BEIJING (AP) — The prospects for a preliminary breakthrough in the U.S.-China trade war improved Thursday after the two sides agreed to reduce some punitive tariffs on each other's goods, though the full extent of the rollback wasn't clear.A Chinese spokesman announced the development Thursday as talks on ending the trade war progressed, and it triggered a rally in U.S. stock markets.A U.S. private sector analyst with knowledge of the talks said there are still deliberations in the White House about how far to roll back the duties and what steps China must take before the reductions would occur. "The signals that are coming out are moving in the right direction for a deal."The two sides are aiming to finalize the agreement by the end of next week, the private sector official said. President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping would still need to agree on where and when they would formally sign the pact.As part of the agreement, the Trump administration would withdraw threatened tariffs that it planned to impose Dec. 15 on about 0 billion in Chinese imports, the source said. And actually, really horrifying for me to see because I know my brother was right in the middle of a room that had flashover and that was his last experience,” said Grogg.This is her outlet to grieve. She's found purpose in educating and warning others. Had her brother’s home had fire sprinklers, she thinks her family would still be here today.“You can replace material things, but you can't replace a life and that's the difference. You really need to consider fire sprinklers to save the lives of your family,” said Grogg.Shane Ray is the president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association. He’s been in the fire service since 1984 and has seen how smoke detectors alone are not enough to prevent deaths.“We have more contents in our home than we've ever had before and most of those contents are made out of synthetic materials, so it produces a much more toxic smoke, much faster and much more deadly,” Ray said.On Thursday, he demonstrated how quickly a fire spreads. Within a minute, flames and smoke engulfed a tiny room. The smoke alarm sounded then the sprinklers went off. In a side-by-side comparison, the same room, without sprinklers, is completely destroyed by the fire.Ray said the sprinklers give families time to evacuate, buy firefighters time to get to the incident, and can save the lives of our pets.“Ninety-six percent of fires are contained with just one sprinkler. This is the sprinkler that came out of that fire. So, if we had another 10 rooms in the house, this is the only sprinkler that would activate. It's not tied to the smoke alarm, it's not tied to anything else, it's individually heat-activated,” said Ray, attempting to dispel some myths surrounding sprinklers.The heat in a room must reach 155 degrees before the bulb in the sprinkler shatters, releasing water. Burnt toast or cigar smoke will not set off fire sprinklers.According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 2,500 people die in home fires each year. BOSTON, Mass. – A statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded in Boston.A WHDH photographer discovered the vandalism at Christopher Columbus Park on Atlantic Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday.WHDH reports that the same statue was vandalized with red paint and the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in 2015. And in 2006, the head was broken off and went missing for six days before it was put back on, WHDH says.The city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, told WBZ-TV that the statue will be put in storage and there will be conversations about the “historic meaning” of the incident and whether it will ever go back up.This Massachusetts statue is one of many that have been vandalized, taken down or destroyed amid the ongoing protests over racial justice following the death of George Floyd.Another statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond, Virginia, was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake on Tuesday night, WTVR reports.In other states, there’s a renewed movement to remove confederate statues and monuments, which some say glorify the Civil War-era South. Based on public comments during the Kansas City Parks and Recreation community input sessions, it's clear that there is broad support for changing the name of an iconic fountain and parkway.It’s also clear that there doesn’t seem to be a consensus as to what the name of the J.C. Nichols Fountain and in Mill Creek Park, which is located just east of the Country Club Plaza, should be changed.Nor is there a timeline for considering any possible changes.Parks Board Commissioner Chris Goode proposed renaming the J.C. Parkway, which runs between the Plaza and the park north from West 47th Street to West 43rd Street, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a June 9 commission meeting.He also proposed renaming the fountain to Dream Fountain, a nod to King’s famed “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.Several major Kansas City-area civic groups issued a statement in support of Goode’s proposed changes, but the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City said it doesn’t believe the parkway is an appropriate place to honor King.The KC Parks and Rec Board of Commissioners do not plan to introduce a formal resolution regarding a possible name change at its next meeting, which is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30.Currently, there is no timeline for when, or if, the board will address the possibility of renaming the fountain and parkway.The effort to rename the fountain is not new.
