The next few weeks mark the beginning of serious financial uncertainty for millions of people, because a slew of debt, from income tax payments to several months of rent, are going to be due at the same time. “It is going to be a perfect storm of financial difficulty for many, many people,” said Andrea Bopp Stark, an attorney at the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC).The center recommends three steps for anyone that finds themselves in a financially difficult situation regarding debt.Step one: create a list of priority bills and debt to pay off. “People are going to be barraged with debt collectors calling and trying to get them to pay on a medical debt or a credit card debt, but those debts are less important,” said Stark. “Pay debts that if you didn’t pay them it would cause immediate harm to your family.”Those are things like your rent and a car payment, especially if you need your car to go to work.“If you have a judgment against you, a court judgment against you for a debt, it is important to try and make a payment plan to pay that because creditor could issue a garnishment against your wages,” Stark added. Step two: contact your lender to make a payment plan on those priority debts.“We are seeing data come in that there are people who are delinquent and don’t have a forbearance agreement when they could very easily be in a forbearance agreement,” Stark added. “I know wait times on the phone are horrible right now, but you have to be persistent and get through and find out what help is available.”Data collected by the U.S. Census shows that delinquency rates are higher in communities of color.“It is mostly Black and Latinx borrowers who are not getting these forbearance agreements,” said Stark. “Whether they don’t know about it or nobody is reaching out to them to let them know this is available, we don’t know why but that is a population that is going to be disparately impacted and has already been disparately impacted by this whole crisis.”Step three: find a way to stick to your prioritized debt list. “It may sound obvious but if you have it on paper and you have created a budget, stick that to the refrigerator or wherever, then you know these are the priority spending items,” said Stark. “If your son or daughter say, ‘Oh, I want this or that,' ‘no, look at the fridge these are our priority spending items, sorry.’” Because every situation may not be solved in three steps, the NCLC has now made its in-depth guide to Surviving Debt available for free. It has template letters to send to debt collectors and hundreds of pages of help to get you through this tough time. 2626
The owner of a company that builds 3D-printed guns said he has begun selling blueprints of the weapons to elude a court order on Monday that banned him from giving the plans away for free.Cody Wilson, the founder of Defense Distributed, said that he interpreted Monday's federal court order to mean that he could not put gun blueprints online to be downloaded for free. Instead, he said, he is now selling the blueprints to customers, letting them name their own price and then emailing or shipping it to them."Anyone who wants these files is going to get them. I'm gonna sell it to them, I'm gonna ship them. That began this morning," Wilson said. "That will never be interrupted. The free exchange of these ideas will never be interrupted." 750

The political and judicial world were turned upside down on Friday following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. While many questions remain in Washington, like whether President Donald Trump has the votes to replace Ginsburg before the election, one thing is clear: issues will come before the Supreme Court very soon.HEALTH CARE ARGUMENTS IN NOVEMBERWhile election issues are expected, the future of the Affordable Care Act is an issue guaranteed to come up before the Supreme Court soon. A hearing is set to take place one week after the election regarding whether the law can be struck down. Essentially, Republicans from around the country believe that the only reason the Supreme Court upheld the law in 2012 was because the opinion said Congress has the power to tax. Since that time, however, Trump has removed the tax penalty for not having health insurance. The thinking from some conservatives is that since the tax penalty is gone, the entire law can be struck down now, too. WHERE THE COURT STANDS Prior to Ginsburg's death, the general thinking was that the law would still stand. It faced a challenged in 2012, but Chief Justice John Roberts sided with four liberal justices to uphold it. With Ginsburg's passing, there are only three liberal justices on the court. If Roberts joins the liberal justices it would create a 4-4 tie. "If there is a 4-4 split on the court, then no precedent is set and whatever the lower court decided stands," Professor Paul Schiff Berman with George Washington University said. That would mean parts of the Affordable Care Act can be struck down since lower courts have already ruled in that way. If Trump is able to get another nominee on the court before the hearing, it would only make the court more conservative. Berman cautioned though that other conservatives could potentially join the liberals on this case since the lawsuit's legal standing is murky. Still, the future of the Affordable Care Act is in more jeopardy today than it was last Thursday. 2020

Andrew Cuomo shared the video on Twitter Monday night, calling the gathering and lack of social distancing “egregious.”“I am appalled,” the governor said. “We have no tolerance for the illegal [and] reckless endangerment of public health.”The governor called on the event's "gross violations of not only the health rules, it was a gross violation of common sense. The state is conducting a full investigation into why the town issued a permit for the event. The crowd was reportedly attending a Chainsmokers concert in Southampton on Saturday that was billed as a “drive-in” event, although dozens of people could be seen standing in front of the stage. The investigation comes amid a state-level crackdown on social distancing violations, mainly focused on bars and restaurants, in an attempt to keep New York's coronavirus numbers down.Over 130 violations were issued to establishments in New York City and on Long Island from Friday through Sunday, according to Cuomo. Forty establishments have had their licenses suspended by the State Liquor Authority because of repeated social distancing violations.WPIX's Lauren Cook first reported this story. 1372
