At a time when people across the country are calling to defund the police, or outright abolish them, convincing others to make a career in law enforcement could be a tough sell.For Cameron Mosher, however, the decision to put on the badge for a living is an easy one.“For me, it’s always been an urge to serve my community,” he said.Mosher is training to be a deputy sheriff at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy in Southern California.“I want to try to be that positive change in law enforcement to try to help and move forward with this career,” he said.Moving forward and maintaining order as the country deals with a pandemic and social unrest.“I have a brother in St. Louis, Missouri, not too far from Ferguson, and we’ve had some interesting debates over the last five or so years,” said Lt. Joses Walehwa, who is helping train a new group of recruits at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy.Walehwa says his team is preparing the next generation of law enforcement officer for much more than traffic stops and arrests.“As an African American, or really any minority group here in America, has a unique perspective when it comes to just their lived experience growing up,” he said. “I think for me, the biggest impact is bridging the gap. You know, bridging this issue of us versus them.”Walehwa says another huge impact when it comes to recruiting is the economy.“When the economy starts to dip, you see that people start to look for stable jobs,” he said. “Law enforcement and public sector and jobs like ours become a little bit more appealing because people see the stability of the job.”A job where despite a pension and a mean annual wage of more ,600 (Bureau of Labor Statistics), there’s still a major need for more sheriff’s deputies across the country.A recent report from the Police Executive Research Forum shows 36% of respondents said the number of applicants at their agency has “decreased significantly.”For recruits like Mosher, however, working in law enforcement means much more than money. It’s about building trust in his community while also addressing new challenges and raising the standards of law enforcement officers.“We see definitely a lot of people who are not necessarily supportive of law enforcement right now,” he said. “But in the end, that’s totally OK, because we’re here to support everyone. Automakers are racing to develop driverless cars, putting increasingly complex technology on the road despite concerns from safety experts and the National Transportation Safety Board about a lack of regulations.Unlike rules for the design of a seatbelt or airbag, the federal guidelines for automated vehicle systems are voluntary. The board recently called on DOT to issue new safety rules after its investigation of a May 2016 fatal crash of a Tesla Model S operating on autopilot near Williston, Fla. The Tesla slammed into a tractor-trailer, its cameras and automatic emergency braking system failing to spot the blank side of the truck against the white sky.It was the first known deadly wreck of a car driving with that level of automated sophistication. The NTSB said the driver relied too heavily on the car’s traffic-aware cruise control system and autosteering feature, but also blamed Tesla’s autopilot for allowing the driver to not interact with the car for prolonged periods of time.Investigators found the driver had his hands on the wheel for only 25 seconds during the 37 minutes the car was on autopilot. After the crash, Tesla updated its software that requires drivers touch the wheel every so often when the car is driving itself to ensure a human is paying attention to the road. Now if a driver repeatedly fails to touch the wheel, he or she will “strike out” and cause the car to slow down and stop in its lane with its hazard lights on, disabling autopilot for the remainder of the trip. 2378

  

At least three people have died, including an alleged gunman, after gunfire erupted at a home in Port St. Lucie in southeastern Florida. Officers on scene said a chilling 911 call came in Monday afternoon, a girl said someone was inside her house shooting people.At about 1:15 p.m. ET Monday, the city’s police department advised the public to stay away from the scene on Morningside Blvd. near Morningside Elementary School. Around 3:30 p.m. ET, officers reported a man and 13-year-old girl found at the home had died. Two others found at the scene were taken to a nearby hospital. An officer was injured, and is expected to be OK. A SWAT Team then made entry into the home and found the suspected shooter dead in an upstairs bedroom. Police say it was a dispute about the alleged gunman's dog that started the incident. 830

  

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Authorities say two cranes collided and at least partially collapsed at a construction site in Austin, Texas, injuring at least 22 people. Footage posted by TV station KVUE after Wednesday's accident shows two cranes tangled several stories above a building under construction a few miles north of downtown in a rapidly growing neighborhood that includes residential, retail and office space. TV footage showed one of the crane operators still inside the crane cabin, although it did not appear to be damaged.Austin-Travis County EMS reports that at least 22 people were hurt, including at least seven who were being treated and prepped for transport to a hospital. At least eight ambulances were headed to the scene. 746
