BALTIMORE - Food safety experts are warning parents to be mindful when packing perishables like sandwiches and yogurts in your child's lunch.Tanya Brown with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said you're looking at a two-hour window before those brown bag lunches become breeding grounds for bacteria.“You should not put perishable items like bologna sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, cheese or yogurt in a brown paper bag and send a child to school with it,” Brown said.Foods can hit the "danger zone," or temperatures between 40-140 degrees Fahrenheit, when it’s left out of refrigeration over two hours. After four hours, the food item should be tossed.“You want to make sure you put them in an insulated lunch bag with at least two cold sources and those two cold sources could be a frozen water bottle or frozen juice packs or gel packs in there. So, you want to put those perishable items in there and make sure the child does not open the bag and keep opening and closing the bag before lunchtime,” said Brown.If you're sending them with something hot, use a thermos, and warm it up first.“The best way to prepare it is to pour boiling hot water into the thermos first, then discard the hot water and then put the hot soup or stew in there. Make sure it's at 165 degrees Fahrenheit,” Brown said.However, the leading cause of sickness is poor hand washing. Brown said this is an easy problem to solve:“Oftentimes, children don't get an opportunity to wash their hands before they go to lunch and just to trigger their memory put a moist toilette in there or some hand sanitizer to remind them before they start to eat their lunch,” she said.Click here for more information on the danger zone and safe handling of food. 1751

ATLANTA (AP) — A representative for Tyler Perry says the filmmaker and actor offered to pay the funeral expenses for an 8-year-old girl who was fatally shot in Atlanta. Secoriea Turner was shot while riding in a Jeep Cherokee with her mother and another adult on Saturday night. The shooting occurred near a fast-food restaurant where a Black man, Rayshard Brooks, was killed by a white police officer on June 12. The Wendy's restaurant was later burned, and the area has seen frequent demonstrations against police brutality since. Perry paid for Brooks' funeral last month. AURORA, Colo. — Three Aurora police officers under investigation for a photograph taken near the site where Elijah McClain struggled with officers were seen in the picture imitating the carotid hold used on McClain by police before the 23-year-old Black man died last August, two sources with knowledge of the situation told KMGH on Tuesday.Neither source had personally seen the photograph of the officers as of Tuesday afternoon, though they were aware of what the photograph showed.Aurora Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson on Monday night announced the officers were being investigated for a photograph but declined to say what the photograph showed.Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman on Tuesday tweeted that he was "deeply concerned over the facts surrounding the photographs," but Coffman also did not detail what was shown in the photographs.The officers were notified of their disciplines on Tuesday morning, the sources told KMGH, but the punishments were not yet public. Officers have a three-day period to appeal the discipline, the sources said.The picture depicting the involved officers was sent in a group text to other officers before it was reported to police officials, the sources said.Earlier Tuesday, Aurora police spokesperson Officer Matthew Longshore said the photos were reported to the department by a fellow Aurora officer, which the sources said occurred last Thursday. He said the police chief review board – comprised of the department’s three division chiefs and the deputy police chief – were reviewing the photos and will make a decision on whether, or how to, punish the officers.Longshore said that the officers could potentially be terminated depending on the review board’s decision.
