A Cleveland police spokesperson confirmed that two Remington shotguns were stolen from two police cruisers that were parked near the city's Justice Center and set on fire during the riot that broke out during the police violence protest last month.During the May 30 riot, News 5 cameras caught people in the streets vandalizing police cars.One of the cruisers was tagged with the word "pigs" on the trunk. BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said.The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. That’s because of their ability to leap across surfaces, which could further help robots make their way across uneven terrain. 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After tornadoes ripped through parts of Nashville, Tennessee, a strong group of black men is taking steps to rebuild a community. “Nashville strong,” said Demetrius Short, captain of the Nashville chapter of Black Men Run – a brotherhood inspired through health and wellness that has thousands of members and dozens of chapters across the country. “Two days a week we come out and put all our stress and anxiety under our feet,” Short said. This group of African American men is helping their community from ground zero. “We want you to be to be encouraged about your educational success but also as men of color and men in general we want you to know about your health,” Short said. Short and other members of BMR go to local elementary schools to help inspire students. It's part of the group’s Black Men Run, Brown Boys Read program. The most recent lesson was all about helping these children deal with their emotions following the destruction the deadly tornadoes left behind. “Some people just don’t have anything,” said third grader Tyler Hanserd. “They don’t have electricity a roof over their heads they don’t even have a house.” Judging from the support, these sessions seem to be working well. “I love what black me run do with our boys their excited,” said Myra Taylor, the executive principal at Buena Vista Elementary School in north Nashville. Taylor says BMR gives her students strong black men to look up to. “It helps our kids release some of the anxiety,” she said. “A lot of them lost homes, they lost items, they lost clothes, but they come back and we’re all here and that matters to our kids.” That includes kids like Hanserd, whose family lost power for a week following the tornado. “People lost their lives and people don’t have shelter, they don’t have food and they don’t have water,” he said. “So, that’s not cool.” BMR leaders say mentoring youth is directly connected to fostering community awareness. “Our motto here is, ‘We don’t run through our community, we run with it,’” short said. Short added that it’s important to teach children that they don’t have to wait until they’re older to make a difference, but that they can make an impact on their communities today. “We’re teaching them about perseverance, determination, overcoming obstacles so they don’t quit on mile one they don’t quit on mile two or mile three,” he said. “They come across the finish line.”For BMR, there’s no quitting physically, emotionally or spiritually. Members are helping historic black churches by donating supplies and cleaning up the damage. “This is the devastation of the tornado that hit Nashville,” Bishop Marcus Campbell of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist church said while pointing out damage and debris. Campbell added that BMR has helped at a higher level. “It touched my heart to see there’s still humanity that still cares for one another,” he said. “I know that we are better together and we are going to be better than what we was before the all this had taken place.”Because BMR is Nashville strong and Tennessee tough, the group is ready to run down that long road of recovery for as long as it takes. 3172

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – All four police officers involved in the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis are now facing charges. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced Wednesday afternoon that former officer Derek Chauvin’s murder charge has been upgraded from third-degree to second-degree. He’s also being charged with second-degree manslaughter.Ellison also announced that former officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane are being charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder for their role in Floyd's death. Watch Ellison discuss the additional charges below: Ellison took the lead on the case last week and will work alongside Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman as they seek justice for Floyd’s killing. Wednesday, Ellison said additional evidence in the case allowed prosecutors to enhance the murder charge against Chauvin.The attorney general said that getting a conviction against the former officers will be a challenge. He added that Freeman is the only prosecutor in the state who has won a murder conviction case against an officer.Floyd died in police custody on Memorial Day. Bystander video shows one police officer, Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. Additional video shows that officers Keung and Lane also put their body weight on Floyd during the arrest. Officer Thao stood by with his back turned during the arrest.
