BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), on Sunday night called for more quality shows from private arts troupes to contribute to the development and the prospering of the country's socialist culture.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks after watching a Shaoxing opera that ended the three-week show season by China's private arts troupes in Beijing.Shaoxing opera is a traditional Chinese local opera originating in east China's Zhejiang Province.Li stressed that privately-owned arts troupes can survive only when their plays satisfy the market and the public.He said he hoped private arts troupes would produce more competitive shows with a positive and healthy theme and grow stronger by winning public support.Private arts troupes must be treated equally in terms of professional evaluation, social security coverage and support of artistic creation as are those state-owned cultural companies, he said.

TAIPEI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's eastern Zhejiang Province and Taiwan have agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, tourism, finance and other sectors, according to sources with a Zhejiang delegation which concluded its eight-day visit to the island on Wednesday.The sources said that the delegation, led by Zhejiang governor Lu Zushan, purchased 31 million yuan (4.5 million U.S. dollars) worth fruits and tea products from local farmers in Kaohsiung and Nantou.Zhejiang provincial government also pledged to help Taiwan farmers to sell their agricultural products in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Yiwu and other cities in the province and offer them preferential treatment in participating farm produce exhibitions.Zhejiang Province plans to increase its imports from Taiwan to about 10 billion U.S. dollars by the end of this year, from last year's 7.7 billion U.S. dollars.After the first six Zhejiang companies which have been permitted to conduct investment in Taiwan, Zhejiang government will promote more companies to invest in the island.Commercial banks in Zhejiang and Taiwan have also achieved cooperation agreement on financial service, insurance, futures trading and other services for small and medium-sized companies on both sides.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities on Sunday said the heat that had been bearing down on many parts of the country would continue for a few more days.Sweltering weather, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius, could be expected in at least 13 provinces and regions across China, the National Meteorological Center said.In Beijing, the local meteorological bureau upgraded the heat alert on Sunday from blue to yellow, two steps below the top alert. CHANGCHUN/HARBIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Workers were racing Thursday to retrieve the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels that were swept by floods into the Songhua River running through northeast China's Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces.Each barrel contains 170 kilograms of flammable chemical liquid, according to a press conference held by the Jilin city government Thursday. Another 4,000 empty barrels also were floating in the river."The barrels are well-sealed," Wang Mingchen, deputy secretary-general of the Jilin city government, said at the press conference.There had been fears that if the chemicals leaked due to barrel damage or explosions, the water in the Songhua River, a major drinking water source of tens of millions of people in the two provinces, would be contaminated.However, Ministry of Environmental Protection spokesman Tao Detian said Thursday that a water test conducted early Thursday morning showed the river water was not contaminated.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The value of the gross output of China's auto industry surged 49 percent year on year to 2.086 trillion yuan (308 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of the year, officials at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Monday.At the same time, total export and import volume jumped 84 percent year on year to 50.66 billion U.S. dollars, according to a MIIT statement posted on its Web site.From January to July, China's auto output and sales both exceeded 10 million units. In July, China's auto output stood at 1.29 million units, up 16 percent year on year, while sales stood at 1.24 million units, up 15 percent year on year, MIIT said.Also, the Chinese government decided in June to extend an auto replacement subsidy program by six months until Dec.31 this year.Begun in June of 2009, the subsidy aims to help get highly polluting vehicles off the road while stimulating automobile consumption.Under the program, consumers who trade-in their used small-and medium-sized trucks and some mid-sized passenger vehicles for a new one are eligible to receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 6,000 yuan.By the end of May, the Chinese government had handed out 1.7 billion yuan in subsidies for 127,000 trade-in vehicles.The subsidy program has boosted domestic automobile spending by 15 billion yuan, according to officials at China's Ministry of Commerce.
