Five transgender members of the United States military testified in front of Congress on Wednesday, the first to do so publicly.Army Capt. Alivia Stehlik, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Blake Dremann, Army Capt. Jennifer Peace, Army Staff Sgt. Patricia King and Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Akira Wyatt all testified in front of the House Armed Services Committee, according to the Washington Post.All five testified that they were able to do their jobs effectively after transitioning. Some testified that their fellow soldiers were comfortable with their transition, and their transition even allowed others to open up to them.“They talked to me and told me things they never would have before,” Stehlik said. “Things they said they’ve never told other people. I asked them why, and the consistent answer is that they valued my authenticity — my courage in being myself. It allowed them to do the same thing.”The Obama administration repealed a ban on transgender persons in the military in 2016, allowing active military members to serve openly as transgender for the first time in decades. But in 2017, President Trump abruptly changed the policy in a series of tweets. While a number of lawsuits have been filed and are ongoing, the Supreme Court recently ruled to lift an injunction in some cases, keeping the ban in place. The five military members testified that they all sought medical treatments as part of their transition that prevented them from deploying, but all said they were able to do so by taking personal leave in between deployments.Rep. Jackie Speier (D-California), who called the meeting, was among the representatives to file a bill that would allow transgender service members to serve openly earlier this month. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A boy in Kent County, Michigan, brought his entire class with him Thursday morning as he received a gift just in time for the holidays: a forever home.Five-year-old Michael Orlando Clark Jr. wanted all his friends to see the moment he was officially adopted, so he brought them to 17th Circuit Court to cheer him on.His parents, Andrea Melvin and David Eaton, knew Michael was the right fit for their family after fostering."He brings us a lot of joy,” Melvin said. “He's just so full of energy and so full of love, it's just been great for everybody.”There was no shortage of love around them in the courtroom."It is a great tribute to Michael that he had so many of his classmates here and so many said he was their best friend too,” Michigan Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman said.Judge Patricia Gardner said she had never experience something like that before.“Never have I experienced that before, and it was loads of fun, the kids were into it and supporting their best friend, and the family of Michael,” she said.After Thursday’s ceremony, Eaton said he hopes other families get to share the inspiring experience his has gone through.Thirty-six other kids were also adopted Thursday as part of the 23rd annual adoption day in Kent County. 1284

Hubert Minnis, the prime minister of the Bahamas, confirmed Monday that at least five people have been killed due to Hurricane Dorian.According to Minnis, all five casualties occurred in Abaco, a series of islands in the northeast portion of the country.Abaco was among the first portions of the country to be hit when Dorian made landfall late Sunday.
