. So being healthy as of Saturday is critical. This story was first reported by Troy Renck at KMGH in Denver, Colorado. 2537

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Detroit Police Department is responding to a video that shows an officer fatally shooting a dog in its own yard.Officers say it happened Aug. 3 on the east side of the Michigan city. The video shows the dog in a yard latching onto a police K-9's snout and not letting go. The officer then drew her weapon and shot the dog, which died from its injuries."It's unfortunate that it came to this. We do not like to see any animal hurt, especially these K-9 officers. They are truly dog lovers and champions for K-9s. But at this point, her dog was being severely injured and had no choice," Commander Darin Szilagy said.Detroit police did internally investigate and cleared the officer of any wrongdoing. That K-9 officer continues to be evaluated and treated for injuries. DPD will conduct further testing to see if the K-9 is suitable to continue serving. This story was originally published by staff at WXYZ. 933
